Localism Challenge, Day #30:  13-time National Champion Crimson Tide goes Gator-huntin'
This was a struggle... but I've made it to the end of the Localism Challenge.
I've written about restaurants, written about folks facing challenges tougher than many will ever know, and I've written about opportunities and events where folks may give back to their communities and help their fellow man.
But today?  This last post celebrates something a bit different- as Head Coach Nick Saban is just up the road and getting my 13-time National Champion … (0 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #27: Homes For Our Troops - 09/27/11 05:22 PM
Localism Challenge, Day #27: Homes For Our Troops
We can't ever do enough for our troops- period. Whether American soldier, sailor, airman or Marine, the young men and women serving, fighting- and sometimes dying- for us is the best and bravest the world has ever seen. Repeated, the folks our president sends into harm's way every day are the best to ever trod Earth's soil.
Seldom is the time, though, when these young men and women return home unchanged by their travels. Some bear mental scars that don't form scabs and never show clear indications of healing, while some bear outward signs of … (4 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #21:  Inventory's shrinking, prices rising- it's time to make your move
A recent column from the Orlando Sentinel's Mary Shanklin points out some encouraging signs for our local real estate market here in Orlando.  Schools are open- and Economics 101 is in session:  inventory is shrinking and prices are rising.
When the median sales price in July exceeded the previous year's median by 6 percent, it was the first time in four years that the local housing market had managed a year-over-year gain … (2 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #20: Sonny's Family Nights at "The Rep" - 09/20/11 10:31 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #20:  Sonny's Family Nights at "The Rep"   This weekend brings the first of this year's Sonny's Family Nights at "The Rep"- a series of a few plays held downtown at The Orlando Repertory Theatre, affectionately known as "The Rep".   These are excellent opportunities for families to spend a few hours of quality time together- and enjoy some quality entertainment and a meal.   It's a crazed and crazy world that we live in- where up seems down, down seems up, and there just don't seem to be too many "family" activities anymore.  Thank you, Steve Jobs... … (0 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #19: 2011 Orangewood Community Family Fun Day - 09/19/11 11:02 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #19:  2011 Orangewood Community Family Fun Day It's hard to believe it's time for Orangewood's Community Family Fun Day again...
Last school year flew by, as did the one before and the one before- summer's done and school's rockin' and rollin'
Orangewood's Community Family Fun Day is great in a number of ways:
- It's fun
- It raises money for the school, which means less money in direct payments from parents.  When a quality Christian education is costing you an easy $10,000/year these days, every little bit helps.
- It provides service opportunities for students that gain … (2 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #18: Women of Worth - 09/18/11 08:14 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #18:  Women of Worth
The following is some information about an upcoming conference at my church here in the Orlando area (Aloma is actually in Winter Park).  It's an event I won't be attending, though- for the W.O.W. (Women of Worth) Conference is for the ladies.
Folks may read this post and say "Dang.  He seems kind of 'churchy'"- and that's fine.  Today's Sunday, and I didn't leave church that long ago- so it's cool to still be "churchy".  And if some don't like that...too bad.
Folks may read this post and say "Dang.  He's not a woman- … (0 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #17: Seminole County 2011 Teen Read Contest - 09/17/11 06:22 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #17:  Seminole County 2011 Teen Read Contest
The following is a link to a flier I ran across a bit ago, announcing the Seminole County Public Library's 2011 Teen Read Contest.
This particular contest isn't what you'd first think- kid reads book, kid tells about book, etc.  It's actually more or a writing and video production contest that's geared toward having teens urge other teens to read.  And that's a good thing.
I always say that you're going to set an example every moment of your life- it's up to you to decide what kind of example.  Is … (4 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #16: Osceola County, Florida's declining inventory - 09/16/11 10:00 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #16: Osceola County, Florida's declining inventory
Osceola County is one of the 6 counties that comprise the Orlando/I-4 corridor.  Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Polk, Lake and closest to Orlando, then Volusia a bit towards Daytona where I've actually managed a property as well.  Some folks might even add in Brevard County to the East as a 7th county they service.
Osceola has had a huge number of empty properties that have been nothing but blights on their community- with tons of bank-owned places sitting with knee-high grass and pools some funky shade of brown that Crayola doesn't even make.

Localism Challenge, Day #15: Clown School for the elderly

I've gotten a few days behind in reading the paper, so it's a bit of a last-minute thing if you want to get in on these classes at the Marks Street Senior Recreation Complex.

Yes, it's Clown School at the old folks' place.

I don't know..the good Lord may very well slap me up-side the head sometime down the road, but the thought of elderly folks in clown school is just hilarious to me.

I'm a fairly able-bodied guy and all, and I can't sit and make any dang … (0 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #14:  Helping heroes' families cope

Stress is a tough thing.  It's gnaws at you and gnaws at you- and if you don't address it properly, stress kills.
Though I may show a hint of partiality towards one of our armed services...I also have family members that have served in the Air Force, Army and Marine Corps.  Stress is a common thread that runs between members of all services- and a thread that reaches every member of their families as well.
From time to time, the Orlando … (0 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #13: Orlando Market Report September, 2011

