brian block: Houses Gettin' Sold Rap Video - 04/09/13 09:32 PM
Inventory of homes for sale is extremely tight in Northern Virginia - at last look there's just over 1 month supply of homes on the market.  Same goes for DC.  In fact, right now, much of the country is having a similar phenomenon in the local real estate markets.
I explain in the rap video below "Houses Gettin' Sold!"
This is the world premiere of the new hit rap video.
I didn't know I was a rapper and you probably didn't either, at least until I made this video.

brian block: What Happens if an Appraisal Comes in Low in Northern Virginia or D.C. - 03/14/13 08:04 AM
The real estate market has definitely been heating up in Northern Virginia and D.C. recently.  Open houses are swarming with potential buyers, homes are selling quickly.  At almost every home I showed to buyers this past weekend, there were other agents and their clients walking through the home as well.
When the market heats up, one issue that really comes into play is the effect of appraisals on sales.  When purchasing a home using mortgage finance, the mortgage lender requires an appraisal and will only lend based on the appraised value of the home.  If the home appraises at or … (0 comments)

brian block: Arlington Virginia Condo Inventory & Sales Report (February 2012) - 02/06/12 07:42 AM
The Arlington condo market is really hot!  Condos are selling throughout Arlington with multiple offers and the inventory is very low.  Here's some stats about Arlington Virginia condominium sales and inventory for February 2012.
Currently there are 207 condos on the market for sale in Arlington.  That may seem like a lot, but considering that 216 Arlington condos sold in the last 90 days, 207 is not that many...  54 sold in the last 30 days alone.  Based on the 90 day numbers, there's only about a 2.875 month inventory of Arlington condos.
The condos for sale in Arlington range in … (3 comments)

brian block: 5654 Clouds Mill Drive, Alexandria VA: Large 5 Bedroom House for Rent - 10/19/11 07:16 AM
Just last night I put this large home on the market for rent.  Literally put up the sign in the dark of night -- this time of year it sure gets dark earlier, doesn't it?  Nonetheless, some discerning renter is going to really enjoy this 5 bedroom home located just off Franconia Road in Alexandria and not far from the Franconia and Van Dorn metro stops.
Take a look below for details and photos:

brian block: The Story Continues to be the Lack of Housing Inventory in Northern Virginia: The Time to Sell is Now! - 10/18/11 10:29 AM
Forget what you hear or you've been told about the real estate market.  The facts in Northern Virginia are this:
1.  Homes are selling
2.  There's not that many homes available for sale
3.  Buyers want to live in Northern Virginia
Combine these 3 factors and you'll see that the time is ripe to sell your Northern Virginia home.
I reported on the low inventory of homes in Northern Virginia back in March of this year: LOW INVENTORY ALERT: It's Time to Sell Your Home in Northern Virginia!
The numbers in terms of the low supply of homes available for sale … (1 comments)

brian block: An Industry Leader: Brian Block Elected to the NVAR Board of Directors - 10/17/11 06:56 AM
I have some very exciting news to report.  I've been elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors for the Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS (NVAR)!  The results of the election were announced last Tuesday at the NVAR Convention.
Here's the official announcement: 2012 Board Election Results
Last Tuesday morning as I was about to head off to the NVAR Convention, I was surprised by a very touching gesture from my wife.  On the dashboard of my car, she'd secretly placed a chocolate truffle (YUM!) and a "Good Luck" card where she wrote "Good Luck in the NVAR Election.  … (7 comments)

brian block: Putting Together the Real Estate Pieces - 10/13/11 01:45 PM
There's a lot of moving parts when it comes to a real estate transaction in Northern Virginia.  There are contracts, addendums, inspections, appraisals, title searches, surveys, and a whole bunch of players.  At any stage, anything and everything can fall apart.  That's why it's crucial to hire an experienced REALTOR who can guide you through the sale whether you are buying or selling a home.  When you hire me, you're also getting a REALTOR who worked as a real estate attorney for several years and saw all the problems that could happen with a real estate deal in Northern Virginia.  After … (1 comments)

brian block: Flags on the Freeway - 09/11/11 01:10 AM
In the last week or so, as you drive up Route 395 through Alexandria, into Arlington, and into D.C., you will see something that you do not see every day.  It's on the overpasses.  Almost every one.
A show of patriotism.
A show of solidarity.
A sign of resolve.
A solemn reminder.
Flags on the Freeway:

