Water plays an important part in the lives of everyone, especially those of us who live in the desert.  Lake Havasu City, in particular, owes much of its livelihood to the water.  Unfortunately, it seems that every summer, we hear of at least one death on the lake due to drinking and (boat) driving, carelessness or some other avoidable reason.  That's why things like the Lake Havasu Tri-State Boating Safety Fair are important to attend.

This Saturday, May 18th, the Boating Safety Fair will be featured on the London Bridge Beach Park Stage in the Lake Havasu English Village.  Boating officials from Arizona and the surrounding states will be on hand to provide valuable boating safety information.  Every boat is required to have at least one US Coast Guard approved life jacket that is the proper size for every person onboard the vessel.  Bring your old life jackets in to have them checked out by the boating officials.  If they are unsafe or your family has simply outgrown them, you can trade them in as long as supplies last.  The boating officials will also provide a free vessel safety check.  So, bring your boat through the Channel to get the "once over".

Admission to the Lake Havasu Tri-State Boating Safety Fair is absolutely free.  For more information, call Officer S. Angel with the Arizona Game & Fish Department at (928) 916-8519.  Bring your old life jackets or ride up in your own boat so that officials can check it out to make sure it is safe for some water fun this summer.  They key to having a great time on Lake Havasu is safety.  Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to keep you, your family and your friends safe on the lake.

On Thursday, you'll probably be gorging yourself on turkey and all the trimmings.  So, after you've had a nice long nap to sleep off the after-effects, take the family and your friends down to the English Village for the 18th Annual Lake Havasu Festival of Lights.  Beginning Friday, November 23rd and continuing through to New Year's Day, the entire English Village and all along the London Bridge will be lit up by more than 500,000 Christmas lights.

Whether you walk through the village or take an evening ride through the Channel, you'll become a kid again as you stare in wonder at the sparkling lights outlining the local Lake Havasu businesses and London Bridge as well as trees, light poles and more.  Santa himself will be visiting our little city on Friday as well.  So, make sure to bring your camera with you so you can get a picture with the big guy.  Free parking will be available both outside the English Village and at the London Bridge Resort.

While you're enjoying the light display, consider getting a start on your Christmas list by visiting any of the unique shops located in the English Village.  You can also enjoy a great meal at one of the area restaurants while the lights provide a seasonal backdrop.  You'll quickly see why this has become an annual tradition for all Lake Havasu residents.

The Lake Havasu Festival of Lights starts up the Friday after Thanksgiving after sundown.  Show your out-of-town guests our city's biggest landmark in all its holiday glory.  There's nothing like seeing the London Bridge lit up with multi-colored lights at night to get you ready for the holiday season.

Calling all Havasu dog lovers!  You know how amazing your little bundle of fur is.  How about sharing that with the rest of the city?  This weekend, take them to London Bridge Beach for the Lake Havasu Pooch Party in the Park.

Unlike the stuffy pedigree dog shows, this party is for ALL Lake Havasu dogs and their humans.  Every breed and mix are welcome to compete.  There will be no prancing around in an arena at this dog show.  Instead, your canine companion can compete in categories such as Best Wag, Most Irresistible Ears, Best Kisser and Most Unique Tail.  Competitors of all ages are welcome, too, from puppy to senior. 

In addition to the competition, live demonstrations from the Police and Sheriff's K-9 Teams, the all-Canine sports team "Havasu Hot Dogs" and the Havasu Dog Scouts.  Happy human counterparts get to enjoy carnival games and tasty food as well as visiting one of the on-site doggy vendors.  You can even bring a new furry family member home by adopting a rescue dog at the party.  Proceeds from the party and dog show entry fees will be donated to local Havasu dog-related charities.

Everyone at the lake knows what October means.  No, not Halloween...Lake Havasu's London Bridge Days.  It's the time of year we commemorate and celebrate our city's most recognizable landmark.

In the early days of Lake Havasu City, there was a whole lot of land dotted with just a few houses around our beautiful lake.  Robert McCulloch, the city founder, wanted to do something to really bring people out to the area.  When the old London Bridge was scheduled to be demolished in lieu of a new one being built in England, Mr. McCulloch arranged to buy the bridge, have the bricks shipped to the desert and spent three years having it carefully reconstructed right here, in the middle of the desert.  After the reconstruction was completed in 1971, curious tourists and retirees made their way to the lake to see this most unique of attractions here in America and the rest, as they say, is history.

For the fitness-minded folks, a special London Days Zumba class will be held at the stage located under the bridge on Saturday, October 20th.  From 9am to 11:30am, all Lake Havasu residents and visitors are welcome to join in on some dance infused aerobic fun.  All fitness and age levels are welcome to join in.

