As a professional in the field of Financial Services, I meet many people who have great incomes and all of the trappings materially, however, their financial houses are not in order. This is especially true of women. As a woman in this field, I feel that it is extremely important to share information with women on the necessity of planning for their futures by taking care of some important things that will mean a lot to them down the road. As women, this is an important issue, and as African-American women, this is a matter of great urgency.
Only recently, in the last 20 years or so, has the opportunity to invest in the economy even been something that was even offered to people of color, and then, not to women of color. This arena has been, heretofore, strictly a field dominated by men. The concept of protecting one's estate with insurance, and protecting their future retirement with investments has only recently become a subject of interest and concern for women. And yet, women are a vital part of the work force, many heading and responsible for large companies, responsible for their employees, and creating much of the wealth for these companies. At some point in their lives, women become responsible for their money, making the final decisions on most money matters. Yet, in many instances, their financial houses are not prepared for what may come their way. This is true of women - no matter what color, though those of other nationalities have at least been exposed to several options because of inheritance, as well as other options offered, taken or not. However, that woman of color, for many , many years, was never educated to the options, nor were they allowed to exercise any of these.
