Forbes magazine used subjective criteria to evaluate the downtown atmosphere of cities across the US in order to come up with their list of the Top 10. This is really how you choose your favorite cities, isn't it? By their ambiance, ease of getting from one point to the next, and amenities available along the way?

All of the downtowns chosen by Forbes have numerous parks and green spaces. Naturally, Kansas City was noticed for its' fountains and parks.

Kansas City's art community also tipped the scale in our favor. The new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is, in itself, a work of art. In addition, Kansas City's Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Kansas City Art Institute, First Fridays in the Crossroads, The Country Club Plaza, and the miriad of artists who choose to live and work in Kansas City make our city a beautiful place to call home.

Parks, fountains galore, BBQ, music, art, walkability, affordable living, friendly people - what more could you want?

Huge weekend in Kansas City

OPEN HOUSE - September 18, 2011

For years we’ve been anxiously awaiting the opening of theworld class Kaufmann Performing Arts Center – it’s here - finally!

The public is invited to the free Open House event on Sunday with a variety of musicians playing in the state of the art facility all afternoon - in addition to tours of the beautiful center.

Enjoy a great meal before, or after your visit to the center at the many close by restaurants - from downtown’s Power & Light District, to the Crossroads District or Crown Center.

Saturday, September 17th promises to be a wonderful experience with performances by Singer/Pianist Diana Krall and virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman, as well as a salute to Kansas City jazz featuring composer/musician Bobby Watson. The event is to showcase the halls new acoustics. Accompanying these great musicians is the Kansas City Symphony with Musical Director, Michael Stern. The interesting thing is that there is no sound system, or micrphones according to the acoustician. No seat is more than 100 feet from the stage. It is a must see facility, and I cannot wait to marvel at the sounds and wonderful views from the sleek wall of glass from this beautifully designed building.

 Note: The Friday night and Saturday night events have sold out.

Here is the schedule for the free Open House Weekend with the 450 performers representing 40 performance arts groups. The doors open at 11:00am, and the performances run from 12:00-5:00pm.

This Saturday from 1 - 4 pm, you can come in the Kauffman Center to look around this architectural wonder.

Helzberg Hall, with 1,600 seats, will be the new home of the Kansas City Symphony. A custom-designed, Casavant Frêres Pipe Organ stands 4 stories tall behind the Alaskan cedar stage. Helzberg Hall gleams with wood. The acoustics will be awesome!

The Muriel Kauffeman Theatre, with 1,800 seats, will be the new home of the Lyric Opera and the Kansas City Ballet. No seat in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre wil be more than 100 feet from the stage. Each seat is equipped with a translator screen for Opera attendees.

The Grand Opening is Friday September 17. Placido Domingo, The Canadian Brass, Tommy Tune, and Patty Lupone will perform along with the Kansas City Ballet, The Lyric Opera, the Kansas City Symphony and the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.

Saturday the 18th, the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Symphony Chorus will accompany performances by Diana Krall, Itzhak Perlman, and Bobby Watson. Music director will be Maestro Michael Stern.
