Description
I'm a former real estate broker, and copywriter specializing in real estate and related fields. In addition, I offer marketing help to agents via my weekly ezine, e-books, and courses.

About me:

After working in real estate for 19 years, I understand the challenges and the limitations. I also understand what it takes to build a successful real estate business, because I did it.

By the time I had worked for other brokers for 9 years I was frustrated with "business as usual." I'd read the books and articles and wanted to try new marketing techniques - but worked with people who weren't interested. So I got a broker's license and opened a new agency in a small town that already had 5 agencies. All the other brokers and agents expected my business to fail.

Instead, many of them did. By using innovative marketing techniques and providing the service that customers deserve, we captured just over 50% of the market before the end of our second year.  By the time I sold the business, we were one of only 2 agencies left in town.

I left the business when I realized that writing the promotions had become the most enjoyable part of my work. Instead of going out to view homes, I wanted to work on the newsletter. Instead of going out with a buyer I wanted to write more ads for my listings.  Instead of taking new listings I wanted to write prospecting letters.

So, I decided to put my writing skills to use for the agents who DO want to get out there in the field and do the job - and who don't want to or can't write good copy.

I also decided to give the buying public the benefit of my education over those 19 years, and have written two e-books for consumers. The Land Buyer's Guidebook shows prospective buyers what they need to know before they buy and gives them a handy checklist of questions to ask. Home Building Simplified was written with collaboration from my home-builder husband, and lets people in on the steps to building a home, along with ways to navigate the rough seas that sometimes face consumers during the home building process.

I do write for a wide variety other businesses, and do volunteer work writing fund raising letters for animal rescue groups.  Writing, the psychology of marketing, and how subtle changes in words can affect outcome are all fascinating to me. So with the exception of 3 areas I firmly avoid, I'll promote almost any business, person, or project you can imagine.

Your success is my goal:

My involvement in writing for real estate goes beyond writing a web page or a press release for an agent - I'm also interested in seeing every ambitious agent succeed in the business.

I remember the real estate classes I took, and I recall the frustration that new agents expressed while trying to get started with no real instruction. Toward that end, I wrote an e-book titled Getting Clients. But I soon decided that the book wasn't enough. New agents need some coaching and many aren't getting it from their brokers.

I understand that. When I was a broker it was very difficult to find time to sit down and guide new agents on a daily, or even a weekly basis.  So now, in addition to the book, I offer a 6-month course on marketing yourself as a Realtor. The Real Estate Career Builder Program comes with specific assignments to push agents step-by-step down the path to success. In addition, I have a free Mini-Marketing class - 7 days of short lessons with assignments to get new agents on the right track.

It bothers me to see people begin a real estate career with high hopes and then drop out after a year because they haven't sold a thing. My hope is that my books and courses will prevent that from happening to agents who care enough to make an effort.

A successful real estate career is a blend of many kinds of marketing - some done in person, and much done through the written word. It requires the courage to "leave the herd" and market your individuality while creating a niche in which you can become THE expert. After that, it requires skill in marketing your listings so that they too stand out from the crowd.

Now that NAR reports that over 80% of all buyers begin their search on the internet, a web site is vital to agent success. Unfortunately, many agents with websites have "clone" sites that do nothing to promote them as individuals. And, judging from the mail I get, most prospecting letters are also clones - and are completely ineffective.

One of my goals is to help as many Realtors as possible break out of that mold and represent themselves with sites and letters that give prospects an urgent reason to call. That's why I spend extensive time talking with my clients before I write a word. I want to know what special skills, expertise, and services they bring to the marketplace so I can show that to their prospects.

NAR doesn't report it, but sellers are searching the web for agents too. They want to find agents who make their listings stand out from the crowd and get noticed!

Your website and your prospecting letters must sell your service - and your listing promotions must sell the listings. Gone are the days when a cryptic "3BR, 2BA, garage" will make the phone ring. Now, with an abundance of listings in most parts of the country,  it's time to make the prospect feel that he simply must see your listing before someone steals it out from under him.
