Imperial Martial Arts - Educating Children on Personal Safety - more then just Karate
Gustavo Alvarez (Florida Hometeam Realty)

Imperial Martial Arts cares about their young students well being and personal ability to protect themselves by developing self-awareness, avoidance techniques and if need be kick-ass.

These guidelines will educate both parents and children on personal safety, and may also prevent a tragedy.

1. Rehearse with your children their full name, address and telephone number. Teach them how to make emergency calls.

2. Have children avoid hanging out around lonely parks, woods, parking lots or even school yards late after school. Work out the best route to school or other places they go to often and then have them stick with this route.

3.Teach your children to pay attention to what is going on around them at all times.

4.Play games such as "What if" to help a child think about dangerous situations. Design role plays using situations that might be tempting or confusing to help him/her decide the best protective action. (example someone looking for a lost puppy in the park) (example-being touched on private parts by anyone).

5. Teach your children to never accept a ride from anyone they don't know.

6. Do not approach a vehicle to talk to the occupants. Stay back away from the vehicle. If an occupant gets out, immediately run to a safe place. Run the opposite way if possible.

7. Make sure your child knows their neighborhood and knows where to go if there is an emergency.

8. When personalizing clothing or backpacks, make sure your child's name is not visible to strangers who could use the information to confuse your child and lure them away.

9. Monitor your child's computer use. Make sure the areas they are going into are safe for children. If they use chat programs learn who they are communicating with. Advise them to never give out personal information online. Also, tell them to never arrange to meet with anyone they meet online.

10. If someone appears interested in your child - or too good to be true- they probably are. Remember child predators are good at the art of coercion. They will attempt to befriend your child and win their confidence.

11. Teach them to say "No" if someone they don't know asks them to go to anywhere with them. Let your children know that it is okay to say "no" to an adult, especially in a dangerous situation.

12. If they are grabbed by someone trying to abduct them, instruct them to yell, scream, kick, scratch, bite, fall to the ground, do anything to draw attention from bystanders. Yell "This is not my mommy (or Daddy)" keep yelling.

13. NEVER GIVE UP! Learn to defend yourself!  Keep fighting to get away.

IMPERIAL MARTIAL ARTS - FITNESS COURSE - CARDIO KICKBOXING
Gustavo Alvarez (Florida Hometeam Realty)

Welcome to the Imperial Martial Arts Martial Fitness Course and congratulations on your commitment to making real changes in your physical conditioning. This course is not only designed to get you in the best shape of your life, but to teach you basic training principles that you will have for the rest of your life!

We are all starting this course at different levels. Even though we will strive to make the physical changes we are looking for, we must be realistic. For those of you who live a sedentary lifestyle, the fact that you are now exercising and focusing on your diet is a major life change. Others, who are already used to living a physical lifestyle, should have higher expectations than someone who has not been training at all.

How much you put into this course has a direct effect on how much you get out of it. If, during the course, illness, injury or death (which are the only reasons for not training) keep you from training, do not quit, finish the course. Completing 50-70% of the course is far better than not having done anything at all.

You will be asked to train three days a week at the school, utilizing resistance training and fitness kickboxing. You should also plan on training outside of the school whether it be additional cardio work like running or biking, or utilizing the resistance bands.  I know this sounds like a huge commitment, but to achieve your fitness goals, this is what it takes. I like to use the analogy of a plane taking off. For a plane to reach cruising altitude, it must first full throttle the engines to lift off the ground and into the air. Think of this course as the full throttle to get you in the air, where you can cruise. As anybody in good physical condition knows, it is a lot easier to stay in shape than it is to get in shape..

This course combines resistance training, fitness kickboxing, nutrition and flexibility to help you achieve your fitness goals. You will develop a keen understanding, of how these components relate to each other. This manual is a complete guide, including all the components and complete illustrations to make sure you are performing the exercises properly and safely. Just like any workbook you would receive on any  subject you were trying to learn, the more detailed you are, the more you will learn.

Use the workbook as a reference guide to make sure that every time you train, you try to do just a little better than the time before. You need to keep good records when it comes to your nutritional intake. You may find our nutritional recommendations a bit simple. I have done this for a reason. Nutrition is not only an important part of this training session, it is also the most confusing. For the next several weeks, you will want to maintain a very simple diet.

This nutritional plan is designed to give you good basic guidance on how to eat. This is not a diet. It is a healthy way of eating the right foods, portions and servings for the rest of your life. The best advice is to keep it simple.

The kickboxing portion of the course will be the most exciting for both mind and my body. I have always felt that learning fitness kickboxing techniques allows us to take our mind off training and focus on learning a skill. Focus on developing your kickboxing skills-they will be there one day when you really need them.

"Folks, we are going on a journey. We will carry our wounded and shoot the dissenters." How does this quote relate to this course? Do not give up on yourself because we won't give up on you. If this course is followed properly, you will make major physical changes in the ten weeks you are training. These changes do not come easily. There will be times you are sore, tired, grouchy and just not wanting to train. This is where your teammates, coaches and instructors come into play. They are there to help you, guide you and keep you focused on your goal. They will not give up on you, so do not give up on yourself. Good Luck!
