In honor of lives lost and those who remain

In honor of lives lost and those who remain

73 years ago today, the relative serenity and calm of a Honolulu morning was interrupted by the sound of incoming enemy aircraft from the Empire of Japan. Soon to be followed by the sounds of one shipmate after another yelling "Incoming!" and warning each other of both the Japanese planes and their ordnances, it was undoubtedly one horrific day.

U.S. Navy folks surveyed the damage once the attack was over and the cowards who'd sucker punched us had departed, and … (1 comments)

heroes: Veterans Day 2014 - 11/10/14 11:51 AM
Veterans Day 2014

Veterans Day 2014

This day- and indeed, every day, I pause to remember my fellow veterans.

I remember those who have gone before me- ones who defeated Marxism, Communism and Fascism.  I remember those buried under Arlington's white headstones- most identified, some not.

I remember those who served in Korea and Viet Nam- both the ones who returned home to nothing resembling a heroes' welcome, and those who have never returned at all.  We remain vigilant and anticipate their return.

I remember a great number of friends I had the … (5 comments)

9/11:  Have you forgotten?  How will you mark the day?

“You have B52′s, your apaches and your Abrams [tank], but we have men who are dedicated, sincere, with hearts of lions”.

“We will kill you wherever we find you.”

Today marks the 4,748th day since tragedy was visited upon America's shores by way of Al-Qaeda's operatives- and I pause today to reflect on the 2,977 innocent lives lost in New York City, Washington, D.C. and a non-descript field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  Whether aboard American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight … (0 comments)

If you can read this in English, thank a Veteran...

For my last post in Bob Crane's Summer Video/"Show Us Your Local" Challenge, I don't believe I could've come up with a better place to visit than a place I've driven by countless times over the course of the past 7 years- the Central Florida Veterans Memorial Park.

Indeed, I've spent more time at the Orlando VA Medical Center across the street than I've ever wish upon anyone- yet today marked the first time I've ever actually visited this park.  With memorials/monuments to a good number of … (4 comments)

70th Anniversary of D-Day- 6/6/44

Long before Nike said "Just do it", America's heroes just did it.

Pausing on this 70th anniversay of the D-Day invasion to honor all those who served and never made it home- as well as those who served and made it home, yet returned home forever changed by it.

A special pause and salute to my grandfather, Lt. William G. McEachern, 36th Infantry Division, 143rd Infantry Regiment of the Texas National Guard.  Purple Hearts for injuries during both the Battle of San Pietro Infine in late 1943 … (1 comments)

Memorial Day 2014
As they say of us veterans, "all gave some".  Today, we pause to celebrate some who gave all.

Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe,
watch over all policemen and other law enforcement officers.
Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty
to stop crime, robberies, riots and violence.
Help them keep our streets and homes safe day and night, we pray.
We recommend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous.
Grant them your unending strength and courage in their daily assignments.
Dear God, protect … (0 comments)

Semper Fortis, Semper Fidelis and Semper Vigilio...America Remembers

Semper Fortis, Semper Fidelis and Semper Vigilio...America Remembers

On this day and every day, may we always remember December 7th, 1941 and the 2,402 Americans who lost their lives in service to our country.  Shipmates, soldiers and airmen alike- heroes one and all.

May we accept it as our charge to remember the devastating attack visited upon us by the Empire of Japan, and undertake the pledge to remain always brave, always faithful and always vigilant in order that the likes of it never happens again.

May God continue … (6 comments)

heroes: Memorial Day 2011: The world remembers- let's ensure we do, too. - 05/29/11 08:42 PM

Memorial Day 2011 affords us the opportunity to pause, appreciate and educate. Today, most Americans will take but a brief pause from their picnics (if any at all) to give thanks to those that have paid the ultimate price not only in defense of our lives- but in defense of our very way of life. We should all appreciate what many have lost so that many, many others may enjoy liberty and success.
Lastly, we must educate others in both what today's holiday is- and what it isn't.
Memorial Day is...for those that have lost their lives in battle- period.

heroes: Space Shuttle Endeavour Blasts Off for the Last Time on Friday 4/29/2011 - 04/26/11 03:52 PM
Thank you to John for the original posting. I'll pray for a few things on Friday. Like many others, I'll pray for Endeavour's safe return and wish them Godspeed as her crew heads towards the heavens one last time. I'll also pray that Congresswoman Giffords and Commander Kelly get some attention her story truly deserves-but that we all remember Endeavour has 5 other heroes aboard. Lastly, I'll pray that our marking of this great and uniquely American event is not a footnote to something happening in Great Britain earlier in the day. Space Shuttle Endeavour Launches for the Last Time on … (0 comments)

heroes: Wednesday thanks- more than A Few Good Men - 04/13/11 03:46 PM
"A Few Good Men" is a really good movie- but it's just that, a movie. Tom Cruise is one great actor, Kevin Bacon's proven to be more than the one-movie wonder many thought after "Footloose", and Jack Nicholson is surely one of the greatest actors of our time and made "You can't handle the truth!" a great companion to "Heeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!" in silver screen history.
More than a few good men rest below- taken last July on a quick trip back to D.C. for a friend's Navy retirement. Arlington National Cemetery is a special place- one I use no cliche in calling … (4 comments)
