I am an independent real estate broker based in Cotati California, the "hub of Sonoma County". I started my real estate career with Coldwell Banker, I felt they were the brokerage in my area that provided the best training in risk management. After two years with CB, I sat for my broker's exam and started by own business, Safe Haven Realty.
Life hasn't always been about real estate. I started out in life as a professional musician (bass guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals) with an all girl rock and roll band in Eugene, Oregon called Sapphire.
After being a broke musician for 7 years, I decided to get a real gig. I landed a job as a computer operator at Oregon State University, which started a 23 year career in Information Technology. But in 2003 when my employer asked me to transfer to a place I had no desire to move to, I simply said "no thank you".
So now it was time to choose my next career. My father was a real estate broker in Redmond, Oregon and called himself "The Dirt Merchant". His wife, who was also a broker, was the real estate commissioner for the State of Oregon for 12 years. Getting my real estate license and walking in their footsteps seemed the next natural thing to do ... and I'm loving it.
As a member of the baby boomer population, I have always wondered where all of us are going to live once we can no longer live on our own. The thought has fascinated me since the day my grandmother broke her hip, and my mother announced that we were going to go shopping for a new home for her. This didn't take long, mind you, as there were only 3 assisted living homes in Corvallis Oregon in 1989. Two we ruled out immediately as one smelled horrible, and the other was a bit too hoity toity for grandma.
Fast forward to 2013. Sure, there are many more assisted living facilities these days, but not nearly enough to house the baby boomers. And there will never be enough. That is why I became interested in learning about Aging in Place. I have taken courses to learn about barrier free environments, universal design and home customization that involves everything from widening doors and hallways to installing lifts and elevators.
