'Firewise' Landscaping In a previous blog, How 'Firewise'Is Your Home?,we addressed suggestions for 'Firewise' construction.  This is especially relevant in our area because the woodlands of our state, South Carolina are easily susceptible to fire fires.  But all areas of the country are susceptible to fires to one degree or another.  With the ongoing and devastating fires in the Myrtle Beach(Horry County) area of South Carolina, all home owners should learn and incorporate 'fireswise' practices.    Savannah Lakes Village in McCormick County has been designated as a 'Firewise' Community since 2006.  In the Architectural Expectations for new construction in Savannah Lakes Village, guidelines are given for ‘Firewise’ landscaping. They are as follows:    SUGGESTED FIREWISE LANDSCAPING CHEC...

Being 'Firewise' With the ongoing and devastating fires in the Myrtle Beach (Horry County) area of South Carolina, we are reminded of the need to be extra careful with any outside burning! This is expecially true in wooded areas. McCormick County is made up of primarily woodlands with much of our county acreage designated as Sumter National Forest, South Carolina Wildlife Management areas, and South Carolina State Parks. The woodlands are part of the charm of our area and provide wonderful resources. However for the sake of fire safety, Savannah Lakes Village in McCormick County has been designated as a 'Firewise' Community since 2006.  Being 'Firewise' in Savannah Lakes means not only understanding the potential of wildfire in our area but taking steps to limit the risk. Although we ha...

It's All about Family - Wednesday at the Masters! Wednesday morning at the Masters Golf Tournament was cold but sunny!  For those who don't know this area of Georgia and South Carolina, it is a short 45 minute ride from our home in Savannah Lakes Village in McCormick, SC to the Masters parking lot!  Thank goodness, Wednesday's wind was not gusting like it did on Monday and Tuesday.  By 1:00 pm, the day had warmed to a balmy 74 degrees for the Par 3 contest.  (Did you know that Augusta National has a Par 3 course adjacent to the regular course?)  In addition to all the famous young golfers of today, it was exciting to be there and actuall see Greg Norman's hole-in-one on #6 and watch from a few feet away as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player played hole #5!  What a day! Many g...

Are You a Golfer? What's Augusta National Like? Part 2 Drive into the public parking areas of Augusta National and it's hard not to be aware of ‘green.'  Everything you see is lush and green and manicured.  (Most home owners would be happy with grass as beautiful as in the parking lots at Augusta National.)  Most fans arrive early to walk the course and see the golfers - several times!  Many of the ‘big names' make early tee times for practice rounds so when the gates to the course open at 8:00 AM, the long lines have already formed.  Who would want to be late and miss a shot? Augusta National makes its rules very clear in the pre-tournament information.  Cell phones, electronics and beepers are strictly prohibited with the warning that breaking the rules means that you WILL be removed ...
