northern virginia real estate b: If You're Smart (or not so smart but have a college degree), You'll Be at Home in Northern Virginia - 07/15/10 11:10 AM
Hey Smarty Pants!
Do you think you're smart?  Let's call it educated since that's what we're really talking about since after all you can be educated and have some letters after your name and a diploma on your wall but not necessarily have smarts.
Anyways, if you have a college degree, you'll fit right in here in Northern Virginia.
I already knew that Washington is the nation's best-educated metropolitan area, both in terms of bachelor's and graduate degrees.  See my 2007 post, It's the Smart Move: Greater Washington D.C. has the Most Educated Populace in the Country

northern virginia real estate b: They're Coming to D.C.! - 06/21/10 01:23 AM
Forbes has an interesting interactive mapping tool that lets you see how many people are moving in or out of any county or area of the country.  I stumbled upon this or rather was directed here by Lani Rosales of Agent Genius magazine.
The site provides a map of the United States and then allows you to click on any county.  It will then display a series of black and red lines of various thicknesses.  Black means net inward migration to an area and red means net outward migration from an area.
If you hover on any of the highlighted counties, … (38 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: The Housing Bust is Essentially Over? - 03/15/10 10:19 AM
It can be dangerous listening to the Talking Heads.

No, not the "Psycho Killer/Burning Down the House" Talking Heads, but the small "t" small "h" talking heads that make major pronouncements about real estate and the condition of the market, predictions, etc.  If you don't know which economist to trust, you can end up having 5 different opinions from 5 different economists, all who believe they know what's going to happen with real estate.

I always believe that it's better for you to listen to someone who's out there in the field every day, "playing in the street", and … (14 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: Are You Buying an "As Is" Home? Buyer Be Very Aware! - 02/26/10 09:12 AM
Caveat Emptor -- that's Latin for "buyer beware."
In today's real estate market, with the prevalence of foreclosures and short sales, I would caution that this phrase should read differently.  Since I don't speak Latin nor know anybody else who does (even though I graduated from law school and there are even more Latin terms in law than there are in real estate), I'll write it in English.
Today's phrase is:
BUYER BE VERY AWARE!
When you're buying a home, unless it's from a friend or family member, it is very unlikely that you know the seller of the home.  However, … (51 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: Busy as a Beaver: I've Met the Culprits in Cameron Station - 01/15/10 07:09 AM
If you've ever spent a Spring day walking around Ben Brenman Park, the large park adjacent to the Cameron Station neighborhood in Alexandria, you've definitely delighted in the beautiful cherry trees around the lake.

Well, according to the Alexandria Gazette Packet, those cherry trees are going to be a little less colorful this year.
Seems that "a pack of beavers has been munching on the trunks of Yoshino trees there."  The paper reports that "[c]ity arborists have removed about 40 Yoshino cherry trees in the last two months in the wake of the all-you-can-eat beaver buffet."
It was a coincidence … (6 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: The First 100 Days -- The First 100 Houses - 06/27/09 01:05 AM
Earlier this week I realized that I just completed my first 100 days as a Managing Broker.
It was met with slightly less fanfare and around the clock cable news coverage than the "First 100 Days of the Obama Presidency."
Just slightly!
Recognizing this milestone while driving home on Tuesday evening, I sent out an e-mail to the agents in my McLean, Virginia  RE/MAX Allegiance office:
"While driving home this evening, I realized that it's now been exactly 100         days since I've had the honor and pleasure of being the Broker at the         McLean office.          So … (19 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: Let's Work Together to Help Millions of Kids - 03/14/09 03:21 AM
There are so many wonderful charities that do great work to help those that are not blessed with all of the advantages of life that you and I enjoy.  Whether you decide to donate time and money, they are a multitude of organizations that can use your help.  The needs of charity are even greater today during a tough economic time when many more people have less and less to give.
I'm a big proponent of charity.  You can read more about my charitable efforts here: Giving Back to the Community -- More Than Just Money.  Recently our real estate brokerage, … (7 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: Inauguration Mess -- I'm Skipping Town! - 01/08/09 12:09 AM
Inauguration Week is less than 2 weeks away.  For people who supported Barack Obama, January 20th will bring exhiliration, excitement and optimism.  For those who voted for McCain/Palin, this month's Inauguration will likely bring about different feelings.

For anyone who lives in the D.C. area, one thing is for certain, Inauguration Week will bring frustration, confusion, and traffic jams!

Top and center, today's Washington Times reported that for security measures, the Secret Service made the unprecedented announcement that they will shut down all bridges crossing from Virginia into the District of Columbia and establish a "security perimeter that closes … (15 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: BECOME A HOME INSPECTOR FOR JUST $49! WHAT? - 12/27/08 12:02 AM
The highlighted message screamed out to me today from the classified ad section in the back of Popular Mechanics.  My wife purchased this subscription for me in an attempt to raise my home handiness quotient.  You see, except for the simple lightbulb change, most repairs around the house require a call to our trusted handyman.
Among the ads for various do-it-yourself projects, machine tools, and business opportunities, was this beauty:

I don't know about you, but I don't want a $49 home inspector scrutinizing the biggest investment of my life.  Will that … (19 comments)

northern virginia real estate b: Stairs! - 10/03/08 02:10 PM
Has walking up and down stairs in your townhouse or home got you down? (okay, you can at least chuckle)

Whether you're young or old, have a stride like Usain Bolt, or praise the invention of the t.v. remote control, stairs can sometimes become a nuisance.
Especially in townhouses, where it is necessary to go up and down, up and down, just to carry out your daily life.
What are your options?
You can buy a Rambler.
How about a condo in Alexandria or Arlington?
There's even a few townhouses available with elevators -- though you'll pay a pretty … (13 comments)
