I made a living in the real estate/mortgage business between 1985 and 2008. When I started originating FHA loans, the required down payment was 5% minus $500 and automated underwriting wasn't a gleam in anyone's eye. This down payment requirement barely slowed us down, however our average home price was about $70,000. I haven't pulled out the calculator to see what that is in today's money.

My wife had some health problems when
our son was born and was out of work for
6 months. This really caused our credit to

We sold our home, but did not come
