First major snowfall of the season.  Last night and early this morning a heavy rain pounded the valley and through the clouds rising from the mountain peaks we saw the evidence of the first major snowfall of this season.       Of course it has snowed already in the high country, reports from people who hiked up to Williams Lake last weekend said they were able to scrape up enough of the white stuff to have a snowball fight. But this  snowfall was significant, reaching down the mountain to probably 10.000' and it's safe to say that it won't be going away until the runoff begins in the spring and early summer.  At lower elevations, and in the valley, it almost always snows before Halloween. And with it only a week away there's still the possibility that one day soon there will be ...

I was having one of those moments so please bear with me.  I was sitting in my office and thinking about Taos, where I live.  I just couldn't sit in the office a minute longer so I grabbed my camera and set out for a stroll around the Neighborhood. I started my walk around the block at LeDoux Street.  I could barely go a step without seeing a beautiful sight.  I just kept stopping and peering over walls or at shop entry ways.  There is a great story about the magical light in Taos, and all I had to do was step out of my office to experience the phenomenon.  Artists abound in Taos and my little stroll reinforced the reason so many come to Taos. I won't keep jabbering about the beauty and charm.  I will just let the photos speak the thousand words.                                         ...

Taos, New Mexico is Dog friendly! I have a really rather fabulous pound-hound named Daisy.  She is mostly golden retriever and the rest is a whole lot of love.  We live in an in-town neighborhood on a dead end street in Taos, New Mexico. Each morning when the weather permits, I take Ms. Daisy on a mile stroll around our neighborhood.  We visit with the two dogs across the street- a Bassett Hound and a Chihuahua, who live inside a fence.  Next door also reside two dogs.  They all like to sniff and bark greetings. We cruise up to the dead end and cross over a small bridge, where we meet up with Red Dog .  (Her real name is Maggie, but I didn't know that when we met her.)  She likes to come with us on our morning cruise. She also likes to meet me when I return from work each evening in cas...

Taos, New Mexico Parks. There are lots of public parks in Taos but the park that isclose to the Heart of Taos is Kit Carson Park.  It is named after, guess who?  Kit Carson the famous Scout who lived in Taos for many years.  He is buried in a small cemetery in the park itself.  Kit Carson Park is a beautiful Green spot with absolutely wonderful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  The park has three baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, lots of walking paths and is open to people and dogs. Taos Wool Festival is held here as is Taos Solar Festival.  The Wool Festival is a haven for weavers who display and sell their wares.  The Solar Fest is a three day event which features many famous musicians and also offers displays of solar technology.    Today, May 7, 20...

Around Taos Plaza and Bent Street.  I must admit that I went and bought a new "flip" camera which allows you to take simple videos and post them on the web.  Well, yesterday I just couldn't stay in the office for one more second because; we were having the first really lovely, warm day in a long time.  As an excuse, I went out with my cute little new video camera and shot short videos around Taos Plaza and on Bent Street. For those of you who have not been to Taos, the center of town is a large lovely Plaza.  The buildings around the Plaza are pueblo style (a style which is prevalent in town and one copied from the Taos Pueblo.)  The Plaza is a great place to stroll.  Many lovely shops showcase Art, and Jewelry.  The Open Space Gallery is an artist co-op where you can find Photography, ...

A Great Hike in Taos, New Mexico.  This is one of my favorite spring hikes around Taos.  It is a gorgeous and  easy wallk along the little Rio Grande Gorge and then to the confluence of the Rio Grande and Little Rio Grande Rivers.  This photo shows the start of the trail.   Next Photo is on the way down along the Little Rio Grande Gorge.  It really is a great Sunday hike.   The next photo is down by the Little Rio Grande which is roaring this time of year. Following along the Big water. Down at the confluence of the Little Rio Grande and The Rio Grande in Taos. The hike takes about 30-40 minutes to hike down to the confluence of the two rivers and about 45-50 minutes to climb back up to the Rim.  It is one of my favorite springtime hikes in Taos.  The trail head is at the end of State ...

Taos Spring is such a tease.  Two days ago it was sunny and warm.  I started putting all of my winter clothes away.  The tulips in my garden were starting to bloom (well at least one bloomed) The after winter mud season looked like it would be short, and I started to day dream about hiking, fishing, tennis etc.  But gee, I should know better, I have been in Taos for many springs. Last night I heard a tremendous crashing and banging.  I got up and looked out the window at my poor little tulip which was getting pelted with HAIL!  Yikes and Yuck.  After the hail came sleet and then rain.  This morning the mountains were so socked in that you couldn't tell that they were there.  Snow was on the ground and the wind is whipping around.  What happened to my springtime in Taos daydream? Well yo...

