Ron and Alexandra Seigel You and me both are having that reaction!! I haven't read the books, but NO ONE seems capable of understanding historic context anymore. That is terrifying - people try to ban "Huckleberry Finn" for having "nigger" in it, instead of actually reading the book and understanding that it is profoundly anti-racist, the "UNSPEAKABLE" story of a deep friendship between Huck Finn and a runaway slave. Mark Twain DEFIED the insult precisely by using it. The current trend to sanitize history, literature - it would be like trying to take any anti-Semitic slurs out of "The Merchant of Venice" without obliterating the fact that it is one of the most moving pleas for tolerance ever written - "If you prick us, do we not bleed?" A Jew demanding justice in the 1500s Catholic Italy. AAARRGH WHERE HAVE THE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS GONE??? Sorry, English Major, good college tantrum.
