A Heated Festival in Collinsville, Illinois I love summers in Southwestern Illinois, not for the searing temperature and high humidity that can wilt those who aren't used to it, but for the various activities and festivals in many townships and villages. It's the time for festivals, outdoor picnics, sailing, fine art shows, and parades for families, residents, and visitors.   One of the festivals is the 2011 Collinsville Illinois International Horseradish Festival that will conclude on Sunday, June 5, from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM at Woodland Park. There are tons of activities scheduled for the full day: contests, food and drink, relay race, the Little Miss Horseradish Festival Pageant, and of course horseradish, in fresh and processed form, (sample of product on the left.) So come on out an...

Baby New Year: "Happy New Year!  But hey, old man, there seems to be a lot of long faces and frowns on the folks.  What kind of mess did you leave me in your year of 2009?" Father Time:    "Blah!!  I didn't do it - not my fault - could have been worse - it didn't start on my watch - give me a break - I did the best I could -mumble, grumble and Blah!"  Baby New Year: "Ok, OK, so what happened?" Father Time:    "Well, basically, people's homes are not worth what they used to be, or what they thought they would be.  There was a whole lot of finger pointing going on in my year - bad loans, greedy people, bubbles, stupid people, bad this, bad that and bad some other things.  Everyone assumed home values would continue to go up - they always did before - but for the past few years they've act...

There are some holiday traditions in St. Louis' Illinois suburbs that are just sweeter than others. At both Ravanelli's restaurants -- in Collinsville and Granite City, Illinois -- the Christmas season brings out the artist in family, staff and friends. These "architects of icing" design and create the most incredible gingerbread houses many people have ever seen. In fact, the term "house" is certainly a misnomer. The gingerbread structures on display this year range from a dreamy fairytale castle to a bayou swamp shack (complete with alligator). After you've decided which gingerbread creation is your favorite, be sure to save time for lunch or dinner at Ravanelli's, a Metro East favorite since 1964. They're famous for their pressure-cooked chicken, Italian specialties( including a wond...

Hi, my name is Nancy and I am an aluminum Christmas Tree addict. Remember that movie, "Fly Away Home," where the newly hatched geese imprinted on the little girl (played by a young Anna Paquin) and thought she was their mother? Well, I imprinted from an early age on the shiny, silver Christmas trees of the 1950s and 60s. There's no help for me now. The picture to the right was taken Christmas Eve of 1968 at my cousins' Collinsville, Illinois home.(I am the tall, awkward one in the back. My little brother is the cute redhead in front.) We had one of these hipster trees at our house too and so did the relatives on the other side of the family, so there was no shortage of aluminum to love no matter where you were on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. As a child I found it odd when we visited ...

Remember the classic musical, Gypsy? In it, the young Gypsy Rose Lee is confronted by three flamboyant strippers who tell her if she's going to succeed in their business she's "got to get a gimmick." Well, someone at the new joint called The Red Bar in Collinsville, Illinois was listening. They've got a great big gimmick and it's called "Giant Joe." Giant Joe is a massive Sloppy Joe served on a 14-ounce, 10-inch bun and topped with anything you like (within reason, I am sure). If one person can eat the Giant Joe in 30 minutes or less, it's free. All that fun costs just $11.95 and possibly a trip to the gastroenterologist. (That's Misty -- one of The Red Bar's friendly servers -- hoisting a Giant Joe bun to the right.) Gourmet Sloppy Joe's are the featured item at this restaurant/bar loc...

This weekend is home to one of my favorite Madison County Traditions - The Italian Fest in the heart of downtown Collinsville. Every year, folks from all over Madison County (and some from St. Louis, too) pack the streets of downtown Collinsville for a taste of Italy.  From traditional favorites like spaghetti and meatballs, to local inventions like toasted ravioli, there is something to please any palette. The Italian Fest originally started in 1984 as a Columbus Day celebration for downtown business owners.  Since then, the yearly treat has expanded to include entertainment, 5k walk-runs, wine making contests and more. This year's event takes place Friday September 18th - Saturday September 19th. For a complete list of vendors and events, please visit http://www.italianfest.info

You gotta love Congress!  How about an imaginary real estate address, now that crying lie is the new behavior.  I'll do the address, cry lie and do the spin - more efficient that way, and maybe more fun - smile. Part of the speech:  "I am not a real estate salesman, and I don't sell houses.  I'm only in the business to provide professional service to clients, whether they buy or sell a house or not!  I always put their interest first - even ahead of my own.  (And by the way, this is a great time for anybody to buy or sell a home!)"  Shouted from the floor: "That's a lie.  Everyone knows you only get paid after a sale.  You're just like a used car salesman that would say anything to make a deal!"  The truth?  Have you ever felt that way, but were too polite to cry "liar?"  Sure you have,...

A Realtor on the west coast recently coined a new phrase to describe his market - the "lender's market."  I like it!  Yes, he was voicing his frustration about California-crazy market conditions that are not the same as ours, thankfully.  His concept does explain, however, some aspects that may affect you as a consumer here in the metro east side of Saint Louis.  Let's look at it. Classically, a buyer's market is characterized by a large inventory and a relatively slow sales volume.  It is often expressed in terms of the absorption rate - the number of months it would take to sell off the inventory at the present rate of sales.  Most would agree that we have a buyer's market here today.  In terms of control, buyer's rule!  Buyers tend to have greater control of the time frames and ...

We live in the internet age and it is easier than ever before to locate your next home on-line.  Sometimes, this can cause us to think that we don't need the help of an agent.  But, this line of thinking could cost you time and money. What is it that a real estate agent does and why do you need one when you begin the search for your new home? Some people think that an agent just searches for houses and then lets you in to see them, however a great agent does sooooo much more. Were you aware that your agent actually represents your best interest during the home buying or selling process?  A great agent will spend time with you prior to your home search to find out exactly what your needs are.  A great agent will ask about your financial situation and develop a strategy to make sure you g...
