I choose John based primarily on a recommendation from JD Grewell (Grewell is a nationally-known inspector in the DC area). It was also important to me that the inspector be ASHI certified (not all of them are) because it guarantees a minimum level of competence. Turns out John was actually the head of various ASHI committees and has served as the local chapter president. He was obviously more advanced than your average inspector. The actual inspection was fantastic. John did the inspection himself. He was on time, completely professional, and incredibly thorough. He of course looked at everything, including quite a bit of time under the house. He found some substantial problems as well as a number of minor issues. In total, he probably identified about 20 issues. At the end of the inspection he showed us pictures and walked us over to several issues, explaining the defects and how they could be remedied. He answered all of our questions. Later he emailed us a long 30-page report which we of course sent to the home seller. You can tell from the kind of details (obscure code violations) and insight in the report that he obviously has an insane command of this subject area.
