Tammy, I've thought about a lot over the years and I do think that part of it is that we try so DAMN hard to be nice to people that when they back us into a corner and leave us no other option we struggle to go against our true nature. *This applies to RE only. Mess with my kids and I'll cut you quick.
I know there are times I've taken too much BS from people because I felt I had too much invested to NOT get paid. And the same goes for my kids. LOL that is a good mama thing.
Unfortunately with some people, respect is not an automatic thing. Trust me, I've seen it action.
I'm not sure what the youth are referring to but every human is to be accorded the respect of others and not attacked or belittled.