Knowing your credit score is very important when you are starting your real estate search.  Some small glitches in credit can make a steep drop in your credit scores.  The better your score, the better your chances of getting a great loan.  Many mortgage companies can work with you to get a plan in place to repair poor credit scores.  If you have a pre- approval letter from a lender, your chances of negotiating for a good deal on a home increase greatly. Sellers want to know that you can buy their property, and your loan pre approval is their assurance that you are a legit buyer.  Do the work now and you will really be in a great position to buy.

Here is my first attempt at posting before and after pictures for a house I am staging in Taos, New Mexico.  Forgive me as I learn.  I am having issues with the photo placement.  It would be good if one of you more experienced bloggers could give us some tips on making our photos standard.  Or is there a place on the site to read and learn about it?  Ok, here goes.  This is my second try.         I must admit this was a beautiful house even vacant but now it feels much warmer and inviting!

Here is a picture taken late evening from my home on Nighthawk Trail on the Mesa above Taos.  Again, this is a prime example of the "light" that attracts so many artists to the area.  Can you see the face on the mountain?  Rumor has it that if you can't see the face you won't make it here!!!  It is much more apparent in the winter when covered with snow, tho! Hint:  Look to the right and below the bald peak.

This condo has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and is withing walking distance to Taos Plaza, groceries and restaurants.  The grounds are lush and green in the summer and the tiered fountain adds to the formal charm of the courtyard garden.  This condo comes furnished (with some exceptions) so is perfect for your weekend getaway or ready to place in the rental pool!  Call me or contact me by e-mail for a showing! It is listed at $215,000.

The real estate market has decidely slowed here in beautiful, unique Taos, New Mexico.  I ran comps on sales today and was surprised at the low number building sites that have closed since January of this year.  With most of the speculation builders on hold I would expect this but would still think there were investors taking advantage of the slow market. What a great time to buy here and there is a lot of choice right now because the inventory of homes is high!  As I sit in my office at the main intersection in town I can watch the tourists wander around and stop to read our listings posted out front as they drink their coffee from World Cup Coffee next door.  The tourists seem to be here--the intersection and foot traffic is certainly high.  So if you haven't checked out our lovely co...

This beautiful new home in the Upper Las Colonias neighborhood near Taos, New Mexico was reduced today by $20,000 making the asking price 649,000 for 2750 sf with a heated finished garage! The Taos Garden Club will host their annual tour August 4. This is an event that I look forward to every year.  As a real estate broker I am fortunate to get to see lots of great houses and gardens throughout the whole year but it is always a treat to see the local homes that are selected to participate in this event.  It is always amazing to me to see what the gardeners can do in this high mountain desert setting.  This is the Taos event in which the general public can purchase a ticket for the self guided tour of some very special properties in the area.  Enjoy! Here the link for more information!http://www.GardenClubofTaos.com

When I first moved to Taos, New Mexico almost 10 years ago I was charmed by the adobe homes dotting the terrain.  There is so much romance in living in an adobe house.  Mud formed adobes are just so earthy, right?  I soon found out that there were several construction methods that produced an "adobe look" home.  Many were framed and stucco.  Some were pumice constructed and stucco.  Others were straw bale or or rastra, e-crete or rammed earth.  But all were charming to me with their flat roofs, kiva fireplaces and plastered interior walls.  Here are some pictures of the adobe (and faux adobe homes) that bask in our beautiful high desert terrain. Here's another!

Look at this small dome home in the Lower Las Colonias area of Taos.  I am delighted that Taos embraces and welcomes different styles of alternative construction! Find more info on dome home construction at http://www.Monolithic.com.  Several of these have been built in the area and from a distance they look like a setting from a science fiction movie.  There is even a dome doghouse! If you are interested in purchasing this property or one like it please e-mail me and I will send you the details.

Look at these beautiful copper shamen created by my neighbor and friend Michael Stiner. They stand bigger than lifesize in the grounds outside his home. These imposing pieces are made of pounded and oxidized copper with incredible detail and stand guard over our neighborhood in the vicinity of Blueberry Hill. Taos is an "artist community" and attracts many different artists working in different mediums.

Look at this great way to recycle bottles and cans in earthship construction. This is one way walls are built in the sustainable earthships around Taos.   There are whole communities of these "ships" out past the gorge.  Most are bermed with earth on one side and have many windows to capture the solar gain on the south side.Old tires rammed with earth are also used in these unique structures. Most have catchment systems for water and re-use the gray water from the sinks.  There is one open to the public if you are visiting in the area and want a first hand tour of these magnificent creations.