Localism Challenge, Day #13: Orlando Market Report September, 2011
The graph that keep sticking out in folks' minds here is the one showing our inventory going nowhere but down- and at a rapid clip to boot.
10,000 on the market today vs. roughly 16,000 at this time last year?  That's one heck of a drop rate- and one that's gonna be tough to sustain.
It's just my humble opinion, but I think it might be time to start thinking about the shadows once again.  The Boogeyman might not exist, they … (2 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #12: It's almost Zellwood Sweet Corn time- opening 9/17/11!
Yes, it's almost sweet corn time.... If you're not from around these parts (like me), you're probably thinking "What the heck is sweet corn?" (as I did the first year I lived down this way).  Simply put- you got it- it's some corn that's sweet.  Once you've had some, the next question you'll be asking is "Where the heck can I get some of this sweet corn?" (as I did).  Here's your answer...from the only place you … (0 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #11:  Social Media Seminar 9/14 and 9/15
There really aren't a great deal of Orlando Sentinel things I support.  They're a liberal paper that's the only show in town- and they've recently gone the way of raising their prices and cutting staff- while at the same time reducing content.
I think this event is of great value, though.  Most of us (and our clients) would be better served if we knew a bit more about SEO and how it works...
SEO can help us launch our business from the ground up
SEO can help us grow and nourish … (2 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #10: Rock the Universe - 09/10/11 08:06 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #10:  Rock the Universe
Yesterday, it was Disney's Night of Joy, but today I highlight and salute Universal Orlando's Rock the Universe.  Event information may be found by following this short (insert eye roll here) link:
http://www.universalorlando.com/Events/Rock_The_Universe/live_concerts.aspx?ComponentId=20124&SourcePageId=20598#page=Events_Rock-The-Universe_2011.html&expID=13-13468&contentID=13-20597&seq=2
I don't know why these events are being held on the same weekend- I really don't.  I'd like to think that this was by strange coincidence or due to there being no real alternative weekend at the places, etc.- there are precious little of these large-scale Christian events- and forcing folks to choose between them is somewhat unfair.
Whatever your choice … (0 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #5: Delintz Dryer Vent Cleaning Service- Serving the Greater Orlando Area 407-522-1666 - 09/09/11 06:52 AM
Localism Challenge, Day #5 (UPDATED 9/9/11):  Delintz Dryer Vent Cleaning Service- Serving the Greater Orlando Area, 407-522-1666Yes, this is a big picture...but I hope it goes a long way towards increasing awareness of this big problem. By the way- this is a photo I took myself. A tenant of mine left a property like this, and it's easy to see the problem. This vent came loose a while back and was never re-attached- so all of the lint went...well, you can see where it went.
Now, imagine taking a match to it....

OK- I have to admit it: At first, I … (8 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #4: Seminole County Public Library, West Branch, 245 N. Hunt Club Rd., Longwood, FL  32779, 407-665-1670

Seminole County Public Libraries are open:
Monday-Thursday:  9-8
Saturday:  10-5
Sunday:  1-5
Yes, I'm doing it- a post about a library.  There are many like it, but this one is mine...or at least the one that just happens to be the one closest to my home.  Folks that have viewed my posts for a while may have seen them listed under "Apopka", "Orlando", "Orange County", "Seminole County", "Mid-Florida", etc (and they're all true), but I live in Seminole County and … (0 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #3: Farewell, Scott Harris - 09/03/11 04:28 PM
Localism Challenge, Day #3: Farewell, Scott Harris
I moved to Orlando a few years ago.  When I moved, I only really knew a handful of folks here.  I didn't know who I'd be working with, didn't know my neighbors, didn't know where to find a lot of places.
I didn't know the area's TV stations, either.  One I found very quickly was Central Florida News 13, which is an odd kind of deal, really- in that our cable company runs the thing.  At any rate, next task was to find where all of the other channels in the cable lineup fell- so that … (6 comments)

30 day challenge: Localism Challenge, Day #1: ALOMA CHURCH (Winter Park, FL) offers SPIRITUAL PEACE and FINANCIAL PEACE - 09/01/11 04:53 PM
Localism Challenge, Day #1: ALOMA CHURCH (Winter Park, FL) offers SPIRITUAL PEACE and FINANCIAL PEACE
I first set foot in ALOMA CHURCH in the Fall of 2006, and witnessed (no pun intended) a somewhat fiery preacher by the name of Pastor Anthony George give one of many sermons I've seen him preach. Other churches may have more members than Aloma's, but I dare to be bold in saying that other churches should be jealous of us at Aloma- for each Sunday we're blessed to receive The Gospel from one true man of God.
We have 3 Baptist worship services on Sunday mornings, where … (2 comments)

Day #31:  30 Day Challenge, Music-Style...Ziggy Stardust and a wrap-up
Day #31?  Yes, it's true- a 30 Day Challenge with a Day #31.  I've gone with this extra day to both finish out the alphabet with the letter Z and offer a list of my 30 days of songs (in the unlikely event that someone in the world would care, that is).
Ha!  Get this...I just found out from Kerrie on the ActiveRain staff that I'm not really doing any 30 Day Challenge after all.  My goofy self just thought folks did the bloggin' and the point was to go 30 … (0 comments)

Day #30:  30 Day Challenge, Music-Style...The River
My 30 Day Challenge wraps up today, as I move to the alphabet's letter Y.  I really haven't decided what I want to do next, though.  I have a few posts left- I'll finish the alphabet with the letter Z tomorrow, list all of my days' posts as a "greatest hits"-type deal.  I'll offer a few "misses" that are other favorite songs and lyrics of mine- but don't know where I'll go after that.  We'll see.
The song and lyrics I've chosen for today are near and dear to my heart.  Today, I salute … (0 comments)
