Chemainus BC, Where History, Inventiveness, the Arts and Lumber Jacks, find a common interest and community.   Chemainus BC, an idyllic community located in the Cowichan Valley, about 45 minutes North East of Victoria BC on Amazing Vancouver Island, went from  Native community with a protected bay to a logging and mill town, before a major slow down in the lumber industry almost turned it into a ghost town.... The remaining residents decided that they where not going to give up on their town without a fight, and decided on depicting their history, heritage and culture in the 40+ Murals and Sculptures that we now enjoy. Today Chemainus is one of the must visit day trip destination near Victoria, with a wonderful walking tour that takes you by the 40+ murals, the amazing town core is a tr...

Cowichan, B.C. - A Beautiful Little Community Recently, we traveled over to Vancouver Island, to visit my daughter.  We decided to stay over at a little community near the school, called Cowichan Bay.  This is such a charming place, very west coast, and dare I say, "granola".  How would you like to wake up to this view every morning?  This was the view from our hotel room.  Stunning.  In the morning, we wandered down to the local bakery and cheese shop.  It was fun to see all the funky, artsy stores, and to smell the wonderful, freshly brewed coffee, and taste the still warm, home made breads.  If you're ever driving down Vancouver Island, don't forget to stop in at Cowichan, located half way between Nanaimo and Victoria.    I love the driftwood banister on these steps.

Back to School – Bitter Sweet The leaves are turning, it’s starting to rain, the nights are getting chillier, it’s time for children to return to school.     This year, my daughter decided she wanted to change schools.  She had been attending a local high school, here in North Vancouver, but she wanted a change.  Her sister, Maddy, attended boarding school at Brentwood College on Vancouver Island, and Dominique wanted to follow in her sister’s footsteps, enrolling in grade 11 at Brentwood.   Brentwood is a wonderful school.  When I grew up, it was an all-boys school, and “bad” boys were often sent there to get straightened out.  Now Brentwood is 50% girls and boys, and excels in academics, rowing, and the arts.  The technology in the school is state of the art.  Instead of a black board...

The little town of Chemainus, B.C., once a forest town, needed something to generate new revenue, so they got creative. They invited artists from around the world to generate art on the sides of buildings. Located on the east side of Vancouver Island between Victoria and Nanaimo, this is a MUST stop for any tourist. The project started in 1982 with five murals; today there are 41 murals and 13 sculptures which attract 400,000 visitors a year. A TOUR OF THE MURALS No visit to Chemainus is complete without sampling one of their legendary ice cream cones. Buy one and walk around looking at all the art work which is now world famous. The last weekend in June is the "Festival of the Murals". This celebration continues though the summer with outdoor theatre, puppetry, clowning, food booths, ...

As you pass through the custom electronic wrought iron gates you realize this home is something special. You pass several waterfalls and ponds that run the length of the long driveway. As you get closer you notice the large pillars and covered deck. The six acres of wooded land the home sits on is beautifully and tranquil. You step inside the home and find an atrium ceiling with a bridge that connects the two wings of the home. There is extensive use of hardwood flooring throughout the home. The main level features a large living room just off the kitchen with wood burning fireplace with a slate surround. The gourmet kitchen boasts cherry wood custom cabinetry, granite counters, stainless appliance and a breakfast bar which opens into the living area. The kitchen has amble storage with ...

One of the highlights of our visit to Vancouver Island, BC was stopping in a small Cowichan Valley town called Chemainus, "The Little Town That Did". Chemainus has been settled for over 140 years and thrived as a mill town until the 1980s when the slowing of the forestry industry caused the mill to close down. Faced with devastating unemployment and a possible demise of their industrious community, Karl Schultz sought to save the town by creating the 'Chemainus Mural Project'. Artists came from far and wide to paint detailed murals depicting the town and surrounding area's history on the exterior walls of the buildings. Soon tourists started to flock in by the thousands to view the murals and the town was saved. Take a tour of all of the murals here. If you visit Vancouver Island, don't...

Where is Crofton British Columbia you ask? Well Crofton is a quick ferry ride from Salt Spring and Crofton houses are half Salt Spring price. Well even less than half. Crofton properties face salt Spring and the town is on a slight hill and most of the houses get an ocean view. Why are Crofton homes so low price? Well Crofton is the home of a Pulp Mill and sometimes the town stinks. That is pretty blunt but it does lets not sugar coat it. The up side to Crofton property prices is that when and if the mill ever closes the price of a home in Crofton BC Canada will sky rocket. Will the mill close? I don't know but you can buy a Crofton home and rent it out and wait. Read more about the mill here http://www.escapetosaltspring.com/Crofton_homes/page_1838600.htmlFor all your Salt Spring or Cr...
