sandy ut: This week's earthquake events in the Intermountain West - 06/11/12 09:29 AM
This week's earthquake events in the Intermountain West
For those of you who follow the descriptions of my hobby of observing local seismic activity (Earthquakes, Mate!), you know my area of Interest is the Intermountain Corridor (Utah to Yellowstone), again this week fairly quiet with a mere 19 events , all under 2.0.
The usual map I provide is devoid of place names, so in the interests of  more explanation I have included two smaller area maps one to the north, the other to the south closer to my location of Sandy UT, each recording four events during the week. … (2 comments)

sandy ut: Spring changes in Utah - 04/10/12 08:49 AM

Spring changes in Utah A few days from a snow fall, and we are back to 78 F. Forecast shows a weather alert for the coming weekend - Rain and more snow. For the seasons to change, there are always adjustments before we reach a norm.
Signs of spring are everywhere, especially with trees and flowers. (Did our fruit trees blossom too soon?  Where are the bees? Do we have to put in a work order to get their attendance? Roadworks are evident ~ what do you mean sixteen blocks of State Street near me will be disrupted for … (4 comments)

sandy ut: Mild Winter for Sandy Utah - 03/06/12 07:12 AM
Mild Winter for Sandy Utah What a strange winter! Some snow on the hills, a few chill winds and the odd snow flurry in town.
Last year we could not turn the snow off - this year, the snow plow operators sit idle. With promises (unfulfilled mostly) of elusive storms, they become strangely active, showing their presence in Sandy streets, getting truly excited over a mere inch of snow if they can find it to play with.
With last week's dump, I had my moments on my electric scooter, bursting through dry powder, making my way to the Trax stations, and … (5 comments)

sandy ut: The Australian Flag in Sandy Utah - 01/27/12 06:13 AM
The Australian Flag in Sandy Utah Yesterday ~ January 26th, Australia Day~ the Australian Flag flew at my place in Sandy Utah, where for every US holiday the "Stars and Stripes" has pride of place.
My annual allowance of nostalgia in my Great American Adventure.
My mates in Australia celebrated Australia Day by being seared on both sides in summer heat - I had a backdrop of snow on the beautiful Wasatch Front. Same celebration, different global perspective.
In Utah, in the Salt Lake Valley, where I seem to be  the only person without an accent, I could enjoy the songs … (3 comments)

sandy ut: Hey, it's on again - 01/07/12 08:08 AM
Hey, it's on again After weeks of balmy, almost tropicality, wintery snow is falling in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. We are white and cool once again in Sandy with our overnight and continuing falls.
My truck is happy under it's little load of snow. Snow-blowers can now come out of garages and be put to use. Snow plows may even see some use after weeks of stealthy lurking.
We have been dry. December (driest ever) with one tenth of one inch of precipitation (snow), instead of 20+ inches, and following a warm start to January, with 40s and 50s, … (6 comments)

Fall Colors in Sandy UT Sandy UT is taking on its Fall mantle.
Not just Sandy but all around the Salt Lake Valley and throughout Utah,  the reds, oranges and yellows of Autumn brighten the landscape. The early snows of recent weeks have retreated to the higher peaks, but provide a beauty of their own, adding white to the color palette.
Combine these colors with beautiful skies and pleasant temperatures, and you have a place close to heaven.
We are in that … (11 comments)

sandy ut: It's been a great year - 10/08/11 10:12 AM
It's been a great year In a little quiet time I have realized that I have been blogging on ActiveRain for just over a year. In fact it was 10/04/10 that I reached tentatively into blogging after lurking for a while. What would the old and the bold think!
With 311 posts (2000 comments made/1984 received), and a growing list of readers, I am more involved than I could ever have dreamed (2/6/13 for city/county/state position).
Early encouragement  and criticism was extremely beneficial. I have learned so much about so many different parts of the United States and Canada, so much … (22 comments)

sandy ut: They said "snow at higher elevations" - 10/06/11 06:00 PM
They said "snow at higher elevations" What "they" failed to add was "snow at all other elevations (including my place) as well".
And how do they account for the sudden downward temperature variations from predictions as well. Sure felt like a cold front, even though we were not having one.
It was a chilly day up to the time the sun finally appeared in Sandy UT.
And then we were rewarded with the picture postcard appearance that makes our landscapes so delightful ~ perfect mountains of charcoal and white, top to bottom, against a perfect sky, east and west.
What's a … (11 comments)

sandy ut: We are in for a change. - 10/04/11 03:45 PM
We are in for a change. I have my sliding door open here in Sandy UT to enjoy the outside night air. In the last few minutes I have been listening to falling moisture. We started the day with (light) rain. This is certainly different to our norm in our high altitude desert location where rain is often recorded in drops per acre and our ten inches of rain is "ten drops ten inches apart".
National forecast maps allow us to anticipate rain all over Utah, with the TV versions being supported by the appropriate moving graphics. Often I can look … (5 comments)