In the days leading up to today, the 10 year anniversary (I wish there were a better word, since anniversary connotes celebration) of the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, American flags have been popping up on the overpasses, especially on the … (10 comments)

brian block: A Sign of the Times - 08/29/11 11:53 AM
You've seen them.  I've seen them.  We've all seen them.  Those silly, some would say cheesy, signs that hang below the main For Sale sign on a post in front of a home.  In the industry, they're called riders.  You know what I'm talking about... signs that declare:
"I'm Gorgeous Inside!"
or these two below:

Tell the truth: when's the last time you actually screamed out (note the exclamation mark), "Honey... Stop the Car!"?  Maybe to avoid hitting a deer, but certainly not to go see a home for sale in Northern Virginia or anywhere else for that matter.
When … (11 comments)

Channeling the late, great, Notorious B.I.G., this past week, I've got Mo Media Mo Advice for homebuyers -- this time in a nationally syndicated article appearing on  As you may recall as I reported last month in The Quoteworthy Real Estate Broker, I've gotten more than my fair share on local and national news coverage for my opinions and advice regarding real estate.  Take a peek at "Brian's Press Page" to view all the articles in local and national media outlets as well as watch clips of my television appearances.

brian block: The Quoteworthy Real Estate Broker - 06/25/11 03:18 PM
Not once, but twice in this past week, the media came my way asking for information about the real estate market. Not to toot my own horn (okay, I am tooting my own horn, but sometimes it is warranted), but this has become a regular occurrence over the last several years. Take a look at my Press Page to view all the articles in local and national media outlets as well as watch clips of my television appearances.
Last week, I was interviewed in person by Nicholas (Nick) Horrock at my office. He's now a reporter with the Connection Newspapers, a … (25 comments)

brian block: How Do They Afford Those Big Homes? - 06/20/11 03:15 AM
The two real estate offices that I manage are located in Arlington and McLean, Virginia, two quite wealthy suburbs of Washington D.C.  When working with buyers in Northern Virginia, no matter what price range we're looking in, we inevitably drive past some very large, very expensive homes.  After all, in McLean, over 2/3 of the homes on the market are priced at over $1 million.  If you drive just down the street to Great Falls, Virginia, most of the large homes are on some acreage -- often 3-5 acres or more
A lot of clients will ask me: "How do 'they' … (6 comments)

brian block: The Future of Online Real Estate - 02/22/11 08:34 AM
You might not be able to type on your laptop keyboard and produce the results in this video when it comes to online real estate... yet...
Watch our new video above!  The facts are that more and more of you are searching for real estate online, viewing listings, looking at maps, researching homes, reading blog articles, getting comparisons of neighborhoods, watching videos, and comparing prices of Northern Virginia homes.
Despite all this, when it comes time to buy or sell your home in Northern Virginia or Washington D.C., you will meet with me (or God-forbid another REALTOR) face to face, … (2 comments)

brian block: I've Graduated Once Again: NVAR Leadership Institute - 01/13/11 03:26 PM
Just over one year ago, I opened up the envelope and read:
"Congratulations!  You have been selected as one of thirteen REALTORS to participate in the NVAR Leadership Institute"

Last week, I graduated from the program.

The picture may be a little fuzzy.  In case you can't tell, I'm the good looking guy with the pink shirt and pink tie, third from the right.
Throughout 2010, I participated in 12 different sessions, the highlights of which were the following:
a bus trip to Richmond, Virginia to meet with members of the Virginia State Legislature and see the General Assembly … (8 comments)
