The area once known as "North Hills" in Arlington now falls under Lee Heights.  The northern section is Donaldson Run, technically a stream, but referred to as a region.  The forests that surround Donaldson Run are protected and maintained by Arlington County.  They, along with Marymount University and the Washington Golf Club, offer a buffer from other neighborhoods.  Lee Heights is close to Ballston.

The market area is bounded on the north by Gulf Branch Stream, the east by the George Washington Parkway, the south by Lee Highway, and the west by Glebe Road.

Thirsty Bernie's is one of my favorite local restaurants.  Anyone who lives in North Arlington knows that there are not a ton of restaurants along Lee Hwy, and the few that are here are usually packed.   That is certainly the case with Thirsty Bernies on Monday and Tuesdays because they offer 1/2 priced burgers now on both nights.  See menu below for other specials, Wednesdays is wings night, Thursdays are 1/2 priced pretzels and ski chips (YUMMY chips with blue cheese, chives and some kind of sauce that is delish).    They are only not open for lunch on Mondays.

The wait is never too long and they will always welcome you with a drink while you wait.  This is a true neighborhood pub, with great food, great drinks and a friendly, home town atmosphere.  It's also right around the corner from McEnearney's Arlngton office, so I end up going there a LOT.  It's a great place to celebrate with clients too after a closing (see my latest happy family who just bought their first Arlington home).

What's a flat white - It's this yummy drink pictured below!  If you are out house hunting in North Arlington, especially in the Lee Heights or Cherrydale area, be sure to stop at Cassatt's to refuel.  Cassatt's is one of those understated treasures in North Arlington, Virginia.   Located in the Lee Heights Shopping Center on Old Dominion - I lived here for years before I tried it.    My lucky clients just closed on a house which is a short walk from here in the Lee Heights/Cherrydale neighborhood. 

They describe themselves as:  Cassatt's A Kiwi Cafe.  No they don't serve Kiwi's exclusively there, but are an authentic New Zealand style cafe and their specialty is the Flat White.  Which is a New Zealand version of a Cafe Latte - with less foam.  

Charming features of this cafe you don't find everywhere:

Coffee and Tea is served in adorable cups with saucers (see photo).

The only place around you can get a Flat White.

The main wall features art from local artists.

They have live music on Saturday nights.

The food is outstanding!  Yesterday I had a black bean and corn salad with grilled chicken and avocado.  Absolutely bursting with flavor, not drowning in dressing.

The servers are cheerful and friendly (if not incredibly prompt, but that's okay because they are sweet and the food rocks).
