Monica's Legal and International Credentials

Born and raised in London, England, Monica grew up in a family that included Irish parents and three siblings, including her identical twin. A graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science with a Bachelor of Laws degree, she was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales as a "barrister." Believing that the grass was greener on this side of the Atlantic, Monica moved to New York City, earned a Masters of Laws degree from Columbia Law School, became a member of the New York Bar and practiced commercial litigation with the well-known firm of Lord, Day & Lord. She later became a litigation partner in the New York city office of two international law firms; Lord Day & Lord, Barrett Smith and subsequently, Morgan Lewis & Bockius.

Monica's Interests and Philanthropic Activities

After marrying a Long Island native in 1995, Monica and her husband Jim decided to leave the "rat race" in the big city and move south for a new lifestyle. When they relocated to Wilmington, NC, they knew they had found the best place to call home and raise a family. They have two young children and enjoy many activities as a family, including the beach, kayaking, boating, traveling, art and music.  Monica is an accomplished Irish dancer and occasionally will perform an Irish jig or reel!

Monica believes in giving to those less fortunate, especially children.  With each closing, she makes donations to several charities supporting children here and abroad. In recent years, Monica and her husband have made several humanitarian trips to El Salvador on behalf of The Least Among Us, a charity whose mission is to raise funds for the construction of schools and to provide scholarships to under-privileged children in El Salvador. In 2008 she and her husband endowed a new school and campus named Our Lady of the Poor, in the village of Zacatecoluca. The school now provides a grade-school education for over 100 impoverished children and additional classrooms are in the works.

Monica also has a deep interest in the Arts and the rich cultural activities that Wilmington NC has to offer. She and her husband have been the lead sponsors of several local theatre productions performed in Wilmington's historic Thalian Hall and The Red Barn Studio Theatre.
