With historic storms like Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm “Nemo,” taking aim at our Westchester County towns, it’s time to get covered.  For years, I paid very little in “contents insurance” for all of my clothes, furniture, SHOES (I’m a girl), chatchkes and ALL that I owned.  It was easy:  I just attached my Renter's Insurance policy to my car insurance for about $10 / month, with a great agent – like Allstate’s, Francesca Reilly.

That was years ago before Forrest and I owned a home together and then bought our recent "money pit," to share with my Father and Diana (stepmom) in Westchester.  We combined homes in this tough economy and while building our family owned, local business.

If you own your home, and have for 15 – 30 years or more, make sure that your mortgage company still has your policy in place.  You may need to put additional insurance on EVERYTHING in your home, including jewelry, art and all cabinetry, as well as all things nailed down or on a shelf. 

When we buy our homes, the mortgage companies often make us pay for a policy that protects them from fire or water emergencies to the STRUCTURE and none, if any, of our belongings are covered.  So, get yourself a great agent like Francesca, Joe, Jr. or Senior, and have them look at your current policy for a home you own or rent. 

It’s worth the time and it’s like taking that umbrella on a Monday morning, it won’t rain, but you’ll have it just in case!
