Pawleys Island, SC History
Pawleys Island, South Carolina is known as one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, located 70 miles north of Charleston and 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach.
In the early 1700's, the families of rice planters who owned plantations on nearby rivers knew that it was unhealthy for their families to be on the rivers during the summer and the living on the seashore at the beach was much healthier. They moved their families to Pawleys each year in May usually until November when they saw the first frost. Pawleys Island, known as "Arrogantly Shabby" still remains a leisurely existence. Pawleys is still known for its laid back atmosphere, hammocks, carefree and barefoot lifestyle. The white sand, wide, pristine beaches encompassed by sand dunes are truly breath taking. The Atlantic Ocean on one side and adjacent creeks behind, you will find families crabbing and fishing on a regular basis.
Strolling on the beach, drifting away for a quiet nap in a hammock and enjoying the serenity that beach living brings are just a few reasons to consider the Pawleys Island area.
