We all know what a handy resource Craigslist is for buyers and sellers, job seekers and potential employers, etc. I've used it for some time with very little problems, but recenty was the victim of a repeated attempt at rent scam, or possibly even identity theft.

I received numerous inquiries about a legitimate house for sale/lease purchase in a great subdivision near Columbus, Ohio. The scammers had taken my craigstlist ad, looked up the owner's name on our auditor's website, created an email address in the owner's name and was soliciting renters for $800-$1,000 less per month. Here are excerpts from the emails that were forwarded to me. They have a similar theme:

It's my great pleasure that you are interested in our lovely 4BR, 2bath home for rent. I am _____________ owner of this home, Actually we resided in this home before and presently we have packed out due to my transfer as a matter of my profession, where I work as a volunteer with Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability (ECFA),here is the site for more detail about why I am here in West Africa. (http://www.wycliffe.org) And my wife who is a missionary's dealing with Bible Translation and literacy worldwide.

We will be serving for a long term and now our home is locked up now and presently we have found a new home here which we will be staying for a very long term which might last 5 years in (West Africa,) and presently our lovely home is still available for rent for ($900) as first month rent and ($600)for deposit which includes the utilities ….. The money is not the main problem but i want you to keep it tidy always. I also want you to let me have trust in you as i have always stand on my word.

Of course, I informed the sellers of the attempts. If you suspect you're being victimized you can do the following: (1) drive by the property to check if there is a for sale sign and contact the realtor off the sign, (2) report it directly to Craigslist as a scam, (3) look on a paid website such as Realtor.com to verify the information (they take their info directly from our local MLS).