The London Bridge Days Youth Talent Show takes place Thursday, October 25th, at the Aquatic Center at 6pm.  For more information on the event, including how your talented child can participate, please contact Janice Brown at (928) 453-8686.  Hurry, though.  The deadline for entries is October 19th.

The main event, however, happens the following weekend.  On Saturday, October, 27th, local Lake Havasu school marching bands and organizations show their community pride by participating in the London Bridge Days Parade.  The parade will take place along Main Street/McCulloch Blvd from Acoma to Capri beginning at 10am.  That evening, head over to the stage underneath the London Bridge for a special concert featuring country artist Matt Farris from 7pm to 10pm.

Finally, on Sunday, October 28th, the local Lake Havasu Boy Scout troop will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 7am to 11am in the English Village under the bridge.  Proceeds from the breakfast will help fund the special trips and activities the Boy Scouts participate in throughout the year.

Lake Havasu London Bridge Days are always a fun time in the city.  All events are absolutely free to the public.  Show your community spirit by attending any or all of these family-friendly events this month.

If you love country music, strap on your dancing shoes and get to boot scootin' in Havasu.  The Refuge Golf & Country Club in Lake Havasu City is holding a Boot Scootin' Boogie concert this Friday, May 25th and Saturday, May 26th in its Grand Ole Refuge Pavilion as part of its Refuge Concert Series.  This will be the last concert of the series for the year.

If last month's Lake Havasu Boat Show wasn't enough for you aqua-babies, then you're in luck.  Retail giant and fisherman's friend Bass Pro Shops is bringing its first ever Fishing Festival to Lake Havasu!  For three days beginning this Friday, May 4th, you will have the opportunity to see and test drive new models of boats, talk with vendors and maybe even participate in the fishing tournament.

Vendors and sponsors of the first ever Bass Pro Fishing Festival in Lake Havasu include Lowrance, Mercury, Navionics, A&M Graphics, Anderson Toyota and Days Inn Lake Havasu.  The boat show itself, which includes free demos, takes place all weekend.  The fishing tournament, however, will take place on Saturday and Sunday (May 5th & 6th).  Weigh-ins will happen at the end of each day's fishing (3pm).  The cost is $400 per boat (that includes $350 for registration and $50 for the Big Bass option), with approximately 150 boats expected to compete.  If you and your buddies are interested in participating, simply click here for your registration form.  There will be a special Angler's Appreciation Dinner held on Friday evening (May 4th) for all who participate.

On Sunday, get the little tykes interested in drowning some worms at the shoreline fishing tournament.  Open to anyone ages 5-15, kids will be competing for fun prizes.  The kids fishing tournament takes place from 8am to 12pm.  While kids under 13 don't need to have a fishing license, they do need to be accompanied by an adult who does and must bring their own fishing equipment with them.  If the lake proves a little too much for your youngster, there will be a giant inflatable pool that they can cast their lines into instead.

Of course, there will also be food available for purchase throughout the entire three day event.  The inaugural Bass Pro Fishing Festival in Lake Havasu City will take place from 8am to 6pm on Friday and 5:30am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday at Windsor State Park (Lot #4).  This is sure to be fun for the entire family.  What's better than spending a day at the lake with your family?  Show your support so we can guarantee Bass Pro Shops comes back again next year!

It's that time of year, folks.  The 2012 Lake Havasu Boat Show has arrived!  It's fitting that a city known for its fantastic lake hosts one of the biggest boat shows in the Southwest.  We do take our water activities seriously around these parts.  That's why one weekend isn't enough for a boat show here.  Instead, there will be amazing deals, events and fun for everyone from now through Sunday, April 28th.

This weekend (April 21st and 22nd), vendors of more than 40 different brands of boats, pontoons, wakeboards, cruisers, sportboats and personal watercraft will be showcasing the latest and greatest aquatic wonders at Lake Havasu State Park's Windsor 4 located right next to Hampton Inn on London Bridge Road.  Show hours are from 9am to dusk today and 9am to 3pm on Sunday.  Qualified buyers will be able to have their own personal boat demo done after 3pm on Sunday or by appointment on Monday, April 23, from 9am to 4pm.  All demos will launch from the Windsor Beach Launch Ramp.  Admission to the boat show is just $2 for adults and free for kids ages 12 and under.  Parking is free.

If you want to see the boats in action, watch one of the races scheduled.  Today's schedule includes Men's Marathon water ski racing at 12:30pm and Offshore power boat racing at 2:15pm.  If you can't make a race today, though, don't worry.  There will be more racing for the adrenaline junkies scheduled for Sunday, April 22:

• 9am - Mini Marathon water ski racing
• 9;45am - Women's Marathon water ski racing
• 11am - Men's Marathon water ski racing
• 12:15pm - Relay water ski racing
• 1:30pm - Main Event: Offshore power boat racing
