Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #40

OK.  Even the most casual of visitors to my blog here will surely know that my accompanying story won't involve the guy in the photo above.  You see, unlike this guy (who's in the crosswalk for some strange reason), folks around here typically don't frequent or patronize those "crosswalk things".
Unfortunately, being too cool for crosswalks has tragic consequences- and today's story (courtesy, Orlando Sentinel) marks the 40th instance of a pedestrian whose death was due to their not observing our … (2 comments)

Wacky Wordless (or almost) Wednesday

Wacky Wordless (or almost) Wednesday
You never know what you're going to find when you visit a home for the first time.  We placed a property on the market a few short days ago, and I had 7 showings set for yesterday- busy, busy, busy. I didn't sign up the listing, so my trip to the home for the showing was my first time there.
I arrived a few minutes before my first appointment and made my usual trip around the place to familiarize myself with things, look for issues that might cause a … (2 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #39 Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #39 Quick- do you see the lady in this photo? If it's tough finding her in this photo while sitting at your computer or checking it out on a phone in your hand, imagine how tough it is dodging these folks as they dart in and out of our traffic every day. While she appeared to have made it safely to the other side of the road tonight, there's never a guarantee things will work out when one decides to veer off the sidewalk/crosswalk … (0 comments)

Absolutely Florida:  Gator Jerky

Absolutely Florida:  Gator Jerky

Fancy advertising.  Great packaging.  Great taste.  Pleasant shopping experiences in air conditioned supermarkets or delis.  Ummmm... no.

A recent Orlando Sentinel story reminded me of something I'll throw in the Absolutely Florida bin:  gator jerky.

I've always been up for trying things at least once.  I typically eat a Five Guys hamburger combo every Saturday (which is a fairly boring thing, I guess) and I eat a good bit of chicken throughout the week.  But I have been to the annual Jaycees' Rattlesnake Rodeo back in Opp, Alabama- and … (9 comments)

orlando: How late is late? - 11/19/12 04:19 PM
How late is late?

How late is late?
I guess the question could be phrased a few different ways.  "How late is your late?"  or something of the sort might apply- as your late might not be my late...and my late might be fine and dandy for you.  Who knows...
I've had somewhat of a 15-minute rule for a while now.  If I set an appointment for 2:00 pm, you're late at 2:15, and if you arrive any later than that you can pretty much figure that I'm already heading down the road to my next appointment in hopes that … (10 comments)

The malls listed below are ina number of different areas around here, but have one thing in common:  Dennis Burgess won't be found anywhere near 'em on Black Friday!

Making The Great Commission my mission…trip

Sometimes giving is easy, sometimes it’s hard.  Everyone has to make their own choices as to what causes, individuals or organizations to share some of their time with- and folks’ choices and their reasons behind them are surely as unique as the individuals themselves.

One of my problems in living a giving life is that I’m always looking to do more- to contribute  more, to help more people.  I feel it’s the Christian thing to do- and I’m often frustrated when I run out of time … (4 comments)

Orlando Real Estate Market: October, 2012

Orlando Real Estate Market: October, 2012
New numbers are out- and there really aren't any surprises around here:

http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.orlrealtor.com/resource/resmgr/Images_Market_Pulse/MarketPulse112012_.pdf

Overall, a couple of points do stick out to me, though:
Orlando home sales (all home types combined) in October 2012 were up 14.17 percent when compared to October of 2011 and up 6.01 percent when compared to September 2012.
Single-family home sales in the Orlando area increased by 20.13 percent in October when compared to October of last year.
Of the 2,434 sales in October, 1,148 normal sales accounted for 47.17 … (2 comments)

A few ways to keep vacancies away…

A few ways to keep vacancies away…

I stumbled across a pretty good Trulia article today- 4 tips to Keep the Vacancies Away.  It can be found here:  http://pro.truliablog.com/rentals/4-tips-to-keep-the-vacancies-away/

The four things they list as being helpful in reducing vacancy time (paraphrased here) are:

1)  Featuring more than 3 photos in ads
2)  Including videos in ads
3)  Renting listings before they’re vacant
4)  Promoting listings to a number of websites

I’d say that I agree with their suggestions for the most part, save the part where they discuss … (2 comments)

Veterans Day has held a special place in my heart- long before I ever became a veteran myself. Call it old-fashioned, "old school" or whatever you choose to call it, but I've always had a profound respect for member of our military (and folks I've proudly called my fellow veterans for the past 17 years now). I pray that will forever remain so.

NAR Convention 2012: Realtorin' ain't easy...or cheap

It'll be a busy weekend around here- with our national Realtor convention (or the 2012 Realtors Conference and Expo, to be technically correct) coming to The City Beautiful and all.
It's a jam-packed few days, to be sure- and the schedule you'll find on the conference/expo's website is an exhaustive description of all the weekend's happenings:

One thing that I don't see happening? Attending the big event myself. It's not for lack of interest, mind you- there are a ton of classes I'd like … (4 comments)

Election 2012 Results, Analysis and Commentary

Well, we've come to the end of another long election cycle and America has spoken the folks across our great land that managed to somehow squeeze a bit of free time out of their busy schedules and vote for (or against) those seeking to chart America's path over the next few years have spoken.

As the son, grandson and nephew of those who have served in our Army and Air Force during wartime and one who proudly served our nation as a Navy cryptologist myself, I … (6 comments)

One more time in Florida...Go, Mitt, go!
Don't have to guess where I am this morning!  We've got one last chance to see Mitt Romney before Election Day- and one last chance to rally the troops and get out the vote for him.  Our incumbent president hasn't shown that he's capable of doing much well- but even his staunchest critics will acknowledge he's one heck of a campaigner and will fight until the final poll closes.  We have to fight harder.
If our current president had dedicated 1/2 the effort he spent on … (8 comments)

Time to fall back...already?Time to fall back...already? No offense intended, of course- but can anyone tell me where our summer went?  Or where at least where 2012 went? It seems like the same ol' thing every year: with each passing month, we ask each other "Can you believe it's March....April.....October already?"- like the passage of time is this new concept the clock and calendar folks have sprung on us and all. Guess it's a good conversation starter when there's nothing else to discuss, though- goes hand-in-hand with "Nice weather we're having, huh?" and the obligatory "How are you doing?" that we … (2 comments)

Do you "affirmatively further" Fair Housing? Do you "affirmatively further" Fair Housing? If you're the least bit like me, your first reaction might be "What the heck does affirmatively further mean?". Well, it means a lot- and I don't quite know whether that's a lot of good. My seemingly never-ending search for SEO gold led me to a site called Quora early this week- and one of the questions currently being posed to folks by Nikole Hannah-Jones of ProPublica is a similar one: "What should communities be doing to "affirmatively further" fair housing?" This question prompted me to read Hannah-Jones' story … (4 comments)

Operation Christmas Child 2012 underway!
I’m so glad that my church- Aloma (Baptist) Church, Winter Park, FL- has once again partnered with Rev. Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse organization for another year.
Last year, our church had a lofty goal:  filling, collecting and sending 1,000 shoeboxes.  When all was said and done, our church had collected over 1,300 shoeboxes- and they were on their way to other parts of the world where they were surely going to make a difference in some children’s lives.  Some children (such as the one from Haiti in the photo above) … (5 comments)
