Jamaica is the county seat of Queens County, and as such is the location of courthouses and other administrative buildings for the County of Queens, but it is not the location of Queens Borough Hall, which is located in the neighborhood of Kew Gardens. Jamaica Center, the area around Jamaica Avenue and 165th Street, is home to shopping, movie theatres, restaurants, and the Central Library of the Queens Borough Public Library is located nearby.
Transportation
The Jamaica station is a central transfer point on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which is headquartered in a building adjoining the station; all but one of the commuter railroad's lines run through Jamaica. The New York City Subway's E, J, and Z trains terminate at Jamaica Center-Parsons Boulevard, and F trains terminate at Jamaica-179th Street. Many of the bus routes in Queens terminate or pass through the Jamaica Center transit hub. Jamaica also contains John F. Kennedy International Airport, one of the busiest international airports in the United States and the world. AirTrain JFK runs between terminals at JFK, connects to central Jamaica at the LIRR station, and Howard Beach, New York at the Howard Beach-JFK Airport (A) station.

Shopping In Jamaica Queens
The shopping area in Jamaica is centered on the intersection of 164 Street and Jamaica Avenue, just a short walk from the LIRR and Airtrain (to JFK) station as well as the E, J, and Z subways. Cookies Department Store at 166-21 Jamaica Avenue is one of the biggest discount shops in the downtown. Bargain hunters come as far as Maryland and Detroit to shop for the latest fashions, especially hip hop clothing lines, at some of the best prices in the Northeast. Shoppers seek the latest in clothes, jewelry, footwear, and more from the 300 independent shops in the area.
Established in 1891 in a rented four-bedroom home in Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center’s growth has been remarkable. Today Jamaica Hospital is a 387-bed, fully accredited community teaching hospital with a large network of community-based ambulatory care centers. Through commitment to their mission and collaboration with community residents, businesses and other groups they have strengthened and expanded the hospital’s services.

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers a full array of acute inpatient, rehabilitation and mental health services, the largest voluntary hospital ambulance fleet serving the City’s 911 system, and a Level I trauma center. The hospital provides general medical, pediatric, and psychiatric emergency services, ambulatory care on and off campus, ambulatory surgery, a broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services, and home health services. The affiliated 204-bed Jamaica Hospital Nursing Home (Trump Pavilion) provides long-term care on campus. JHMC serves a population greater than 1.2 million, in Queens and eastern Brooklyn.
- Jamaica Hospital was the 2004 recipient of American Hospital Association "Living the Vision" award, given to hospitals that show a commitment to community health. HCIA and the Health Network selected Jamaica Hospital as one of the countries Top 100 Hospitals, based on objective, quantitative performance data in the areas of quality of care, efficiency of operations and sustainability of overall performance.
- The Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department a level 1 Trauma Center – is one of the busiest in New York. The department also has a Fast Track Center and Queens' first Chest Pain Center. In January 2001, Jamaica Hospital opened a new Pediatric Emergency Department, four times larger than the old one.

King Manor Museum - Today the centerpiece of an 11-acre New York City park in Jamaica, Queens, King Manor Museum was the home and farm of Founding Father Rufus King from 1805 to 1827. Rufus King was an author of the U.S. Constitution, as well as one of New York's first United States Senators, Ambassador to Great Britain and an early, and outspoken, opponent of slavery. King Manor later became the estate of King's son, John Alsop King, who served as New York's Governor. King Manor has been a museum since 1900. King Manor is owned by the City of New York, operated by the King Manor Association of L.I., Inc., and is a member of the Historic House Trust of N.Y.C.
