Merry Christmas and God Bless...our cops

Merry Christmas and God Bless...our cops

Merry Christmas to you and yours!  My hope for all is that you've had time to reflect on 2014: determining what went well so you can repeat it in 2015, and assessing what went wrong so that you can change it and ensure the coming new year will not only be better than 2014- but your most prosperous year ever.

My prayer is that today and every day, you'll have time to pause and celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  May all of … (2 comments)

dennisburgess: A Race Relations Revolution? Not quite necessary. - 12/08/14 05:43 PM
A Race Relations Revolution?  Not quite necessary.

A Race Relations Revolution?  Not quite necessary.

Recently, Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson penned a column (here: http://klou.tt/thiwom1lftxj) expressing his idea that America needs to "revolutionize" race relations (his words).  While Mr. Tyson does make a few good points, he also proffers for consideration a few points, characterizations and commentary on inevitabilities with which I must respectfully disagree.  "Revolutionize" race relations?  Whether Mr. Tyson wrote solely in response to recent events in Ferguson, New York or nearby Sanford or seizing an opportunity to write about some long-held beliefs, I … (0 comments)

Just a hint of inspiration...

Just a hint of inspiration...     Toward the end of this Thanksgiving Day, I offer a rare 2nd post for the holiday.  That's no reflection of any sort of greatness on my part, mind you- as typing away on this thing requires no real valor or courage.     The subject in the video above is another story, however.     For those not familiar with his story, Marcus Luttrell is a true war hero.  As the recent movie Lone Survivor chronicled, he was a member of the U.S. Navy's SEAL Team 10.  Luttrell … (0 comments)

Thanksgiving 2014

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name"- Psalm 100:4 (KJV)

On this Thanksgiving Day and every day, let us give thanks unto the Lord- for He will provide.

We're all different- occupying many different positions in life.  Some of us have soared to heights once beyond our wildest imaginations- while others among us may have fallen to depths which also seemed beyond our wildest and more tragic imaginations.  Today, one and all should give thanks equally- for God knows … (6 comments)

The importance of first impressions

http://www.inman.com/next/5-key-elements-of-a-brilliant-first-impression/

The author here does a great job of making the case for 5 small steps that can play a big part in making a first impression.  While this is from Inman and more/less geared toward Realtors, the premise holds true in pretty much any of our relationships.  I'd add a few things:

1) Be on time.  I hate it when don't really like it when folks are late for an appointment with me- just don't like it.  I could probably work on my tolerance in that … (4 comments)

I've never been an L.A. Dodgers fan.  Growing up in Alabama, one tends to gravitate toward the Atlanta Braves- and I did for the most part as I cheered them on through a number of poor seasons where being able to watch a true professional in Dale Murphy was each year's saving grace.

That said, I've never been a Clayton Kershaw fan, either- until yesterday. Kershaw was awarded his 3rd National League Cy Young Award yesterday- alone a rare … (4 comments)

Veterans Day 2014

Veterans Day 2014

This day- and indeed, every day, I pause to remember my fellow veterans.

I remember those who have gone before me- ones who defeated Marxism, Communism and Fascism.  I remember those buried under Arlington's white headstones- most identified, some not.

I remember those who served in Korea and Viet Nam- both the ones who returned home to nothing resembling a heroes' welcome, and those who have never returned at all.  We remain vigilant and anticipate their return.

I remember a great number of friends I had the … (5 comments)

Realtorin' With Narcolepsy...

Over the past few years, a number of folks have asked me about my narcolepsy- "What is it?", "How does it affect you?", "How does it impact your everyday life?", etc.  A few have even asked (and I presume innocently so) "You mean, narcolepsy is real?".  I figured I might as well write something about it.

Knocking out the latter (and perhaps most obvious) question first-  Yes, narcolepsy is real.  And despite the humor found in a character from Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, the "real life" version of narcolepsy is no joke.

Property Manager Safety Tips

With the death of Arkansas Realtor Beverly Carter still fresh in the minds of many, Realtor safety remains a timely issue.  While property managers and sales-type Realtors have a number of things in common, perhaps the biggest difference between us lies in the sheer volume of prospects we may encounter on any given day.  The more we encounter, the greater the chance of danger- and in light of my having had 20-showing days in the past, I’d like to offer a few tips that might serve to keep you and … (4 comments)

This one's a bit interesting- as a guy who shouldn't have been drinking and driving hit and killed a guy who shouldn't have been standing in the middle of the road.
It's also interesting- in that when pedestrians are killed around here, the pedestrian is intoxicated twice as often as the driver involved.

The following tragedy from Halloween is hardly surprising.  As in the photos above that I took one day while watching a couple push their child in a stroller into the path of more than one vehicle, children learn at a terribly young age that walking into traffic is both a way of life- and death.

It's my hope that the neighbor mentioned in this story is prosecuted for his contribution to the death of this child.

The following is an unfortunate incident that happened Halloween night.  The video above is footage I took myself- as this death wasn't too far from my place and I passed by it on the way home.

Out of respect for the dead here, I'll eschew a question I'd typically ask when reading this story- in wondering why a 14-year-old was trick-or-treating in the first place.  Instead, I'll point out the attitude of the boy- which he undoubtedly learned … (0 comments)
