My Favorite Ocean Front Communities on East Oahu: Diamond Head Diamond Head offers a great location, close enough to downtown Honolulu and adjacent Waikiki, as well an easy drive to other areas of east Oahu such as Kahala and Hawaii Kai. Diamond Head is called home by some of Oahu’s wealthiest, including affluent retired and senior corporate executives. The neighborhood offers fine dining, private clubs and luxury homes, many with spectacular ocean and Diamond Head views. My Favorite Ocean Front Communities on East Oahu: Niu Beach Part of a larger area called Niu Valley, this quiet neighborhood is located between Hawaii Loa Ridge and Kuliouou, Niu Beach is an area with homes on the ocean. From the Kalanianaole Highway, Niu Beach is on the makai, or ocean side and Niu Valley is on the mauka or mountain side. The area may be most famous for being the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. Both areas consist primarily of single family homes with no condos in this area. My Favorite Hawaii Kai Marina Front Townhome Communities: Colony Marina Colony Marina was built in 1969 and offers some of the largest marina front gated townhomes, many with boat docks. There are 26 4-bedroom/3-bath homes in this complex and most are roughly 1,914 square feet in size with a 264 square foot lanai. Almost all of the units are on the water with frontage on the marina roughly as wide as your townhome, which could be 25-30 feet, and as mentioned, many have boat docks. Many of the homes here face homes in West Marina, although since the waterway is not too narrow, this is not an issue. Amenities include a nice community pool, recreation deck and clubhouse. My Favorite Hawaii Kai Marina Front Townhome Communities: Marina Palms Marina Palms is located across from the Colony Marina and consists of 54 units built in 1966. There are 28 3-bedroom/2-bath and 26 2-bedroom/1-bath townhomes, ranging in size from 890 to 1,005 square feet. The marina is about fifty feet across in most areas, easy enough to turn in and many of the townhomes do have docks in front of their units. Views are not the best here, but this is an affordable, basic marina front lifestye. This complex is a bit of a secret, as many in Hawaii Kai have never heard of it. My Favorite Hawaii Kai Marina Front Townhome Communities: Gateway Peninsula This complex is the first one you see when you enter Hawaii Kai from the west. There are 17 3-bedroom/2.5-bath and 22 4-bedroom/2.5-bath homes on two stories and are quite spacious, ranging in size from 1,912 to 2,014 square feet. Many of the units are located right on the marina front and have boat docks. Although built in the 1970′s, many units have been nicely remodeled and upgraded. Some unit views are quite nice. If there is a downside, it is that the complex is located near the highway, so traffic noise can be an issue for some units. Amenities include a community pool, clubhouse and a resident manager. My Favorite Hawaii Kai Marina Front Townhome Communities: Kaimala Marina Located on Lunalilo Home Road, next to the Esplanade, townhomes here vary in size and configuration. Of the 90 townhomes, there are 1-bedroom/1-bath units 697 square feet in size with a 285 square foot lanai; 2-bedroom/2-bath units that are 880 square feet in size plus a 620 square foot lanai; 3-bedroom/2.5-bath units of 1,2801 to 1,323 square feet plus a 324 to 364 square foot lanais; 3-bedroom/3-bath units of 1,267 square feet plus an 803 square foot lanai; and 4-bedroom/3-bath units of 1,555 square feet plus a 481 square foot lanai. My Favorite Hawaii Kai Marina Front Home Communities: Spinnaker Isle Without question, Spinnaker Isle is one of my favorite waterfront neighborhoods in Hawaii Kai. Consisting of 92 single family homes all located on Kumukahi Place and every home has waterfront footage on the Hawaii Kai Marina with backyards facing the water. The entrance is off Hawaii Kai Drive and across from access to Hahione Valley, a bridge takes you into the community where the road brances into two long cul-de-sacs. Of the roughly 108 homes located here, most all of them border the water. My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: West Marina, in the Hawaii Kai Region West Marina is a relatively large area of Hawaii Kai bordered by Lunalilo Home Road, Hawaii Kai Drive and Kawaihae Street. Homes here were built in the mid 1960′s and is an eclectic mix of architectural styles and varying sizes of homes. Most homes here were built around the Hawaii Kai Marina with seven fingers of land creating marina front lots with boat docks and easy access to Maunalua Bay and the ocean. Homes can range in size from 1,200 to 3,00 square feet. In 2002-2003, a developer named Stanford Carr built and completed the Hawaii Kai Peninsula project adding new, high-quality condominiums to this area.
