This year is Highlwood's Fourth Annual Garlic Fest - a fun (and stinky) event held at Everts Park from 4-9pm.  Highwood is known for its diverse number of restaurants and cuisines and this event celebrates garlic as it is used in many different types of dishes. As many as 5000 people will attend the event - garlic inspired dishes can be sampled for free or bought. There are two garlic categories:  savory and sweet and attendees can vote on which they prefer.  A sweet garlic dish?  Sounds odd, but I'm willing to give it a try. Treats will include the garlicky things we expect like pasta sauces, breads, butters, etc.  But the not-so-ordinary "sweets" will also be featured:  ice cream, cupcakes, candy, and cocktails.                                                                 The Great Pumpkin Fest is Back in Highwood Illinois.   It's that time of year - leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping and many homes are being decorated for Halloween. The festivities begin today October 19 through Saturday October October 22, 2011.  The residents of Highwood  are are excited to break a record on October 22,2011 as they attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the most Jack-O-Lanterns lit in one location.  In addition, the city Of Highwood and Keene, New Hampshire  have decided to compete against one another -  Go Highwood!!! There are Halloween fairs and festivals going on all over the North Shore right now, but probably the most eagerly anticipated is the Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival, a four day event taking place from October 19-22. There will be all the usual activities like hayrides, pony rides, live music, costume contests and pie eating contests, as well as the more unique Giant Pumpkin Land Regatta, where huge pumpkins are propelled by human power in a 150 yard race. But what makes this festival really special is that this little town with a population of less than 5000 people will try to break the Guinness World Record for the most carved and lit Jack o’ Lanterns. I’m not a food snob. But when I go out to eat I want to get what I pay for. If I go to Coco Pazzo, I know the tab will be high. And I know the food will be excellent: inspired dishes that are beautifully presented and delicious. When I go to Olive Garden I lower my expectations, for both the food and the price tag. Tonight, unfortunately, we stumbled into a restaurant with Olive Garden food (actually, not nearly as good as Olive Garden) and (almost) Coco Pazzo prices. We were up in Highland Park at the Bubble for the last soccer game of the indoor season.  Since we had nothing at home to make for dinner, we decided to head over to Highwood.