sandy ut: Come to Sandy UT - 09/30/11 03:03 AM
Come to Sandy UT Over the 30 days of September, and at other times throughout the previous year. I have provided you with copious detail to educate you on the real Sandy UT.
Rather than Sandy being a dot on a map of a Mountain State, you may have become familiar with its landscape, its people and some of its purpose.
Sandy is a stand alone place offering peaceful living in an area of great potential. Modern city living is combined with space to spread and grow. Living here, we have it all.
You may consider me parochial and biased. I … (6 comments)

sandy ut: A week into Fall in Sandy UT - 09/29/11 12:19 PM
A week into Fall in Sandy UT Seven days of excessive warmth, and one might expect to see a delay in autumnal signs. Nature appears to be running to a clock rather than a weather map.
The mountains of the Wasatch Front (remember from earlier instruction: the big mountains are to the east) are tinged with red. A landscape artist might resort to a pencil for rendition of the red, and in a few places a fine brush ~ but the changes are there. Soon it will be worth the glory of a trip up the canyons (this weekend is probably … (4 comments)

sandy ut: Intermountain Corridor UT to Yellowstone Seismic Activity - 09/27/11 03:42 PM

Intermountain Corridor UT to Yellowstone Seismic Activity Yet another quiet week in earth moving activity in the Intermountain Corridor.
The map shows 21 earthquakes for the week from Southern Utah to north of Yellowstone.
Most of the events were between 1.5 and 2.0 ~ in the micro category.
Over the last month, activity has been relatively slight. I live at approximately the cross-over of the X drawn corner to corner on the map, in Sandy UT.
Events occur to the north and to the south at varying distances. Each week the pattern changes, suggesting that events might occur anywhere in … (4 comments)

sandy ut: Families assemble in Sandy UT - 09/26/11 03:07 PM
Families assemble in Sandy UT Monday evening in Sandy UT (in fact all over Utah) is fondly known by the majority of Utahns as Family Home Evening, a,without exception, gathering of the whole family for reflection, food, fun and games.
In my local area, my neighbors who are my age, recall family complements of eight children as being "average". In some cases they stopped counting at eight. With the larger families with older children, parking at the family home could become quite competitive, one car each (including Mom's) and a truck or two for general use, not even bothering with commercial … (7 comments)

sandy ut: An afternoon at the Southtowne Expo Center, Sandy UT - 09/25/11 01:56 PM
An afternoon at the Southtowne Expo Center, Sandy UT. Crossroads of the West Gun Show
In perfect weather, I made the trip overland in my three wheel scooter (a Rascal even) rather than take my van and spend more time searching for parking. It's only about a mile anyway. So my top speed works out at 5mph ~ perhaps downhill with the wind behind me.
I choose the dying hours of the Show as the press of the crowd is less, and I can get to see what I need to. The 2nd amendment is alive and well in Utah (after … (4 comments)

sandy ut: News Flash: Sandy UT proves to be a safe place to live. - 09/24/11 01:33 PM

News Flash: Sandy UT proves to be a safe place to live. Last evening saw the return of a selection of space junk.
After a fiery entry and a breakup into smaller pieces to ensure a shotgun effect the return of the debris proved to be a fizzer.
It missed us completely, all our citizenry, property and position were entirely untouched.
Local radio had reduced the odds of any specific person being hit from 1:21 trillion (haven't we heard of numbers of such magnitude in other fields recently) to 1:3000 of anyone getting hit.
Morning radio had the debris as … (3 comments)

sandy ut: Sandy UT has its own magic - 09/23/11 12:34 PM

Sandy UT has its own magic For a lot of this month (and before) I have been blogging on aspects of Sandy and its place in Utah. you have been introduced to civic happenings and a little of history of the place.
I live in Sandy (Historic Sandy is my neighborhood, a place of stories and beauty), great by choice or happenstance. I enjoy every bit of it.
I can tell you ever increasing things about Sandy; that would make you an armchair authority in time. It's now your turn to plan your visit.
You need to be here, to … (0 comments)

Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy UT 9266 S State St, SANDY UT, 84070
Rio Tinto Stadium is the home of Real (Ree - ahl) Salt Lake, a Major League Soccer Club.
The Stadium is described as a state of the art sports and entertainment facility. It was designed as a soccer-specific stadium, opened 10/09/08. It holds 20,008, all with excellent views of the pitch.
I live less than a half mile from the Stadium. On nights when Real Salt Lake is playing, traffic … (2 comments)

sandy ut: Effects of Summer - 09/15/11 11:54 AM

Effects of Summer Day heat tempering, vehicular relief, cooler nights, not as much dust in the breeze; all signs of approaching Fall.
Do I detect more energy? Or is it that the days are shorter?
Tell me roadworks are becoming fewer
This has been my sixth summer in Sandy UT, my home for my Great American Adventure. I have acclimated to dry heat at altitude, and like a tree, addied another ring to my weathered appearance.
Our warm, very dry summer will slide into a pleasant cool. Fall will come with its brilliant colors and the gradual disappearance of leaves … (4 comments)
