Mac’s Drive In sits off the road a bit between Clemson and Pendleton SC. Its sign is permanently discolored by streaks of rust. Mac’s offers up a mixture of homemade hamburgers, beer-battered onion rings, milkshakes and conversation that has attracted locals, passersby and neighbors for two generations. Oh, and lots of sports on the several TVs and the radio ( Clemson sports of course). Harold McKeown, aka “Mac,” opened the restaurant along with Dan Gentry in 1956, shortly after graduating from Clemson University with a mechanical engineering degree. A trolley car that housed a former roadside business served as the drive-in’s first incarnation, until 1964, when the small, one-story, ranch-style brick building replaced it. Later, a wooden side deck was added to expand the seating beyond...

The first Clemson University Blue Cheese was cured in Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel in 1941. Since then, the homemade gourmet item has worked its way into the hearts and stomachs of an ever growing number of aficionados. The history and folklore surrounding this scenic spot in the Blue Ridge mountains is legendary in the Piedmont area of South Carolina. The name Stumphouse originated from the Indian Legend of Isaqueena. For more info on Stumphouse Tunnel visit my previous blog: Wordless Wednesday - Ever Been To Stumphouse Tunnel? Old Stone Church is located in Clemson, SC and was built in 1802. The church was constructed of field stone and mortar over the period from 1797 to 1802. It was a simple building with wooden pews and a pulpit. The Old Stone Church and Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. The church was built by Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens. Although the church is no longer in service, there is a cemetery on site that contains numerous old tombstones including those of Pickens and his family. I will have some photos for tomorrow of the cemetery. Here is a link to tomorrow's post which is about the cemetary: Speechless Sunday - Old Stone Church Cemetery in Clemson SC

Today after lunch, my husband and I visited a nearby park with a pond. There we saw huge Koi, several turtles, and a few ducks. The main attraction we saw however was this Blue Heron. He was obviously used to people being around because he let us get really close. The day was beautiful and sunny and a warm 92 degrees.. :)

Interesting news was just announced that the National Park Service has placed Clemson University’s Lee Hall/Lowry Hall complex on the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed in 1957-58 as the Structural Science Building, the building is considered by some to be a good example of modern architecture in the International Style. The building was designed by Harlan McClure. He was hired in 1955 to head the department of architecture, then in the College of Engineering. McClure (1916-2001) later became the first dean of architecture at Clemson. Under the leadership of McClure, Clemson's architecture program rose from obscurity to national prominence, and the Lee/Lowry complex was fundamental to that success.

Clemson University broke ground this past Friday on a $31 million project to expand and renovate Rudolph E. Lee Hall in Clemson, which is home of the university’s design, build and visual arts disciplines. The bulk of the project money will go to new construction, with the balance to renovate older parts of Lee Hall, including the original section constructed in 1958, according to the university. The 55,000-square-foot new building will stand at the south end of the existing structure, where its footprint is intended to be light, even as it speaks loudly of design and innovation. “We want a building that has some highly sustainable concepts in the design and a building that can teach students how a building comes together, how it exists in an environment and how it can even give back to...

Every year thousands of shooting stars amaze stargazers around the world.  You can have a special evening of wonder as learning about the Leonid meteor shower and the comet that started it all at the SC Botanical Gardens in Clemson on November 17th from 7 to 9PM. The dark skies provided by the new moon should provide excellent viewing conditions, but remember there are no guarantees.  Clemson University professors and curators will guide you in viewing with and without a telescope, counting and measuring meteors, as well as helping you understand what you're seeing.  Bring a notebook & pen, blankets or chairs, and dress for the weather!
