What does Rick Obst do for a living?

I work in the mortgage division of a regional bank and provide marketing support for the Regional Manager, 4 Sales Managers, and 35+ Loan Originators from Salem, Oregon south to Humboldt County, California along the Interstate 5 and Coast Highway corridors. There is no "typical" day with this job.

Who is Rick Obst?

I am a Phoenix, AZ native who left the hot, dry desert air for the cool, lush green of the Pacific Northwest in Eugene, OR. My wife Suzanne and I chose Eugene because it is a smaller university town and close to the Oregon Coast and the Cascade Mountains. We didn't know a soul in Oregon when we moved here and we wouldn't dream of living anywhere else. Eugene's friendly people, vibrant sense of community, and unique character cause us to frequently exclaim "only in Eugene."

Education is lifelong. My formal education includes a B.S. in Management from Arizona State University and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. My work education has included experience with a regional commercial real estate developer, commercial property management, commercial leasing, hearing property tax appeals, commercial appraisal and feasibility studies, business plan writing, Small Business Development Center real estate consultant, community college instructor, CFO for a regional long-term care company, and a residential client care coordinator. My entrepreneurial bent has led to helping found and operate a commercial property management company, audio tour tape company, a medically supervised bariatric center, and a small business consultancy.

My wife and soulmate Suzanne owns a gift basket business called Northwest Touches, providing custom baskets for real estate professionals to give their clients at closings. Not only is she an excellent cook, but she is a special human being that I'm very lucky to have met and married. I knew instinctively on our first date that she was the one and I'm glad that I waited to find her.

Suzanne and I host international students improving their English skills at the University of Oregon's American English Institute. We are also active with the Friendship Foundation for International Students (FFIS) at the U of O and through these programs have befriended wonderful young adults from Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Togo. Many still call us "Mom" and "Dad" and we consider them and their friends we've met our adopted sons and daughters. Our leisure hours are often spent exploring Oregon, camping, gardening, photography, and enjoying the company of family, friends, and neighbors.

Publications & Projects

  1. Oregon State Parks Web Photography Project - I am working with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department as a volunteer to help photograph the 55 reservable Oregon State Parks and their campsites. The objective is for online customers to be able to view photos of the park and campsites when reserving sites on the Active Network Outdoor Recreation Management System (ORMS).

Campers will be able to see a picture of the site they wish to reserve, rather than an icon on a map. Campers will also be able to see photos highlighting some of the park's most attractive features. There are over 6,000 campsites in the Oregon State Park system
