quality of life: St Petersburg, Florida makes Yachting magazine's Best Yachting Towns list - 06/01/11 05:31 PM
St Petersburg Municipal Pier & Marina
St Petersburg is in the running for Yachting magazine’s Best Yachting Town! This is the first year for this contest and it has been narrowed down to 50 international semi-finalist cities. The magazine hopes to make this an annual competition.
There are 6 towns in Florida included on the list: St Petersburg, Fort Lauderdale, Islamorada, Key West, Punta Gorda and Stuart. It is interesting to me that the areas that I have lived over the years are all on the list. Maryland, where I grew up has 2 towns, Annapolis & Oxford. I lived in … (1 comments)

quality of life: New Seven Wonders of the World-They're Bigger and Better Than Before - 05/13/11 05:10 PM
I don’t know about you but I have a list of places that I REALLY must do my best to go see before I am too old. I have been slowly ticking them off my list quite by accident or luck or taking advantage of quirky opportunities as they arise. I haven’t put into place a “bucket list” that I must accomplish in a certain order-sometimes things just happen. Well, I can across this list on The Travel Channel.com site & was quite surprised to see that some of my list was on the new seven wonder of the world list. … (2 comments)

The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is often known for white beaches and a rich Mayan culture, but in the heart of the Yucatan rests its capital city Merida. Merida is recognized as the most secure place to live in Mexico and its residents are proud to keep this reputation strong. As a hub for expatriate activity, Merida has long been a real estate market for Canadians and Americans seeking a strong community and an authentic cultural lifestyle. In recent months, real estate in Merida is on the rise … (1 comments)

quality of life: Music, Moments and Memories - 04/30/11 06:37 AM
Music, moments & memories is what the program promises at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina this weekend. After a stormy start, literally tornadoes touched down 7 miles from here on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, the festival has more than lived up to its promise in the first 2 days. . Internet and phone service is still spotty but everyone is dealing with that happily. The storm passed taking all the humidity with it, leaving sparkling clear blues skies with temperatures in the 70's and music everywhere. The hundreds of volunteers, musicians, production crews and the local residents have all been so kind & willing … (0 comments)

quality of life: The New Merida Initiative – Making Yucatan a “Retirement Paradise” for U.S. Baby Boomers - 04/14/11 02:32 PM
from International Living   by Dan Prescher

Mexico's Yucatan state is a tropical paradise and a paradise for history and archeology buffs... but a retirement paradise for U.S. Baby Boomers?
Developing Yucatan into a Mecca for Americans 50 year of age and older was the action plan being discussed at a meeting of government officials, local entrepreneurs, and international consultants held in Merida, Yucatan, on Wednesday April 7 titled "Adults Over 50 - The Housing, Attention and Service Industry."
Coordinated by the Governor's Office of Finance and Development, the meeting brought together movers and shakers from around the state and the … (1 comments)

quality of life: Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Florida - 03/30/11 05:27 PM

Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg 3-27-2011 16
It was absolutely amazing to attend the events surrounding the Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg this past weekend. On Thursday, my business meeting downtown with clients just happened to end shortly before the night parade began. I thought that I might as well stay since most of the streets were blocked off for the parade & getting home would be a bit of hassle. The parade was followed by food, music, various vendors & fireworks. All of this was held throughout downtown along the waterfront parks. What a great way for the … (0 comments)

quality of life: The Healthiest Country in the World - 03/29/11 06:24 AM
Interesting article from International Living Magazine.    C'est la joie de vie! Maybe looking at life through rose colored wine glasses helps, after all.
The Healthiest Country in the WorldBy Eoin Bassett
The healthiest country in the world is France. That might surprise you about a country that places such an emphasis on delicious food, savory meat dishes, creamy sauces, delicate cakes, sweets and pastries, fine wines and barrel-aged brandy.
But the low cost of health insurance and the superb quality of care means France romps to victory in the health category of International Living's Quality of Life Index 2011.

quality of life: Irish Castle Vacations on the Cheap - 03/17/11 04:51 PM
Shoot! Maybe I should have celebrated St Patrick's Day in Ireland. This sounds so cool.  And then I could finally find my knight in shining armor, too.The following article was written by Steenie Harvey for International Living
Bare trees, a spectral moon behind scurrying clouds, mist skeins rising above Lough Meelagh. It's a winter night for comforts: a blazing fire, fine food, hot whiskeys...
If you fantasize about enjoying such comforts in an historic castle, now's the time to visit Ireland. Thanks to the recession, rates for heritage properties have plummeted.
My own Irish cottage is severely lacking in crystal chandeliers and suits of … (2 comments)

quality of life: The Greatest Acoustic Blues Americana Show on Earth! - 03/06/11 03:57 PM

Last night I drove the 5 minutes from my house to The Palladium Theater in downtown St Pete to enjoy an incredible evening of music. The Palladium Theater, built in 1925 in the Romanesque Revival style, as the First Church of Christ, Scientist, was filled to capacity. (In 1998 it became a theater for the Florida Orchestra with the original 1926 Skinner organ remaining in the building.)  A friend of mine, Roy Book Binder put the show together & also emceed it with great humor.  Not only were we treated to 4 hours of  incredible music & story telling but also a musical history of … (0 comments)

quality of life: Electric Vehicles:Myths vs. Reality - 03/01/11 02:57 PM
Yesterday several of us in the office were discussing electric cars partly because a dealership opened up next door to our office in January.  One side was convinced that electric vehicles were going to be worse for individuals because their electric bills would increase tremendously. The other side pointed out that the gasoline bills would decrease enough to make up for the increase in electrical bills. Some were concerned about the environment while others were only concerned with how it affected them personally & financially. I actually would love to be able to buy a solar & electric vehicle just to be-bop around town.  After all, I do … (2 comments)

quality of life: What Brings Three Top Chefs to Merida? - 02/22/11 03:58 PM
Diane Kennedy & Rick Bayless in the Yucatan? In Merida? Wow, I have known of them & their cookbooks since the early eighties. I own several well-loved & well stained copies of their books. You see, I read cookbooks like other people read novels.  I started cooking when I was about 7 years old & started working in restaurants during the summer at age 13. When I lived in California, I at one time owned over 300 cookbooks. Some of my most used & cherished books are Italian, Greek, Mexican & Native American cookbooks. And now, to find out the authors of some of my favorite … (0 comments)

quality of life: My Love Affair with Merida, Mexico - 02/15/11 04:53 PM
While visiting the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in October 2010, I was in heaven! For 11 days, I savored the people, the food, the music, the architecture & the climate-it is all so beautiful.
Catedral de Merida, Mexico 10-2010
In Merida, as a blonde woman, I immediately felt welcomed, comfortable & safe. Even though I was there on business, I was able to take in some of the wonderful sights & smells. I love how the ancient traditions blend with the modern daily life & technology. As I walked through the Plaza Grande, Mayan vendors sell basically the same delicious … (3 comments)
