Folks around here will even run out in front of a cop car.  It seems like this young man will live to tell of his story- and I hope he tells others not to dart out into traffic!

It's a bit surprising that it's been so long since my last "Pedestrian Tales..." post (back in May or so)- but I can assure folks the reason behind that lies in my being busy doing other things rather than any lack of pedestrians illegally crossing the road.

There's been an increase in these jaywalking incidents over the last week or so- awesome in a bad way and devastating to far too many families.  I'll document these in this … (0 comments)

One thing we don't seem to be teaching our students is how to cross the street.  Elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and (apparently) colleges have all missed out on this opportunity to educate folks at a young age that it's best to cross in a crosswalk at an intersection.  It might not always be the coolest thing to do, but following just a few simple rules might just keep you alive.

I think I'd have to say that the one thing that continues to amaze me about the way pedestrians walk out into traffic here is the fact that more often than not, they are within 100 feet of a crosswalk.  Call it ignorance (I won't), arrogance (I might) or stupidity (I do), the end result is the same- another dead pedestrian and another family with a member that won't return home.
This is yet another death falling under the … (0 comments)

Funny thing about these "accidents" (or "crashes", as they often call them):  I've never seen one where the story has told of a mangled vehicle and a pedestrian who walked away.  Hmmm...

There's been another uptick in pedestrian deaths in our area recently- no doubt owing in part to the Orlando Police Department and others' refusal to enforce our pedestrian traffic laws.
Simply put, a median strip is not a sidewalk- and when missed opportunities for enforcement (and possibly for saving lives) like the one pictured above abound, there's plenty of blame to spread around when the next pedestrian dies.
To be sure, I am a "personal responsibility" guy- and I believe the … (0 comments)

I hate using absolutes, but it's quite possible that this is the worst "tale" of the 58 I've written about thus far.  Pedestrians being hit by cars around here?  Seems to be a daily occurrence, with fatalities increasing.  Pedestrians hit by more than one vehicle?  Fairly rare, but it happens from time to time.
But a guy getting hit by FIVE vehicles?  This is one that might just keep you up at night...

Jaywalking...an Orlando family tradition that took a tragic turn this Christmas.  There are some things we shouldn't pass along to our kids- and the habit of jaywalking should be pretty high on the "not to" list....
Another tragedy- yet a very preventable one if folks would only use sidewalks for walking and let cars use the streets.

Helpful Hint:  Let a Community Garage Sale help your business

I had a few showings this morning- including a couple in a Deltona, FL community called Saxon Ridge.  It's a beautiful day- so the traffic in the area being a bit heavier than usual didn't really seem out of the ordinary or anything.
When I turned into the community and drove down the street a bit, I noticed the real reason for the increased traffic:  a community garage sale.
Signs like this one from the mailbox kiosk were throughout the neighborhood, … (4 comments)

Well, it's been a while since I posted one of these.  I'm sure I've missed a few in the time that's passed since my last posting (and I'm going to do my best to catch up), but what follows is much of what remains far too typical here:  pedestrian disobeys traffic laws and walks into the  street, vehicle comes along and tries to avoid pedestrian, they can't do it, pedestrian dies.
Hard to misunderstand or misconstrue what happened here- as the caption from the story's video says it all:  "Man walking in … (2 comments)

Now, the question here isn't "Why did the lady push her kid out in the middle of traffic- when a crosswalk wasn't far away?" No, the answer to that one is easy: "Because she could, and she had no regard for the law."
No, the question here is "Did this ignorant lady and her poor kid make it to the other side?"
As far as I know, she made it. But stay tuned- and see if she makes my popular Pedestrian Tales Fom the Middle of the Road...

Today's news brings the 30th death of this sort to light since I started documenting these, and it's another sad one indeed. An older gentleman dies- but a young lady only 20 years old must deal with having run him over as he walked in front of her for the rest of her life.
This comes under the not-so-watchful eyes of Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. Demings is up for re-election this year and is expected to cruise to victory in a landslide. I … (0 comments)

Wow.  This isn't the first of these apparent "suicide by automobile" incidents, and I'm sure it won't be the last.  My brother-in-law actually witnessed one of these a few years ago:  a lady stood on the shoulder smoking a cigarette, and she stepped in the path of a tractor-trailor when there was no chance of it slowing down.  When he stopped to try and render aid, the cigarette was still smoking.
It's surely a tragedy- and one where I have to say that the victims are the driver of the tractor-trailor … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #27

Here's another installment from my popular series documenting some of our Orlando area's most preventable of tragedies.  This one falls under the jurisdiction of Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.  As frequent visitors know, I believe pedestrians should be on sidewalks and in crosswalks.  I know- funny concept.  That said, I've come to have less and less sympathy for those walking into traffic- and more and more for those motorists who try to avoid the "froggers" to no avail.  Indeed, it is them that I've come to consider the true victims … (0 comments)

Volusia County man killed in pedestrian crash
Well, here we have yet another death occurring under the less-than-watchful eyes of Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson and Deland Police Chief Bill Ridgeway. As with all of these 26 cases thus far, it wouldn't have happened if the pedestrian had remained on the sidewalk or crossed the street when and where legally entitled to do so.
