Clearwater Florida Hosts Ford Ironman 70.3 Again

Clearwater Florida - As luck would have it the 2007 Clearwater Ironman 70.3 Race past several popular Clearwater neighborhoods  (Grovewood, Morningside, The Meadows) off Belcher Road this past Saturday.

 What a site to behold. It was inspirational to all who watched it.

Several of the Clearwater neighborhood kids got their bikes out - dreaming...dreaming of racing like that one day. If only they understood what the almost 1500 racers signed up for. It's hard to believe that this is actually only half a triathalon.

We even saw one participant, Maj. David Rozelle, an Iraq war veteran who is an amputee complete the race with one leg - it was so inspirational, especially in light of Monday being Veteran's Day. All I could think was.."Thank you!"  

We watched like cheerleaders at a high school game - swept up by the excitement of the challenge they'd undertaken and what these determined men and women were accomplishing. 

They had already completed the the 1.2 mile swim and 50 of the 56 miles of biking through Clearwater. We heard their wheels literally whiz by as the cheering crowd rang cowbells and encouraged them on. We were watching from the 50 mile mark - the racers just had 6 more miles to go to get back to Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach - then they had to finish a 13.1 mile run.

Clearwater Florida - Ford Ironman 70.3 Race - November 10, 2007

  The winner, Andy Potts won by completing the 70.3 mile course in an amazing 3 hours 42 minutes and 33 seconds - that's impressive.   While they say the view only changes for the lead dog...in this case, each man and woman, regardless of place, achieved their own personal triumph.today, on a beautiful Clearwater day of 78 degrees, tenacity won over fatigue.    This is the second year in a row that the Ford Ironman 70.3 World Championship was held in Clearwater Florida and it's easy to see why. Clearwater Florida Prepares for Halloween

Halloween is a fun time of year around Clearwater to cut loose, decorate your home or condo, carve a pumpkin and enjoy the lighter side of life by dressing up, attending Halloween parties and even going trick or treating with the kids.

Before you go out....Did you know that in the state of Florida, not just in the City of Clearwater, it is actually Illegal to wear a mask in public is you are over the age of 16.

It’s true. Now you might be wondering why? Well the way I understand it is that it is actually aimed at robbers – especially with respect to banks and convenient stores. 

So if you are planning to attend a Clearwater party or be out in the Clearwater or Tampa Bay area – be sure to take your mask off before going into public places to be safe. :-)

 

We always enjoy a good laugh and this was just for fun on Friday!

Pools & Kids that can't Swim Don't Mix

Whether you have a Clearwater pool home or not if you have kids then teaching them how to swim should be a priority in the Tampa Bay area. Unfortunately drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 in Florida.

We don't have a pool at our home and so as life would have it our youngest son has avoided becoming a proficient swimmer - now this is hard for me to believe since I've been swimming since I was 2 years old and swam competitively into High School. 

It just kind of happened and then before we knew it he had a "phobia" of putting his head under water. He would even voice that he thought he would drown. (it broke my heart) When I had approached taking lessons he would become hysterical and obviously terrified. I asked around to find a good swim teacher. The same name kept coming up..Mollie Brauer, owner of Making Waves Swim School    

As life would have it - several new friends moved into the neighborhood and they all had pools - so now my youngest was being left out because he couldn't be around these pools (with all the other kids) since he couldn't swim. This forced me to face his fears with him and enroll him in private swim classes with Ms. Mollie. He may have been one of her toughest students yet because at his age his fears were real and hard to overcome - the first lesson he screamed for his life - she calmy and patiently engaged him - with clever activities and a even-keel disposition. She just has a calming presence (even for the nervouse Mom sitting on the edge) and she encourages and motivates the kids to keep going one step further. It was truly amazing to watch.    

Ok, so as far as results go - she had him putting his head underwater and beginning to swim on his second lesson. The results we absolutely amazing and the thing I appreciate most about Ms. Mollie is that she is so caring and sensitive yet firm.  She never yelled just encouraged and praised his progress, while acknowleding and not just dismissing his feelings or concerns. Mollie kept working within his capabilities and building his confidence and trust. Below you will get to hear him talk about his experience in his own words (after just 6 lessons) - and trust me he tells things like they are!

I have some video of her teaching him, however, they are not loading properly but I hope the pictures will give you a sense of what it was like.

We have several private swim schools locally that just throw kids in the pool until they "just learn to swim" - while they are effective, personally, the way she connects with her students is quite impressive and was the kind of experience we wanted for our son. If you're lucky enough to have her teach your kids - I promise you won't be disappointed.

We live in a wonderful part of Florida and there's nothing better than a cool dip in a backyard pool on a hot summer day. Can't you just picture floating in the pool, relaxing, rejuvenating. This is how it should be...

Now let me tell you what can happen if you don't do your homework when you're buying that Lovely Tampa Bay Pool Home.

Jack and I spend the majority of our time working with Tampa bay Homebuyers and are big advocates and believers in Home Inspections. I am a member of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) which allows me to be a resource to my clients through my relationships with some of the areas most accomplished remodeling professionals.  In a state known sometimes for fly-by-night tradesman - referrals to the best remodeling contractors and professionals in the area has proven invaluable. 

In this case, Mark Thomas and his team of professionals at Skinee-Dip Pools & Spas, the largest Tampa Bay area Pool Remodelers and Pool Contractors in the 5 county Tampa Bay area inspected this pool and boy are our Home Buyers lucky they did! They know Tampa Bay pools since they've built over 3,000 since 1971 and do over 1000 pool remodels each year. These are the kind of expert resources we bring to our clients...

6 Reasons to get a Home Inspection before you buy a Clearwater Home 

Some people think expensive defects will be obvious. However, a lot of expensive defects are hidden and take some investigation to uncover. For example:

1. Roof Roof problems can be difficult to spot from the outside. The surface of a roof may look good, but you may find defects once you look at the other side of the roof and find stains, mold, or even where insects and rodents have gnawed away at the support members of the roof.

2. Plumbing Some of the most costly problems to fix are with the system that brings fresh water in and the system that takes sewage out. Inspectors look for telltale signs of problems during the inspection.

3. Electrical  Many home owners buy a home and then find there is not enough power to operate your appliances, lights, tools, washer, dryer, etc. In addition, it is not uncommon to find outdated fixtures that can cause shocks or worse.

4. Heating and Cooling The systems that supply the warm and cool air to your home are expensive to replace or repair, and the inspection includes an examination of these systems to make sure they function and are not underpowered.

5. Outside Wood If the home has wood anywhere on the outside, the condition of this wood is an indicator of good maintenance or of problems that need to be repaired. Some indications of problems here are stains, mold, insects and rodents.

6. Foundation Problems Homes are built on a foundation which holds up the home. Many times an inspection will reveal that the foundation has superficial problems, or these problems may be serious enough to cause cracks in walls, doors that won't close properly and floors that will be uneven. In some cases, these problems reveal that when the home was built, the ground beneath it was not well prepared causing major problems that are costly to repair.
