Grew up in the Santa Clara Valley and earned money delivering newspapers for the San Jose Mercury News and picking fruit in the orchards and "cutting cots" while attending junior high and high school. Enlisted in the Navy at age 17. While enlisted I completed my High School GED and completed my tour of duty. Upon my honorable discharge, I worked part-time while completing my degree at Foothill College. Moved to Santa Rosa, California in 1969.
