Kansas City started as a trading post back in the mid 1800's. There were two trading posts; one in Independence and one in Westport. Kelly's in Westport is the oldest buisiness in Kansas City surviving from that time.
The Country Club Plaza in Kansas City was developed by JC Nichols in the 1920's. The Spanish architecture was inspired by his trip to Seville Spain. People thought JC was crazy for planning to build in what was then swampland! The Plaza became the first shopping area in the United States to cater to the automobile. Funny because today the Plaza is known as a wonderful place to stroll on foot.
