Sometimes, "Fair" Landlordin' Doesn't Seem Fair

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/12/13/sc-landlord-says-visiting-solder-cant-stay-in-wife-apartment/

Sometimes fair doesn't seem fair- but that doesn't make it any less so.  The news report here speaks a veteran whose returned home on leave and wishes to stay with his wife.  That's understandable, but a bit of a technicality exists in that he is not a party to her lease.  He'd be a visitor in the eyes of the landlord- and would fall under their policy that visitors can only stay 7 days.

Guess what?  This landlord's policy is more liberal than any … (8 comments)

Thanksgiving 2014

Thanksgiving 2014

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name"- Psalm 100:4 (KJV)

On this Thanksgiving Day and every day, let us give thanks unto the Lord- for He will provide.

We're all different- occupying many different positions in life.  Some of us have soared to heights once beyond our wildest imaginations- while others among us may have fallen to depths which also seemed beyond our wildest and more tragic imaginations.  Today, one and all should give thanks equally- for God knows … (6 comments)

9/11:  Have you forgotten?  How will you mark the day?
9/11:  Have you forgotten?  How will you mark the day?

“You have B52′s, your apaches and your Abrams [tank], but we have men who are dedicated, sincere, with hearts of lions”.

“We will kill you wherever we find you.”

Today marks the 4,748th day since tragedy was visited upon America's shores by way of Al-Qaeda's operatives- and I pause today to reflect on the 2,977 innocent lives lost in New York City, Washington, D.C. and a non-descript field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  Whether aboard American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight … (0 comments)

Semper Fortis, Semper Fidelis and Semper Vigilio...America Remembers

Semper Fortis, Semper Fidelis and Semper Vigilio...America Remembers

On this day and every day, may we always remember December 7th, 1941 and the 2,402 Americans who lost their lives in service to our country.  Shipmates, soldiers and airmen alike- heroes one and all.

May we accept it as our charge to remember the devastating attack visited upon us by the Empire of Japan, and undertake the pledge to remain always brave, always faithful and always vigilant in order that the likes of it never happens again.

May God continue … (6 comments)

VA Dental Care...yes, you read it correctly!

VA Dental Care...yes, you read it correctly!

I've used the Orlando VA Medical Center for a number of years now.  Like others, I've had my ups and downs- with both the medical center here and with the overall VA health care system.  Having a few illnesses that have rendered me all but uninsurable (ask an insurance agent about narcolepsy coverage for a good laugh), I have always been thankful for the services I've gotten from the VA.

I've been thankful for a few reasons- primary among them being that the VA … (2 comments)

Where will I eat on Veterans' Day?

I am proud to be a veteran.  As a matter of fact, I'm really dang proud to be a veteran- and paraphrasing JFK, not for what I was able to do for the Navy, but what the Navy was able to do for me.  At an early age, I was able to learn leadership principles I've carried with me all of my adult life- and I was blessed by the Almighty God to serve alongside the finest group of folks I've ever … (4 comments)

military: Veterans Day 2012- American Hero or American Zero? - 11/11/12 03:44 PM
Veterans Day 2012- American Hero or American Zero? Veterans Day 2012- American Hero or American Zero? There's a lot of fruit salad on that uniform.  "Fruit salad" is military jargon for the ribbons adorning one's chest- the more fruit salad on the chest, the more heroic or accomplished the soldier. Retired General David Petraeus- who resigned his post as our nation's top intelligence officer in disgrace last week- sported a uniform during recent congressional testimony that told the world of his valor and provided visual evidence of an inspiring career. But is Petraeus an American Hero...or American Zero? Either as America's … (18 comments)

Localism Challenge, Day #14:  Helping heroes' families cope

Stress is a tough thing.  It's gnaws at you and gnaws at you- and if you don't address it properly, stress kills.
Though I may show a hint of partiality towards one of our armed services...I also have family members that have served in the Air Force, Army and Marine Corps.  Stress is a common thread that runs between members of all services- and a thread that reaches every member of their families as well.
From time to time, the Orlando … (0 comments)

military: Freedom's just another word - 07/04/11 04:57 AM
I don't remember the exact year that it happened, but a number of years ago I came to believe that Janis Joplin was the greatest female singer of all tme.
"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"
Joplin sang those words written for her by the great poet and songsmith Kris Kristofferson.  It was that song, the rousing "Piece of My Heart" from Woodstock's stage and "Mercedes Benz" sang a cappella from a recording studio that did it for me.
Some 20 years later, Joplin remains the greatest there's ever been.  Rough around the edges?  Check.  Alcoholic?  Check. … (4 comments)

military: Farewell, Secretary Gates - 06/21/11 07:57 PM
Farewell, Secretary Gates
With the confirmation of Leon Panetta as our next Secretary of Defense, the time's come for the president, our military and our nation to offer a hearty Farewell, Secretary Gates.  Dr. Robert Gates has a few days in June remaining, but has come to the end of his tenure at the helm of our nation's military.  Many assume Cabinet-level positions- but not all assuming those positions are equal.  Some become embroiled in scandals of their own making and are forced to resign in disgrace, some exhibit marked incompetence- yet somehow manage to retain their positions. Others have managed to … (4 comments)

military: 5,000 ships...11,000 planes...150,000 heroes...and the end of 1 dream. - 06/05/11 07:13 PM
Today, we pause to remember D-Day, June 6th, 1944- the day that more than 5,000 ships, 11,000 planes and 150,000 liberator/heroes joined together to end one dream. Adolf Hitler had a plan to rule Europe, then the world- but America and her allies became his worst nightmare.
While pausing today, would you kindly consider taking up what I'll call my "11/11/11 Challenge"? It's pretty simple, actually. Playing off the 1's of our upcoming Veteran's Day (11/11/11), can you- will you commit to thanking just one veteran for their service before Veteran's Day arrives? And if you have children, can you commit to introducing … (14 comments)

military: Wednesday thanks- more than A Few Good Men - 04/13/11 03:46 PM
"A Few Good Men" is a really good movie- but it's just that, a movie. Tom Cruise is one great actor, Kevin Bacon's proven to be more than the one-movie wonder many thought after "Footloose", and Jack Nicholson is surely one of the greatest actors of our time and made "You can't handle the truth!" a great companion to "Heeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!" in silver screen history.
More than a few good men rest below- taken last July on a quick trip back to D.C. for a friend's Navy retirement. Arlington National Cemetery is a special place- one I use no cliche in calling … (4 comments)

military: Pray for Japan...and our police officers and firefighters - 03/15/11 11:56 AM
"Let's pray for the people of Japan" seems like the thing to say these days.  Everyone (even those that have gone far too long without visiting one of God's houses) hates to see the newscasts and word coming from Japan.  With every passing hour, things seem to get worse- and the Japanese folks need our prayers.  We need to pray that those hurting (both physically and mentally) will be healed.  We need to pray that those lost will be found, and those found will be found alive.  And we need to pray for their financial markets, as they're surely an … (4 comments)
