Getting Started with a Website

"If You Build It, They Will Come!"  ... nope, nada.
It takes a bit more work then just building it. We have compiled some "Getting Started" and
Website Optimization Tips for you from our over 13 years in the website design business.

Your very first step is to purchase your own Domain Name. Places such as Godaddy charge under $9 a year for one. A small price to pay for independence!

A good Domain Name allows you to sneak in some keywords for the search engines such as LeadWebDesigners.com. Remember, there are no spaces in domain names. You can have a Dash-between each word but we recommend no more then 3 words and try to keep those words easy to spell. A Domain Name should start with a Letter but after that you can use numbers such as 2u or 4u.

If purchasing a Domain Name is Not an option for you because your company already provides you with a website but you still want your name or keywords for the search engines, then you can use a service like BZ10.com to mask your domain name/Affiliate link ID and still have the option to include some keywords.

Your next step is to get Website Hosting. This is where the files that the public sees as a website, are stored.

There are many choices for this service such as LeadWebHosting.com but you'll need to understand some terms when Website Host shopping. Storage Megs and Bandwidth.

Storage Megs is how much space your website hosting company allows you to use for your website. For this you'll want to think about how many Pages your site will have. a Safe margin is to assume 1/2 meg per page unless you'll have a Lot of pictures, then move your base assumption to 1 meg per page. A well designed 10 page Website will usually take less then 5 megs in the end, leaving the rest of the storage for things such as old email that also takes from your hosting space if you are not forwarding them out to another email address. You'll see a lot of Website Hosting companies offering 1000s of megs of storage but for the most part this is just hype to get you to spend more then you will Ever need.

Bandwidth is another fun one! This is basically how many visitors your website can handle in a month before you Website Hosting company starts charging you more. When a visitor comes to your website all the buttons and logo and other graphics that are the same on every page are sent to the visitors computer as Cache. This means each New page of your site they visit after the first page won't cost you as much bandwidth since they are just getting new content such as text and new pics for that page. An average 5 to 10 page website can get upto 15,000 visitors a month on just 200megs of bandwidth. As with the storage megs, in this you will also see Website Hosting companies offering you HUGE numbers for bandwidth that you'll likely never need. Math-Twister time! 1000 kilobytes = 1 meg, 1000 megs = 1 gig

Yes, I know you Want Millions of visitors! But Millions of Not interested visitors only costs you money, 10,000 Interested visitors are gold. Our Website Optimization Tips below will show you how to get those interested visitors.

At Some point in the first 2 steps above you have decided whether you are getting a template website or hiring a Website Designer. With a template website you'll need to brush up on your HTML and FTP skills. With a Website Designer, they will often already have a Website Host they work with and can get you going. But it is always Your choice and with this information above you can make that an educated choice.

Now that we've got it built, lets Market!

Lets start by checking how good your Website Designer is!
On your website Right Click your mouse Anywhere EXCEPT on a picture, with me so far? ok, Click View Source in the drop-down box that pops up. This will pull up a notepad with a lot of HTML that looks like a mess to you BUT all we care about is the top section... look for the words "Description" and "Keywords" and "Title".  These are called Meta Tags and what some engines use to rank your site but also ALL engines use to create your website description in the search engine results people will see. We'll cover each of what these are next. (no meta tags? slap your Website Designer around a little. Meta Tags should be on every page of your site)

Note* This notepad alone cannot change your website. Changes done to it must be uploaded to your hosting. It is safe to close and not save the notepad when we are done using it as an example.

Title tag: This is "Welcome to LeadWebDesigners.com - Web Design, Hosting and Search Engine Submit"
Whatever you put in that line will be what's seen as the Link to your site in the search engines and at the top of the window of your website. Try for 7 to 10 words. Using Keywords people would use if they were looking for you. If we were targeting Just our state it could read "LeadWebDesigners.com - Washington State Website Design, Hosting and Submissions"  The search engines would rank this better in searches done for Website Designers in Washington State. Realtors in California, Plumbers in Texas......... you get the idea.

Description tag: This is where you get to talk about your website and what you offer using Keywords and phrases people would use if they were searching for you. Write this as a short Paragraph with as few ands, ifs or buts and as Many Keywords as you can mash in and still have it readable without looking stupid (technical term). Some search engines only read the first 10 or so words while others will read the whole thing and highlight the keywords as a paragraph in the search engine results under your Link. So cover all the bases!

Keywords tag: Now, This one is just seen by some search engines. Here we don't need to be delicate. Write out all your keywords and keyword phrases people will use to find you.... "website design, website hosting, search engine submission, guaranteed traffic, website optimization tips" Couple of things I want you to see here. No caps, most engines don't see those anymore or don't care. NO Repeats, don't try "website design, Website Design" Many engines now see that as your attempt to SPAM Them. Notice also, there is a space after each keyword, comma. That does make a difference and you'll just have to trust me on that.

Thats good enough for now on Meta Tags. Now make all of your website's text Use those keywords as often as possible, hopefully on seperate pages that are targeting each keyword or phrase if possible. Most engines rank your site based on whats called Keyword Weight....How many times they saw your keywords used in your normal text. But Please keep it readable for the rest of us!

Now that we have all that covered you are safe to begin a search engine submission campaign and can expect good results from your efforts! This is how even the ugliest websites get to #1! There are more tips you can do to Optimize your website on our site and many more "website optimization" theories can be found by using a ......search engine!
