Well the weather has been crazy this year.  Too cold, too warm, too much snow, and finally not enough snow. Well you just have to make the best of it. Here is the family on a XC ski in Jackson NH.  Every day on the trails is a blessing!

My definition of cross country skiing used to be getting from the lodge to the chairlift!  But, over the years I have grown to love XC Skiing.  This year the snow was great in December and we got in some early skiing at Jackson, NH Ski Touring on the Wave Trail. The boys are both doing great.  This year Peter has really advanced.  He can beat his old man but still has to hustle to keep up with The Vallie Bear!

Every Year the Inns of the White Mountains put on a great cookie tour and Gingerbread House competition. For the third year, the Mayer family has baked, built and decorated a gingerbread house and donated it to support The MS Society. This year the boys really helped out.  We made "The Jackson Covered Bridge", as part of the theme A NEW ENGLAND HOLIDAY. I am proud to announce that for the third year we had a ton of fun and didn't win a single award. Well there is always, next year!

And now for something completly different.... Ever wonder where the words we use everyday in real estate come from? Mortgage- When an impoverished heir (eldest son of a noble) wished to borrow money, he would sign a pledge to pay when his father died and he came into his estate. mort = death, and gage is of Gothic origin relating to the word pledge.Economy- via Latin from Greek oikonomia = management of a household (oikos = house, and nomia = control.Offer- from Latin offerre = to present in sacrifice.Finance- From Late Latin financia from finare, to pay a fine, and finis, a settled payment.Location- From Latin locus, meaning place: hence location.Bungalow- From Hindi bangla = Bengali, house built in the style of Bengal (Bangladesh).Architect- from Greek arckhitekton = chief builder; a...

Not all the Turkeys live in Washington DC. This beautiful Tom has been running loose in Jackson NH since last Summer.  He has become a town fixture, standing in the middle of the road, pecking at tires and bringing traffic to a stand still. Hope to see you around Jackson this year.  The Cross Country has been excellent as has the downhill at Black Mountain & Wildcat.   If you want to look for Jackson NH Real Estate, check out www.Black-Bear-Realty.com  We know the area and all it's strange inhabitants!

A New Member Of The Family! This weekend we found a beautiful six month old Siamese Mix at the Conway Humane Society www.ConwayShelter.org .  He is perfect!  Valerie had grown up with Siamese as a child and Thai was in need of a home.  We lost our 17 year old Black Lab - Boxer Mix Winslow "Homer" The Furred last January and had waited to find someone special to fill the void.  Thai is very mellow, loves to be held, and seems more like a dog than a cat.  Thai is very shy, but he is getting comfortable with us.  He has started to sit with us as we read to the boys at night.             At first he wouldn't come out of his room and tried to hide in any small place he could find away from us.    Now I think Thai has started to become part of the family.  He even has a "Bear" name.    TY-Bear

Peter sights the Beatles on Abbey Road In Jackson NH! Ok, so "Pumkin Pete" and his mighty Orange Huskies didn't win this years Pumpkin People contest.  I can't believe those cute little doggies didn't sway the judges. I am blaming the British Invasion!  These four guys were staying at the Inn at Jackson and got all the attention this year.  Even my son seems impressed. Congratulations to Don & Joyce Bilger the Innkeepers for a great job.    Watch out! The Black Bear is gunning for you next year!

RETURN OF THE PUMPKIN PEOPLE! From the great white north, "Pumpkin Pete" and his famous orange huskies have arrived at Black Bear Realty, in Glen, New Hampshire! Each year the Jackson Chamber of Commerce challenges local businesses and residents to come up with Pumpkin People to delight and entertain the Fall Foliage Leaf Peepers driving through the White Mountains from October 1st through Columbus day.     This year there are some outstanding entries.  A magic show at the Inn at Ellis River, a spoof to Grey's Anatomy with Pumpkin Anatomy at the Carter Notch Inn, lots of disappointed Yankee Fans around town at the local watering holes, a beautiful Mother Nature at The Thompson House Eatery, Dog sledding "Pumpkin Pete" at Black Bear Realty, Oxen pulling at the Crowther Family Residence, ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER!  After a great 1st week of school it was time to celebrate Peter's Birthday.      The crew started out at White Mountain Mini Golf in Intervale.  It was impossible to keep score so they were all winners!  Special congratulations to everyone who got holes-in-ones!  I know of at least three.  Ian, Timmy & Andrew!            Then Water Balloon Wars in the back yard.  It sure takes a lot longer to fill them up than it takes to throw them.  But, everybody had a BLAST!         Since they were wet already, it wasn't hard to get them into the river for a swim. Last night hurricane Hanna dropped a couple of inches of rain on us, but this morning it was blue skies and by afternoon the river was almost swimable. John was king of the rocks and all the boys followed him up the ...

There are many ways to describe Jackson, New Hampshire: quaint, picturesque, stunning views!  They are all accurate.  Jackson sits just north of North Conway and Glen.  The drive itself is beautiful!  From the road-views of Mt. Washington to the topsy-turvy buildings of Storyland, you can bet that the town of Jackson will be a treat!  It is.  Complete with the obligatory white church steeples, the mountain vistas and the cutsey-antique-gift shops and of course, the famous falls, Jackson delivers what it promises!  A spectacular small town emboldened with natural and expansive beauty! Surprisingly, there are also farms...produce and animal farms!  And lots and lots of bed and breakfast inns.  Great restaurants and friendly folks!!!!

HEAT WAVE! "What Heat Wave?" What a great day to live in the White Mountains!  The air temperature was in the Low 90's and the water temperatures where over 70! I even presented a contract today on a nice little two bedroom condo in Bartlett listed for just $139,900!  A great deal even in this market.       The water in the Ellis River was perfect.  We saw some huge trout as we swam around.

The 1876 Jackson Honeymoon Covered BridgeI was out taking pictures of real estate in Jackson NH this morning and got this shot.  Well, yesterday I mentioned the famous "Honeymoon Bridge" in Jackson, NH so I thought I would share it with you today. Its unique feature is a sidewalk added in 1930 on the upstream side.  Lovers could stroll across the bridge stopping mid-way to admire the view to the North to Mount Washington and for a quick kiss.   The bridge has an exposed Paddleford truss design. It is just over 121 feet long and as many truckers have found out the hard way has a maximum vertical clearance of only 12'3". For more on Paddleford Truss click here: http://www.vermontbridges.com/paddle.htmBuilt in 1876 by Charles Austin Broughton and his son Frank. They lived on the East bank o...

A Cross Country Ski Through Jackson VillageYou can guess today was not a Real Estate day.  It was a "SNOW DAY"!This is not the famous Jackson Honeymoon Bridge, but the Wentworth Golf Course Bridge which is about 300 yards farther up the road.As you can see Jackson has plenty of snow for cross country skiing. We started out about 11am under beautiful clear skies with temperatures just above freezing.  Nobody was parked at the Mill Street parking lot.  At first I wondered why?  Then I realized it was quite a climb over the snow banks to get to the trail. No Problem, Up & Over!  "Hey! Who Got Me With Snow!"First we climb the Yodel Trail from the Jackson Cemetery to the Eagle Mountain House Fields. The Yodel has a nice easy climb and then a great down hill in both directions. The Eagle Mountai...
