Go play in the yard!
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

Purple Pansies, Chattanooga local businesses, The Barn NurseryNow that it isn't like Dante's inferno quite so hot anymore, it's fall planting time. I for one, really like The Barn Nursery's tag line: Go play in the yard!

It's hard to miss 'The Barn' if you live in Chattanooga. Just in case you've never noticed, it's that big old mess o' plants just off I-24 at the 4th Ave exit. Makes for a nice view from the interstate if you're stuck in traffic going up the Ridge Cut.

Anyhoo...I mosey'd on over there a couple of days ago and picked up some pansies to go in my window boxes and some other stuff to replace the container plants that I gave up on the heat killed a few weeks ago. That big ol' sea of flowers was just too pretty so I took a couple of shots.

Enjoy the pictures, then make it a point to enjoy this gorgeous weather and go play in the yard!

Happy 100th Birthday Ferger Place!
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

Ferger place was the first gated community south of the Mason Dixson line. But it wasn't gated to keep intruders out, unless you consider wandering livestock to be 'intruders.' In 1910, Highland Park & Ferger Place were the 'burbs, farmland even, and the Ferger brothers weren't going to stand for any cows on Morningside or Eveningside Drives.

There are no worries about cattle roaming the neighborhood anymore and the gates have long since been taken down but the pillars remain, along with the private park for the benefit of the residents.

Help the residents of Ferger Place (along with a few descendants of those brothers Ferger) celebrate the historic neighborhood's 100th Anniversary tomorrow from 10am-5pm. Lots of activities and entertainment along with a few street vendors to keep the crowds fed.

Snow Day!
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

First things first, I owe the Hamilton County Department of Education an apology. This afternoon, when I got the come-get-your-kid robo-call, I *totally* rolled my eyes. Yeah, right, whatever! was my thought.

They were right, I was wrong. Ridgedale/Highland Park Chattanooga Real EstateSo I thought I'd take this opportunity to slip a little flask of vodka in my pocket (for warmth of course!) and take a walk around the neighborhood for some pictures. I live in the Highland Park/Ridgedale area between Missionary Ridge & downtown Chattanooga so seeing some of the quaint old cottages in the snow is a real treat.

OK, so that didn't really happen. What DID happen was I took a picture of the house across the street from me from my toasty warm library (yes, I have a room that I call "the library" - when you live in a hundred year old house you get to be pretentious like that) and then shamelessly used the photos from our last snow that Jason Kelley, a kindly Highland Park neighbor, posted to the local listserv (and graciously gave me permission to use).

Wouldn't you like to live here? Click to see what's available.

How's this for an adorable little punkin?
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

Two Little Punkins

The gourd looks pretty good too.

Nothing like carving a pumpkin with a kid who has no idea why you are doing it

"After"

Ignore the facial expression, there's no way that you could avoid enjoying something like carving punkins!

I think he was just disappointed that it wasn't going to turn into pumpkin bread.

His grandmother has spoiled him that way.

Happy Haunting!

Chattanooga Images: The National Cemetery
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

Sunrise at Chattanooga National Cemetery

The Chattanooga National Cemetery is a beautiful and awe inspiring place. Founded during the Civil War to bury the Union dead who were killed at the Battle for Chattanooga, it is the largest national cemetery in Tennessee.

Located on the edge of the Highland Park neighborhood at the corner of Bailey & Holtzclaw Avenues, this is a wonderful place to come to reflect on our nation's history, particularly in the quiet of sunrise, when this photo was taken.

Click here for more information about the cemetery and its history.

Highland Park/Ridgedale: Chattanooga's Historic Neighborhoods
Julia Odom, Chattanooga Homes for Sale (Select Realty Professionals)

Bounded by Holtzclaw and Willow, McCallie and Main, Highland Park surrounds Tennessee Temple University. Several Temple Alumni and home restorers have been fixing up these houses over the late 1990's and early 2000's.The bulk of the homes on Chamberlain and Duncan have been renovated, nearly as many on Bailey and Union have been restored. These homes command a premium price, particularly those with original historic details. The Highland Park Neighborhood Association sponsors a tour of homes each year. The neighborhoods of Highland Park, Ridgedale, Oak Grove, Orchard Knob & Bushtown are often collectively referred to by Chattanoogans as Highland Park.

Bordered by Willow, Missionary Ridge, McCallie & Main, Ridgedale was originally conceived as an addition to Highland Park but it has now evolved into its own individual neighborhood complete with its own neighborhood association. The residential area between Dodds Avenue, Missionary Ridge, Main & 23rd Streets are also part of Ridgedale.

Tentative plans for a new park at the border between Highland Park & Ridgedale neighborhoods are currently being considered.

Although the Victorian was the most popular design for much of Highland Park's building period, the Four Square and Bungalow designs are the hallmarks of the Highland Park neighborhood. Many homes share a Craftsman or what I call a"transitional Craftsman" style, meaning that there are Craftsman elements without necessarily having all the elements of a true Craftsman home.

The heyday of this area was between its original development in the late 1800's, early 1900's and the 1950's. Urban blight and the demographic move to the suburbs claimed the Highland Park area as a victim. Crime increased and many of the once proud homes were subdivided into multi-family rentals. In the early 1990's, as many Chattanoogans started to become aware of Chattanooga's rich architectural history, several Highland Park residents - most notably Ginnie Tatum - decided to take back their neighborhood and formed a neighborhood watch from which the Highland Park Neighborhood Association was born.

Ginnie Tatum recently passed away and while she may be gone, the work she began is certainly continuing with the addition of more and more renovated historical gems and a thriving neighborhood.
