Holly Park in Bernal Heights - Hidden in Plain Site!

For many people Bernal Heights is a neigborhood that is considered a secret.  Unless you need to be in Bernal Heights you most likely never see since it's not a neighborhood you drive through to get to another place.  Once you get into Bernal Heights you will be pleasantly surprised at the lovely homes, neighborhood shops and the many parks.

I had some time to go up into Holly Park in Bernal Heights, a park which is located in the souther part of Bernal Height a few block south of Cortland Avenue.  This adorable park is on a hill.  You need to walk up into it to see among other things a baseball field, a basketball court, tennis court, children's play area and pleasant walkways and sitting areas.

Additionally you will be able to relax and enjoy some of the best views available in this part of Bernal Heights.  I was able to capture some of the scenes from this park hidden plainly in site!

Earth Day at Bernal Hill on April 20 Join the SF Recreation and Parks and REI for Earth Day this year at Bernal Hill to help restore habitat and trails. On April 20th from 9 a.m. to noon, come for a vigorous morning workout removing invasive radish from the hillside or repairing the trail tread. Enjoy watershed activities with Kids In Parks to learn more about erosion. Volunteers should wear long sleeves, pants, and sturdy closed-toed shoes. 	THE OWNERS Over dinner one night in the winter of 2006, three food-industry veterans dreamed up a new joint venture. All current or former residents of Bernal Heights, Tia Harrison, Melanie Eisemann, and Angela Wilson envisioned a butcher shop and specialty market with great food and quality service that would serve the needs of the local families in the community. In 2007 they opened Avedano's Holly Park Market on Cortland Avenue in a space that fittingly was once home to a beloved neighborhood butcher shop. The building has been a butcher shop or market for the better part of the last century; the original shop having opened on the site in 1901. Many of the antique furnishings and equipment still survive and have been incorporated into the current design, lending the shop an authentic period feel. The new owners have restored the shop to its former splendor, including the vintage neon sign, installed by theCicero's predecessors, Bleuss Meats, which proudly shines once again in Bernal Heights. The name Avedano's is derived from the maiden name of Tia's grandmother Flora, a first-generation Italian American whose family immigrated to San Francisco from Italy only days before the infamous earthquake of 1906. The name evokes family, tradition, and an important era of San Francisco's history. Many of the dishes on the prepared foods menu were inspired by Flora Avedano.
