Our small office has planned a fund raiser thru the American Red Cross, for benefit of Haiti.  This Sat. evening 1/23 at La Veta Inn.  And our equally small regional Spanish Peaks Board of Realtors made the first pledge today, of $1,000.  And next pledge came from a competitor broker, for $100.  We are so appreciative and aware that every small step can produce worthy results.

Wahatoya and the Spanish Peaks The Spanish, Mexican, Utes, Apache, French and even the Aztec all had names for these beautiful mountains. Travelers, Explores, Trappers, Miners and Settlers have all used these mountains as a land mark. Wahatoya means breasts from the earth, or mothers breasts. Today most people call these mountains the Spanish Peaks.

We are so very lucky to have the championship Grandote Peaks Golf Course right here in La Veta.  This week the Golf Resort opened their new dining operation.  Our Bachman Real Estate Office enjoyed the first seating by holding our weekly sales meeting at the Club for breakfast.  Not just any breakfast, but a beautifully presented breakfast wonderfully prepared by none other than our local Sales Agent, Jim Vietti.  Following breakfast with Jim and Dave,  Kelly Popejoy gave us a tour of the new Grandote Homes under construction.  The two architect designed Medditeranean style homes were a big hit to all of us.  Then Thursday evening, Vietti and company  served 20 people to a delightful 4 course gourmet dinner. The course is open and in great condition so grab your clubs and come join us....

Hi friends and neighbors, welcome to my new blog.  As a "newbie" I will ease into this by suggesting that if you have an interest in rural mountain lifetstyles of southern colorado, then this may be the blogsite for you.   I will post a wide variety of comments dealing with local news, views and gossip around the area.  And how they may relate to the local real estate market or recreational activites that the Southern Colorado lifestyle can offer. And I will post articles from my newsletter, my LaVetaRealty website and my LaVeta-Cuchara blog. And I will always try to answer your questions concerning the La Veta and Cuchara area.  So, welcome to my blog.  It's sure nice to be here with you.

When you drive into Walsenburg Colorado it's like stepping back in time. There is one stop light, a couple of well known restaurants and everybody knows everybody else.  The court house and neighboring Walsenburg Miners Museum stand in the center of town. All records in the court house are kept in file cabinets not online. There is no need to call ahead for an appointment, just don't stop in at lunch hour.  The lime stone buildings are functionally obsolete, but still really serve a purpose for the community. The dates etched into the stone above the door ways are from 1886.

At the base of the Spanish Peaks is the tiny town of La Veta, Colorado. The population of this little town is approx 925, but that number fluctuates in the summer. The town is not far from the Sante Fe trail, Cuchara, and sits at 7000 feet above sea level. The Christ the King church was started in 1943 and finished being built in 1945 by the parishioners on land that had been foreclosed on and quit claimed to the church. This mission styled church is the church for about 45 families in the area.

If you want to be transported back to the "Good old Days", you need to visit historical La Veta, Colorado, for Fort Francisco Days being held on July 28, 2007.  The locals put on their Sunday best and make their way down to the Fort Francisco Museum for a day of food and entertainment.  Attendees are asked to dress to reflect the time period (late 1800's).  Col. John M. Francisco traveled to La Veta in 1834 and decided "This is paradise enough for me".  Although Col. Francisco did not buy land in the area for another 24 years, he never forgot the pull of this paradise.  For many of the locals (like me) this is why we live here.  As a fifth generation native of this small town, I can say that my family and several other local families have donated several items of interest to the Fort Mu...

I've seen plenty of bears out on my ranch over thee last few years, but the encounter I had yesterday evening was by far the most exciting. It also taught me a lot about just how inquisitive bears can really be. for some background, I'm a real estate broker in La Veta Colorado. I sell ranches, homes and land in the Cuchara valley. I am also building my own log home in the mountains outside of town. I have a 5th. wheel trailer pulled up on the building site to stay in during construction. This is my trailer during the excavation last year.Back to the bear: I finished work yesterday and went back to my trailer and made some dinner. After eating I settled in to watch a little satellite TV. I was laid back in my recliner almost ready to doze off around 7:30pm... There was still plenty of da...
