ben bailey: More Photos from the Desert Southwest - 03/11/08 05:58 AM

The northern edge of the Sonoran Desert often has the reputation of being a barren place with very little to offer in terms of vegetation save for the famous saguaro cactus whose bloom is the state flower of Arizona.  Interestingly, with the rain that we have experienced down here this winter, we have seen all kinds of vegetation poking through including wild daisies which love to spring up on the hillsides.  This photo was taken from a moving car on the Carefree Highway, and doesn't do much justice to how beautiful the scene was, but shows just how green the desert can … (1 comments)

ben bailey: Sun Tzu's Art of War - Chapter 02: Waging War - 01/04/08 03:14 AM
Chapter two, Waging War, I think is a bit less abstract than chapter one, and as a result, likely easier to understand.  The comparative ease with which we can grasp the concepts laid out in chapter two should not diminish its importance within the framework of this book.
Chapter two draws a direct correllation between the costs involved with a campaign and the time that it takes to wage it.  Sun Tzu says from the start that a victory that takes too long will result in dulled weapons, dimmed spirits, and depleted resources.  How many of us have experienced any number of … (0 comments)

ben bailey: Sun Tzu's Art of War - Chapter 01: Laying Plans - 01/02/08 03:39 PM
Chapter one wastes no time in answering one of the most basic questions many people have when it comes AoW:  Why war?  Aside from being the "business" that his family was in, warfare is the ultimate metaphor separating life from death, and because survival is so important, careful consideration must be taken when planning war.  The same could certainly be said about either planning your business, or the way you go about planning your life.
