Advice for New Agents - To Thine Own Self Be True

Advice for New Agents Getting into Real Estate  - An Active Rain Challenge.

There are a few things I would do differently starting a career in Real Estate today. For example, I would do a lot more self-reflection before jumping into a brokerage. The lure of a big office name was pretty compelling to me fourteen years ago. It's easy to assume bigger is better.

The competitive and performance driven environment didn't translate well with my independent personality and style.  I started doubting my abilities and felt discouraged when comparing myself to the top-producers. Unfortunately, there wasn't the option of a mentor-ship at that time in this particular company. It was pretty cut-throat.

The other big mistake I made was not finding a niche. Little did I know how exhausting it can be to be to work it all. Obviously, since we really can't be all things to all people, it was difficult to "own" a share of the market. So once again, some self-reflection would have been valuable.   True confidence comes when you know you're the absolute best choice for a client.

Therefore, I would say my inability to thrive in the culture of a large brokerage, and a lack of confidence, cost me business in the early years of real estate. I got my license in 2004, and within several years, in spite of my mistakes, was making enough money to be called successful. However, by 2011, I wasn't happy being associated with Real Estate. I felt like a stranger in a strange land.

What Preventing Me from Bailing

I have to give credit to Active Rain for keeping me in the business. It was quite by accident when I found the site, through a blog written by another member. Imagine how delighted I was to find a home with real estate people I could respect and admire. Honestly, joining Active Rain in April of 2011 was the best decision I've made to date.

Three lessons that helped me become a better Realtor.

1. To thine own self be true - a smaller company is a better fit for me.

2. Don't compare yourself to others - stay true to your own goals, not another      person's version of success.

3. Find a niche that allows your passions, values, and expertise to shine. It's        impossible to be all things to all people. Choose where you want to focus and      be the best.

Adding a Lesson number 4. Of course, become a member of Active Rain.

Today, I'm happily working with my husband at a small boutique brokerage. Our niche(s) allow us to spend our time working at something we love, with clients we enjoy. And because it's our passion, we know our specific markets inside and out. No one can duplicate our value. It gives us confidence knowing we are unequivocally the best choice for our clients.

This is such wonderful advice for new or seasoned agents.   I'm a great believer in finding a niche that allows us to utilize our passions and expertise.

I knew what the deal was from the get, coming from 'show business'.
It is a common 'psych-out' to brag about what you're doing, what roles you've snagged and how wonderful you are, to disarm those with whom you are competing for a role or gig.
It's similar in our business, though more self-inflicted. We see what [we think] others are doing, and become insecure about what WE are or are not doing.
The saying "Don't compare your backstage to someone else's highlight reel" comes in very handy to recall!

Debb and Bernie,

Beautifully said, especially in this paragraph,

And because it's our passion, we know our specific markets inside and out. No one can duplicate our value. It gives us confidence knowing we are unequivocally the best choice for our clients.

Hi Debb and Bernie

I think your statement “to thine own self be true” may be the most powerful. I think comparing yourself to other can get you in trouble.

Candice, I expected the competitive and cutthroat environment in radio, as I know you too experienced. My partner and I always got great numbers, but I did always know it was a "what have you done for me lately," world. Perhaps that's why it was bizarre to witness the egos of some agents - I thought they sold houses to help people.  Not stroke some glamorized image of themselves.

I've worked with, interviewed, opened for, and got to know some pretty big names - true celebrities. Perhaps that why it really was so annoying to put up with such blowhards in real estate.

Great post and I'm not surprised it was featured!  Your sincerity shines, which in no doubt has contributed to your success.  I also don't do well in a competitive environment and believe the most successful people (in any industry) are passionate about what they do and have integrity and a true passion in all of their dealings.   This is great advice to seasoned agents as well.

Thank you Will Hamm.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel And we never forget our LOL consultants who helped us discover our wonderful niche of ViewHomes...what a gift to be so proud of our brand. Incidentally, we are being featured in our newspaper on February 4th in a Realtor Spotlight article. Can't wait to see it, we'll be sure to share. Not sure what they'll use from the interview.

This rings true for me too. I am an independant broker and comparing my sales with others was non-productive. Active Rain has been a wonderful place to “talk” with other agents.

What a great post!!

I think your spot on when you say: Be True to Yourself. That is a critical point that few understand.

We each have different personalities and abilities and when we try to be like someone else, it just doesn't work. Because it's not who we are.

I also agree that it is good practice to find a niche: know it, live it, own it.
