google: The Number 1 Most Visited Website Is? - 06/01/10 12:47 AM
Come on, this is so easy ;) With more than half a billion unique visitors and more than half a trillion page views in April alone, Facebook (of course) tops the list of Google's "1000 most-visited sites on the web" list. Wow! The list is: "based on Unique Visitors (users), as measured by Ad Planner. This list is updated monthly as new Ad Planner datasets are released. The list defines sites as top-level domains. For each site on the list, you'll be able to see the site category, unique Visitors (users), page views and whether the site has ads."

google: Google Changes Name To Topeka - 04/01/10 03:52 AM
Effective today, Google, the largest search engine in the world, has changed it's name to Topeka: A permanent change? According to the Google Topeka blog yes. An April Fools prank? Of course but the story behind it is interesting. In February, Google announced they are considering building their own, super fast, Internet backbone. By 'backbone' I mean the physical wires all Internet traffic goes through. It's no secret that American Internet connection speeds lag behind many other countries and Google plan to do something about it. This came out just before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released it's own national broadband … (1 comments)

google: If You Dig Straight Down You'll Eventually Reach? - 02/09/10 01:32 AM
Online mapping options (normally powered by Google Maps) continue to amaze me and I just found another fun example on ubasics.com. As a child my dad always said that if I dug a hole in our yard I would eventually reach Australia. It seems he was wrong. Take a look at this simple but entertaining use of Google Maps to see the other side of the world from any starting place. It seems the opposite of my home town (Harlow, Essex) is South-East of New Zealand. If I had followed my dad's advice I would have got very wet! To see … (1 comments)

google: Google Social Search - 02/05/10 01:53 AM
The battle between Facebook and Google for your attention has taken another step forward with the release of Google 'Social Search'. Facebook's internal search is (and always has been) abysmal so Google doesn't really have much competition but don't count out Microsoft's involvement. With their investment in Facebook and push to make Bing.com the search engine of choice I wonder if their relatively new relationship will move from first to second base. Social search was initially announced last October; this informational video provides a quick overview: This is interesting but is missing real details. The following video provides them: Google's objective … (0 comments)

google: Google For Real Estate Professionals - 01/15/10 01:12 AM
I've just spent the last three days at RE Barcamp NYC and the Inman Connect Conference held in Times Square, NYC. One of the more interesting sessions was with Google's own Sam Sebastian who is their Director of Local & B2B (business to business) Markets. One of Brad Inman's observations was that despite the brand awareness of companies like Zillow and Trulia, Craigslist and Google top the list when it comes to online real estate activity and listing research. We've detailed all of the real estate benefits from Google before but a new one (to me) that Sebastian mentioned was "Google … (5 comments)

google: Online Mapping and Floor Plans Just Got Better - 11/30/09 12:21 AM
Whenever I look at online mapping solution providers I am amazed that so many companies seem to be able to make money off such a thin sliver of the property market. There's one other industry that seems to have lots of providers selling to a very small group of people; 3D floor plans. Then something comes along that makes me realize I'm wrong and there's always better ways to represent property more effectively online. Google SketchUp is their free (what else did you expect?) 3D modeling software that allows anyone to create a 3D model of anything. If it's a city, … (1 comments)

google: Google Wave - The Future of Online Communication? - 06/16/09 04:25 AM
Contributor: Stephen M. Fells Personally I have a love hate relationship with instant messenger. While I love that I can talk to someone anywhere in the world and get an answer to a question quickly (and for free) I hate that as soon as the conversation becomes at all, well, conversational the process becomes unbearable. As I sit there waiting on a response I soon reach the point where I realize I am wasting time which leads to me typing three words of frustration: "Just call me". Using technology for technology’s sake is not smart.

google: "They Said What About Me?!" Why Every Realtor Should Use Google Alerts - 06/15/09 11:40 PM
Contributor: Stephen M. Fells The change brought about by social media can easily be defined in one sentence: "Social media allows the little people to have a big voice" Initially led by blogging but now augmented by twitter and a host of other social tools all people are talking about all things. And you can't keep all the people happy all the time which means some of the commentary might not be particularly complimentary. If the negative statements are about a competitor then great! But what if it's about you? Sticking your fingers in your ears will only make matters worse, … (0 comments)
