I believe that real estate consumers do not have enough choices. To solve that problem locally, I started eauclairebyowner.com to fill in the gaps between FSBO and traditional real estate companies.

I believe that real estate sellers in the Chippewa Valley do not have enough choices. Before eauclairebyowner.com, it seemed that if you were selling your home, you either bought a FSBO sign at a hardware store and tried your luck or paid a full service broker 6% commission. Eau Claire By Owner's mission is to offer consumers a range of choices between those two options.


Since most people find their next home via the internet and/or or yard signs, those are the 2 tools I use extensively to market properties. There is an extensive network of professionals, from attorneys to title companies to banks and mortgage brokers, who are eager to help FSBO sellers close their deals and save money.

But it doesn't hurt to have hundreds of local real estate agents working with you to sell your home either. The MLS, or Multiple Listing Service, is still the 900-lb. gorilla of real estate.  The competitive advantage of my business model is that it gives you the awesome exposure of the MLS yet allows you to sell "by owner" and thus owe no commissions. My business model revolves around your best interests:

  • Getting the most for your property via mass exposure

  • Saving you money on commissions

  • Allowing you to have a say in the commission rate you will pay if an agent sells your home

  • Allowing you to have a great deal of control over the selling process

  • Giving you the tools you need to sell By Owner

The Eau Claire By Owner flat-fee business model is unlike any other in the area, and the response has been fantastic. In just the first 6 months of providing MLS listing services, Eau Claire By Owner listed over 30 homes. 12 had either sold or had accepted offers at that time, and many more still had time remaining before the listing was due to expire. Mike was very professional and easy to work with. Anytime I would email a question, he would get back to me with 24 hours. Very friendly!!!

The only thing I would've liked to have seen (probably not necessarily a service) is like a breakdown of what needs to happen when...like an info sheet so we knew what to expect. Basically everything that will happen before closing. We had no idea, we just kept asking questions.

We initially went with a [full-service] realtor but weren't getting the exposure we wanted (especially on the internet). We tried selling it on our own for a couple months but had to take the time to do our own marketing using various newspapers and postings at local businesses, but we still weren't getting the internet exposure that we wanted. We received the ECBO postcard in the mail and contacted him within a few weeks. We were able to direct people to the site on our "take one" info sheet and they were able to see the photos and more info as well as directions to our location. We saved about $8000 on commission and still received the exposure on the MLS. This was great advertising for the price. We sold our house within a year and our page received over 900 hits total. I would highly recommend ECBO to anyone.

I would definitely recommend eauclairebyowner.com to a friend. Eauclairebyowner allowed us to get the exposure we needed, but made the selling process so much simpler by eliminating the use of so many REALTORS. (The REALTOR that sold the house couldn't believe how fast the whole process went).

Your services were very good and I can't really think of anything that needs improving. You had timely feedback and everything went very smooth.
