urban constructionIn most major Cities, land is lacking for new construction.. as a result, high rise buildings are needed to fulfill residential requirements.  While multi-family buildings are not new, in San Francisco, CA, large multi-family dwellings are the only option for new construction.

San Francisco, CA, the fourth largest city of the State, occupies approximately 46.2 square miles (excluding the water surrounding it on three sides) or as natives like to moniker “7 x 7”.  It is home to 800,000+ residents and within the downtown core, single family homes are few and far between.

At the corner of Market and Dolores Streets, a former Ford dealership is being transformed into a mixed use development. The completed project will house a Whole Foods Market on the ground floor and 82 studio, one and two-bedroom condo homes. Thank goodness parking for both is planned; however, with only one space designated per unit, overflow will tax the already very limited street parking.

urban construction 2The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013… PHA and many of my neighbors have mixed feelings about this project. We understand the need for new housing, but are not happy with the upcoming influx of traffic to the Whole Foods Market and the further reduction in street parking.

Craving Fish for Dinner!

After a long day of packing up a client who is moving to Santa Barbara, the thought of cooking dinner was extremely unpleasant.. San Francisco has an abundance of restaurants, both casual and fine dining. So... all I had to do was think about what I wanted!

I decided I wanted fish … but didn’t want to look for parking or deal with an upscale crowd. So, I parked my car by my garage at home, and walked three short blocks to the Woodhouse Fish Company.

WFC (Woodhouse Fish Company) is owned by two brothers – Dylan and Rowan MacNiven. The original location (near my house) opened in 2006 and is at 2073 Market Street, at the corner of Market & 14th Streets in San Francisco.

The second location, opened in 2009… is at 1914 Fillmore Street.  A “sister" restaurant called West of Picos, opened in July 2012 on Valencia Street – it serves southwestern fare and has a full bar.

Woodhouse Fish - ScallopsTonight’s special at WFC on Market St. was dry scallops. It’s served over a bed of pureed beets with a light white wine vinaigrette, shaved brussel sprouts and diced butternut squash. And, the scallops were cooked to perfection. Delicious.

Their fish and chips, home-made coleslaw and New England clam chowder… are also pretty tasty!  Even though they have a limited wine and beer menu, their house white... a pinot grigio is quite good.

If you’re ever in the neighborhood, I highly recommend that you stop by and check them out.  Casual dining… and no reservations.
