On May 11, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Shaun Donovan, announced to attendees of the National Association of REALTORS® Midyear conference that HUD will provide short-term bridge loans that will allow first-time home buyers to use the federal government's $8,000 tax credit as part of their down payment and closing costs.

The tax credit does not have to be repaid. The tax credit is equal to 10 percent of the home's purchase price up to a maximum of $8,000.
