real estate: the #!@%*! Blagojevic Burger - 01/07/09 07:57 AM
For those of you who thought that my last post, of the Senate Seat for sale was enough, and that Chicago was finished making fun of the state's governor... Sorry, but you were wrong.
Today, the Chicago Tribune reports that Kuma's Corner, a Northwest Chicago eatery has a new offering on it's menu.  The #!@%*! Blagojevic Burger (Also known as the Bleeping Blagojevic Burger).  This thing is a #!@%*! valuable hamburger, I mean it's #!@%*! golden!  They're not just #!@%*! giving these things away... in fact it cost $10.00 U.S.
Appropriately, Kuma's says the price on the hamburger is, of course, … (8 comments)

real estate: Invisible Humour - 01/07/09 06:08 AM
In keeping with my sad, sad pattern, of giving you short, easy to remember jokes, with which you can amuse your friends and neighbors (and by "amuse", I really mean "annoy"... and by friends and neighbors I mean "anyone who'll listen".)
I don't want to disappoint those of you who are waiting for the next installment.  Believe it or not, some of my subscribers have been asking when I will be publishing the next joke.  No really... I know.. I'm astonished, too... but hey, you can't buy taste.
Okay, mom subscriber, here's the latest installment:

real estate: Senate Seat, 50% off! - 01/06/09 07:38 AM
If you're gonna sell furniture in Illinois, this is an eyecatching (albeit irreverant) way to do it.  I'll be it catches a lot of attention... Don't know if that'll translate into sales.
And their Senate seat lasts longer than the average senate term, and seems to cost waaaaaaaay less than Rod was prepared to charge.  It appears more comfortable, too
What a bargain?!  50% off for a Senate Seat... I wonder if Roland Burris knows about this?

real estate: La dee dah dee dee, la de dah dee dahh.... - 01/05/09 07:37 AM
I just returned to the office from an appoinment...

One of the songs from my childhood came on the radio in the car, and it contained the lyrics (if you can truly call them lyrics):
La dee dah dee dee, la de dah dee dahh..
as part of the chorus...

If my memory serves me correctly, it's the only song I know that includes those lyrics. I know this is quite a challenge, without any audio (which I'm not going to provide, because it would be a dead give-away), but I'm wondering if any, many, … (17 comments)

real estate: I'm ready for my close up, Mr. DeMille - 01/05/09 01:10 AM

There's a local show, here in Chicago, that's kinda taken public television by storm.  It's called "Check Please", and it began quite unnoticed in 2001, but soon took off.  Today, we often check the Check Please website, before choosing a new restaurant... and I know that there have been spin-offs in other areas of the country as well.
The show is successful, because the concept is simple, straightforward and elegant.   Three normal Chicagoans, each week, would choose their favourite restaurants in the Greater Chicagoland area, and all three would review the restaurants, while sitting at a table, often drinking wine … (11 comments)

real estate: Images from Thailand - 01/04/09 03:15 AM
I promised some photos from my daughter's recent trip to Thailand...  she came home with over 600 photos... I'm not going to bore you with 600+ photos, but pulled some of the more interesting (in my opinion) images... and here they are.  Isn't the world strange and beautiful.  The king, as you'll see, is much revered.  He was born on a Monday... and Monday is assigned the colour "Yellow", and therefore yellow flags, banners and sashes are displayed everywhere to honour the King.  No other reason.
Enjoy.  I know I did.  And yes, I know I've included a couple of photos … (10 comments)

real estate: Empty Gift Cards - 01/03/09 02:39 AM
As a preschool teacher, my wife gets many gifts at the end of the year.  Among the many candles, soaps, "best teacher awards" and lotions, some of the gifts tend to be gift cards (in credit card format) to different local stores.  Gift cards are much appreciated, and they come in many forms... coffee shops, bath shops, movies, book stores...
Inevitably, she receives a gift card, that when presented to the store, turns out to be EMPTY.  It has no value associated with it. The store indicates that this card has never been activated.
I presume, that the empty card is … (29 comments)

real estate: Fail Whale - 01/02/09 01:23 PM
Isn't this so much better than saying "Red Hat Apache Proxy Server Failure"?
This is Twitter's version of Active Rain's "we're too busy, and the server can't keep up" message.
Can't you hear the elevator music playing in the background?
Brad... can't we come up with a similar "calming" logo when we get "backed up"?

real estate: return from Thailand - 01/02/09 02:14 AM
I'm sure that you've all been holding your breath, waiting for my daughter and son-in-law to return from Thailand.
Well, they returned, and everything is fine.  No trouble at the airport, no problems with the recent president's deposition.
They had a great time... the temperatures were in the 80-90's... (hot) and humid, and they were required to wear modest clothing when in public.  (for Sarah, shirts with sleeves, and long skirts (no jeans or shorts), no flip flops ... although sandals were okay.  And for Chris, long pants, and shirts collared shirts with some sleeve (like a polo)...
They were picked … (3 comments)

real estate: Mr. Zamboni would be proud. - 01/01/09 07:54 AM
This is a strange sight for those of us who live in Chicago. Wrigley Field has been turned into an ice skating Rink. If you ICE it, they will come...
Wrigley Baseball Field Stadium has been turned into an ice skating rink today for an unusual ice skating experience. I am curious to see how this will turn out. I don’t think anyone ever thought that we need an ice rink in the middle of Wrigley Field, but here we go anyway.
The original purpose was for a hockey game but the Wrigley Field Ballpark Ice Rink will also be made … (9 comments)

