Have a wonderful Easter 2020 Well it's Easter once again and I wanted to express what a wonderful day it is. Even with everything that is going on around the world and I will refrain from the name ...Let's rejoice with our families and friends via cell phones, social media and more. There are many families that will not be able to attend church for Easter 2020 but always remember, where there is a gathering of 2 or more Christian's it is considered a church.I have never celebrated a Easter quite like this, it seems to be more personal this year. Let's try our best to lift up the dome of gloom that has surrounded our lives. If the weather is fit for a walk, get on out there and enjoy Easter 2020 and express love everywhere you go. "And please pray for everyone around the world, for their ...

I left my heart in Alaska ... Yes there is a famous song about leaving your heart in San Francisco, but those days are long gone for me. There was a time back in the mid 70's when I first had the chance to visit San Francisco where I did leave my heart. Since then traveling to Alaska since 2014 I do believe my heart and home are now in Alaska.I try and visit Alaska at least 3 times per year now and it's just a matter of time before I start spending 3-4-5 months in Alaska per year there. I just can't get enough of Alaska's beauty, silence and freshness, and Alaska seems to always be on my mind when I am down in the Lower 48. For anyone that has had the chance to visit Alaska you know exactly what I'm talking about, you can never get enough of Alaska. And that is why I recently left my he...

First off, I just want to say that I feel so incredibly fortunate to be at a point in my life that I can live comfortably, pay my bills, and have some extra money to invest.  The position I have taken on at Rentec Direct propery management software and tenant screening company has allowed me more freedom to spend time with my family and do the things I need and want to do.  I'm so gracious and so happy to be exactly where I am today! I'm bringing up the topic of investments because well, it's relevant as I've spent a portion of my afternoon today trying to determine what kind of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds I should invest in for retirement and to be blunt teasing out the details of different investment firms and options is not really something I enjoy.  I do however enjoy investing ...

It was one year ago that I began my journey as the Social Media Director for Rentec Direct and I have learned so much in that year. I have enjoyed my position with Rentec tremendously, My co-workers are wonderful people, the work is rewarding and the hours are flexible which all equate to, well, one happy me. My career change was not exactly an intuitive switch, I went from a 10 year career as a Botanist with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to this position as an internet based social media guru of sorts. The transition to a new position was a welcome change. After ten years of working for a government organization my frustration levels were getting pretty high and my satisfaction with that job was dwindling. There will always be things that I loved about my job with the BLM, like w...

This is the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska, and it's receding. The lake and the visitor's center were once under the ice. I believe it is a half mile wide. A Kingfisher rests on top of a harbor pole. There wasn't much to do in Juneau except visit shops in the historic district, and we walked up a heart-attack flight of stairs to see the State Capitol, which we never found because I guess it looks like a junior high school, so we missed it. This is the harbor in Juneau and, apparently, is indicative of what Juneau looks like most of the year, which is wet, rainy and a bit chilly. Thank goodness we were whisked away to dinner via a day boat to the Orca Point Lodge for dinner, which is a private lodge nestled in the middle of nowhere, like everywhere in the Inside Passage.   We were...

The thing about posting photos while on a cruise ship is the fact they don't give you anytime whatsoever to upload photographs. I have about 15 minutes in the morning or when we depart to post. Which means I have to type very fast, give little thought to what I have to say and just get it on the page before I lose the Internet connection. Because when you're on vacation, you're not supposed to be loading photos from your camera to your computer. Some people would say you're not even supposed to shoot photographs when you should be spending all of your time just staring at the wonderous beauty around you, and it is astounding scenery, but give me a break. Slave drivers, these lords of fun are aboard this ship. Take a train ride now. Go for a tram journey through the fog and mist...

Great Customer Service Makes All The Difference! Work took me to Juneau, Alaska June 20/21, 2013. I have several great memories of my trip but one especially lingers. It keeps resurfacing and brings me many smiles of appreciation. On Friday around 4:30 we were finally done with our marathon day of clock hour classes. We cleaned up the space, packed up, jumped in the car, dropped a bunch of stuff off at our local First American Title office and headed for the wharf in downtown Juneau. Tired and starving we were hoping for a chat over some food and a beverage before catching a flight home. When we arrived at the Twisted Fish Company Alaskan Grill the place was packed and really busy with 2 cruise ships in port. When we got our table our server Kate showed up. Kate went so totally above an...

As I was daydreaming on my flight back from Juneau to Seattle this past Friday evening, I couldn’t help but think how fortunate we are for our then Secretary of State, William Henry Seward (1801 - 1872). Seward racked up many accomplishments. He graduated from Union College in 1820 with high honors and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1821. He served as New York’s 12th Governor then became US Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and later President Andrew Johnson. On the night of Lincoln’s assassination Seward survived an attempt on his own life. The Russian Crown was strapped for cash at the time and huge loans were due. They wanted to offset the Brits, their territorial competitors, so they planned to sell this useless wilderness to the United States. William Seward final...

What is the Only State Capitol in the US with NO ROAD ACCESS? Juneau Alaska! Larry and I just spent the weekend in Juneau, Alaska. This is our state capitol and, in all our years here (I was born in Alaska and Larry has been in Alaska since the early 90s) neither of us have never been. It is not as easy to get to as the rest of the states because you have to either fly in or boat in-there is NO, nada, zilch, zero roads to get there. This is the only state capitol in the USA with NO ROAD ACCESS!   If you 'Google it' the directions even say "Take the Juneau-Haines ferry to Juneau." Yes, that is a real ferry boat! We think it is a little 'sideways' too! Thankfully, we decided to drive from Wasilla 50 miles to Anchorage, then fly an additional 80 minutes to Juneau. No driving through Alaska...

Juneau is a small town, and pretty much everybody knows everybody else.  It's hard not to trip over each other, and over our clients. But the fact is, buyers and sellers come and go, we all need to continue to work together, and we don't have room to cut-throat eachother. I just had a nice visit from another licensee in our town.  She brought me a HUGE bag of Boy Scout Chocolatey Triple Delight as a "thank you"! I listed a house and someone emailed me about it right after it hit my website.  My seller had told me an agent we both knew mentioned in passing she might just know the right person for her beautiful home.Since just about everyone appears to be on Facebook, I've developed a habit of looking to see if people are there.  There's a safety element to that, but mostly it's to help m...

Ah, it's dinner time and my mouth is watering for some spicy food. When the mood for spicy food strikes, the Bobby Flay cook books and recipes surface. We even have his 'Boy Meets Grill' cookbook on the shelf. Bobby Flay, undisputed Southwestern Chef extraordinaire owns the search term 'Mesa Grill' on Google. Every link on the first page goes to Mesa Grill New York, Mesa Grill Las Vegas or Mesa Grill Bahamas. You'll easily find links to Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill reviews, menus, online reservations, walking directions, hours, maps, wine lists, recipes, cookbooks, sauces, rubs, and even gift cards. Heck, I can even sign up for his mailing list or click over to the Kohl's link to see videos for his product demos and grilling tips. On to search results page two and it's simply more of the sam...

Real Estate Tuesday Trivia: What land did the U.S. Government buy for $7.2 million?     Answer: The U.S. bought all of Russian America (Alaska) from the Russian Czar in March 1867.     History The Alaska Purchase was the acquisition of the Alaska territory by the United States from Russia in 1867 by a treaty ratified by the Senate. The purchase, made at the initiative of United States Secretary of State William H. Seward, gained 586,412 square miles (1,518,800 km2) of new United States territory. Originally organized as the Department of Alaska, the area was successively the District of Alaska and the Alaska Territory before becoming the modern state of Alaska upon being admitted to the Union as a state in 1959. An Aleut name, "Alaska," was chosen by the Americans. The transfer ceremony...

When selling your home, the quicker the better. But before putting your house on the market there are a few simple things you can do to ensure it makes a positive first impression when potential buyers come looking. These 10 tips won't take you much time or cost much money but they will give your home a more welcoming appeal. 1. Look at your house from the outside in. How does your house look from the street?  Start by putting away all the extra stuff in the yard (lawn equipment, toys, junk, etc). Next, make sure the lawn is mowed, gutters are clean, and in the summer put out a few containers of plants to welcome guests into your home. Pay attention to little things, like if your mailbox is rusty replace it with a new one. A new mailbox isn't very expensive but it can make a huge differ...

Well, almost.  But I’m done being the Board President of the Southeast Alaska Board of REALTORS® Tonight we had our transitional meeting.  I will step back as Past-President. WHEW.  What a run.  We coordinated some great education, raised money for charity and RPAC, and started planning the state convention which will be held in Juneau in September 2010. Congratulations to Gwen Place, as 2010 President!

One of the activities that bring me out of winter and into spring involves gardening.  Catalogues, planning and dreaming!  This year, it seems many of my favorite companies have either delayed sending them out, or perhaps have gone paperless.  At least a few companies have switched to sending paper catalogues every other year as well.  That’s fine – less clutter. Part of a great landscaping plan involves planning.  Our gardening season is wet, cool and short in Southeast Alaska, so there seems to be a lot of time to plan and dream during the long winters.  This year is especially hard because we have so little snow cover. (Hopefully I mulched enough to protect my hundreds of bulbs!)  When we have white on the ground, it seems to reflect what little light we have.  Right now, the sun c...

As we start gaining daylight, it's easy to think of summer.  I'm ready - yes, already! In late winter, I look forward to summer hobbies, like fishing, gardening, hiking, fishing - oh yeah, I already said fishing!  Tonight I was looking through photos on my computer and this one especially made me look forward to warmer temperatures and time out on the boat.  I have friends who take their boats out in winter, but ours is tucked away inside a "boat condo" - a larger garage.

Yes, this letter is real. December 4, 2009  Dear JP Morgan Chase – I have enclosed some documentation and I hope someone can help me.  I represent a homeowner who wishes to sell their home.  We have an accepted offer.  Payoff amount was requested November 6, and several times since. A notice of default was filed November 25 - over two weeks after the first request for payoff (several times, we were told you never received the request).  Are you just trying to run up the bill? The title company was told that if they called again, they would “go to the bottom of the pile”.  Money to pay the loan has been at the title company for weeks.  This is NOT a short sale! Fortunately, this is a cash buyer.  If there were a new mortgage involved, this deal would have crashed and burned weeks ago.  I...