real estate: The Promise of a New Day - 01/01/09 03:34 AM
So... here it is... the auspicious beginnings of 2009.  Morning has broken, like a new dawning... All with the promise of a new day... and all that holds.
It doesn't look much different than 2008, thus far.  Still some snow on the ground, a bit overcast, and about 22° (this time ABOVE zero, thankfully).  I haven't, yet, broken any of my resolutions... this is good, with the new year only 11 hours old.  And yet, it could be a wonderful year.
The puppy is asleep at my feet, the wife is still asleep upstairs, and I am somewhat "brain dead" this … (15 comments)

real estate: Wordless Wednesday - 12/31/08 01:57 AM

I'm sorry... it's impossible to stay wordless on this one.  Speechless, maybe... but not wordless. The tag line is funny, 'cause it's true.  Governor F-Word is on his way, slowly, to learning how to make license plates by hand.  Rachel Maddow (a democratic pundit) said on her show... "covering Illinois is becoming as much fun as covering Alaska".... nice. (Land of Lincoln - ha!)

real estate: Lemon tree, very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet... - 12/30/08 09:07 AM
... but the fruit of the poor lemon, is impossible to eat.
For those of you who recognized the lyrics to Trini Lopez's legendary song "Lemon Tree"... man y'all are OLD!
My Friend-in-the-Rain, Charles Buell, was kind enough to name me a lemon... (a LEMON?!)... because his 10 favourite RainyDay people, here on AR are no longer speaking to him, due to all the MeMe's he's thrown around the pool... so he had to go to his second  third  next  some other tier, and chose me, as someone who he thought might entertain, enlighten and/or challenge you.
I think this makes … (18 comments)

real estate: Imagine all the laptops... it's easy if you try. - 12/30/08 06:22 AM
Okay, this is getting a bit too weird.
This has full approval from Yoko Ono... and while it's a good cause, it feels a bit hinky, dontcha think? A pitch from beyond the grave... laptops didn't even exist when he died... and the voice... it IS John Lennon's voice, cobbled together, digitally from interviews that he'd given over the years... listen carefully... it sounds a bit mechanical, and yet somehow comfortingly John.

real estate: Toxic Clients - the succubus of real estate - 12/30/08 01:38 AM
Greg Nino's post about his biggest regrets of 2008, promoted me to post about Toxic Clients.  You know who they are.
* You cringe when you see their name on your caller ID.* You let their call go to voicemail... and you're not busy* You know their call will be confrontational* You never have a five minute conversation with them... all calls exceed 50 minutes* You dread each meeting with them* They want to meet to talk about why their house isn't sold yet... "It's already been 3 weeks... what's up with that?"* They never follow your advice... their "uncle Sal … (4 comments)

real estate: Swimming Pool in the Basement - whoops. - 12/30/08 01:07 AM
The weather, here in Chicago, has been a little erratic recently.  Two weeks ago we were -6 degrees, with a wind chill of -25 degrees and had 18 inches of snow on the ground.  Last week, we crept up into the sixties, then rain, and all of the snow melted.  We have a bit of a split weather-personality going on here.  And now it's back into the 30's... weird, huh?
But the person, I think, who's the most disconcerted about it, is the owner of the home that an agent in our office showed this weekend.  It was a million dollar … (3 comments)

real estate: That's a nice shirt! - 12/29/08 02:18 AM
In keeping with my recent theme of "walks into a bar" jokes, here's my latest offering.

A guy walks into a bar and sits on a barstool, and orders a beer.  As the bartender is getting his drink, the man hears a small voice... "You look nice today".
He looks quickly around the bar, and there appears to be nobody around, but he and the bartender... and he's pretty sure the bartender didn't say it.  He shrugs it off, as the bartender returns with his beer, and he begins drinking.
Again, he hears that tiny voice... "That's a nice shirt!"... … (3 comments)

real estate: As the year winds down... - 12/29/08 12:52 AM
As 2008 winds to a close, this is the time to think about 2008's clients.  Make sure their files are all up to date.
Clean up your files, clean up your desk (in my case, see if I can FIND my desk)... get some fresh post-it signature arrows and post-it notes (I use a lot of those), some fresh CD-s, back up 2008's information from your Palm, Blackberry, Computer... all that stuff.
Hang onto a copy of your client's HUD-1, and send them a fresh copy as we approach Income Tax Day (maybe six weeks to eight weeks earlier)... your clients … (4 comments)

real estate: a duck walks into a bar - 12/28/08 04:21 AM
Okay, in keeping with my recent theme of "walks into a bar" jokes, here's my latest offering.  It's not quite as easy to remember but it's clean, and funny, when told right.

A duck waddles into a bar and hops on a stool. The bartender asks "What'll you have"?The duck says, (in his little duck voice) "Got any grapes?"The bartender, a little annoyed answers: "We don't have grapes here, we serve drinks."The duck hops off the stool and waddles out.
The next day, the same duck waddles into the same bar, hops on the same stool, looks the bartender … (15 comments)
